Hi everyone,
Lana Adlawan, awesome Teen Zone librarian at Oakland Public Library, is
setting up programming for Teen Tech Week at the library. She's getting in
touch with folks in Oakland's maker community to help with demos,
workshops, etc. If you're interested in doing a demo or a workshop, please
see her email below and contact her directly at ladlawan(a)oaklandlibrary.org.
Please also feel free to fwd to others who you think might be interested in
facilitating or doing a demo.
Best,

Subject: Teen Tech Week in March
To: marina.kukso(a)gmail.com
Hey Marina,
Happy New Year!
We’re planning ahead for March and trying to invite local makers in to a
few of our branches to showcase some of the great technology that’s out
there. Our teens would love, absolutely LOVE to have a 3-D printer demo,
engage in a soldering workshop, create cute plushy LED creatures, etc. Is
there a possibility of collaborating with you in this endeavor? Teen Tech
Week is March 9-15, but our programming deadline is the end of this month,
which is why we plan so far ahead.
Let me know what you think – I’m also planning on stopping by the Sudo
Room’s event on Friday, so hopefully I’ll see you there.
Thanks!
Lana

Dear Friends :
First off -- happy New Year !
Just a reminder that the next meeting on THE OMNI is
this coming Thursday, January 9, 7PM @ 2141 Broadway !
Please join us -- we're attempting to assemble the collective-of-collectives & to figure out how to balance money & collectivity, so we need everybody's input !
Hope to see y'all on Thursday --
Love & solidarity -- David Brazil (from the Public School)
Hey all,
George has offered to replace the hydraulic system in the elevator, which
is a $1500 job according to him. He wants to ask sudo room for $250 and the
public school $100 to cover part of the cost.
I'm unsure how this fits with regard to our lease, but either way we should
figure out how to respond at the next meeting.

all - know anyone involved with organizing at 924 Gilman? In the interests
of BAPS/Sudo co-locating to a new space, I'd like to find out how their
private 'club' system works with regards putting on events and dealing with
the city..
best,
David
Announcing change to sudo since it was placed on the sudo calendar.

Hey all!
Double Union is co-hosting the One Web For All Kickoff
Hackathon<http://onewebforall.us/>
!
It's on Feb 1&2 at New Relic in SOMA in SF, and participation is free
(though there are optional donation tickets that support DU, if you're so
inclined).
One Web For All is a new grassroots, non-profit organization helping
businesses and individuals learn more about creating welcoming, inclusive
cultures, led by Cori Johnson <https://twitter.com/iroc>, Faruk
Ateş<https://twitter.com/KuraFire>,
and Ashe Dryden <https://twitter.com/ashedryden>. The OWFA Kick-off
Hackathon is a free, non-competitive, open-to-everyone event where writers,
artists, designers, programmers, managers, editors, speakers, and many
others, all come together to help brainstorm, write, design and build out
the One Web For All community resources.
"We’re aiming to put together a series of resources that address and
counter many systemic issues people are facing every day, such as exclusive
work cultures, hostile online communities, and more. These resources will
support anyone willing to work towards a better, more inclusive world."
There's a ton more information about the hackathon and projects at

George is planning to clean the carpets in the common area tomorrow and
seems to think we are prepared for this somehow...he told me about it
Saturday afternoon, and I said "Great, but email someone else from sudo and
let them know so I'm not the only one who knows."
Well, guess what? He didn't do that, and while I'm pretty sure we can
navigate this situation it's just another example of Georgeness. (my new
catch all phrase for what he seems to engage in on a regular basis).

Hi everyone,
Today (and every Sat.) from 2-5PM at Sudo Room <http://sudoroom.org> we'll
be doing "Today We Learned <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_We_Learned>,"
weekly, open, co-learning.
What do we do at "Today We Learned"? We bring the things that we're
learning, learn together, and share what we're working on (we set up a
projector for anyone to share any projects that they'd like to share).

Former Walmart Exec Leads Shadowy Smear Campaign Against Black Friday

As activists continue to organize demonstrations at McDonalds, Walmart and
other low-wage firms, big
protests<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/21/walmart-protests-2013_n_4319420.ht…>are
planned against retailers for mistreating their workers this Black
Friday. In response, union-busting consultants are ramping up efforts to
marginalize them.
Last night—Worker Center Watch, a new website dedicated to attacking
labor-affiliated activist groups like OUR Walmart, Restaurant Opportunities
Center, and Fast Food Forward—began
sponsoring<https://twitter.com/WC_Watch>advertisements on Twitter to
promote smears against the protests planned
for Black Friday. In one video sponsored by the group, activists demanding
a living wage and better working conditions for workers are portrayed as
lazy “professional protesters” who “haven’t bothered to get jobs
themselves.”
“This Black Friday, just buy your gifts, not their lies,” instructs the
Worker Center Watch narrator. Watch it:
Worker Center Watch has no information its website about its sponsors. Yet
the group attacks labor activists and community labor groups for lacking
transparency. “Hiding behind these non-profits, unions mask their true
motivations, circumvent operational requirements and skirt reporting and
disclosure obligations,” says
<http://www.workercenterwatch.com/about/>Worker Center Watch,
referring to labor-supported worker centers like OUR
Walmart.
TheNation.com has discovered that Worker Center Watch was
registered<http://whois.polodomains.com/domain/O88QLBx68p8YKICdThulRHN1yWAQng29_info.h…>by
the former head lobbyist for Walmart. Parquet Public Affairs, a
Florida-based government relations and crisis management firm for retailers
and fast food companies, registered the Worker Center Watch website.
The firm is led by Joseph
Kefauver<http://www.parquetpa.com/index.php/who-we-are/>,
formerly the president of public affairs for Walmart and government
relations director for Darden Restaurants. Throughout the year, Parquet
executives have
toured<http://www.cueinc.com/pdf/conferences/2013_fall_conference_flyer.pdf>the
country, giving
lectures<http://www.steptoe.com/assets/htmldocuments/2012%20LABOR%20CONFERENCE%20BRO…>to
business groups on how to combat the rise of what has been called
“alt-labor.” At a
presentation<http://www.scribd.com/doc/187341531/New-Labor-Management-Challenges-Kefauver>in
October for the National Retail Federation, a trade group for
companies
like Nordstrom and Nike, Kefauver’s presentation listed protections against
wage theft, a good minimum wage and mandated paid time off as the type of
legislative demands influenced by the worker center protesters.
The presentation offered
questions<http://www.scribd.com/doc/187341531/New-Labor-Management-Challenges-Kefauver>for
the group, including: “How Aggressive Can We Be?” and “How do We
Challenge the Social Justice Narrative?”
It seems retailers are now experimenting with how aggressive they can be.
Today, Parquet’s Worker Center Watch
posted<https://twitter.com/WC_Watch/status/405307792073842689>a link
to a Breitbart News story featuring a video allegedly obtained by
someone who infiltrated an Occupy activist group planning to demonstrate
against Walmart.
The alarm at how quickly the new organizing model has taken off has sparked
anxiety among business executives. Littler Mendelson, a law firm that helps
companies defeat labor unions, released a
report<http://www.littler.com/category/wordpress-category/union-front-organizations>outlining
the challenge for corporate executives. The US Chamber of
Commerce, a dark-money group that counts Walmart and McDonalds as members,
produced<http://www.uschamber.com/press/releases/2013/november/us-chamber-report-sho…>a
similar study last week.
Corporations fear that the new wave of activism could have a multiplier
effect that goes way beyond better pay and benefits for their workers.

In a webinar hosted this month for business executives seeking a
“union-free workplace,” Nancy Jowske
explained<http://lrionline.com/webinar-black-friday-update>that the
alt-labor model could heavily influence millennials and their
perceptions of labor unions. “One of the things to consider about what’s
going there with SEIU’s Fight for 15 and all of this is the millennial
generation,” said Jowske, a former SEIU organizer turned union-buster,
“they are getting a steady diet of pro-union from every possible
direction." She added, "this is also a generation that is very
class-conscious” and explained that the current alt-labor protests could
incite future organizing drives. Jowske also cited a
recent<http://inthesetimes.com/article/15826/fight_for_15_confidential/>
*In
These Times* piece to argue that worker centers can be portrayed as “union
front groups,” and warned that the alt-labor organizing model could have a
long-term impact. For instance, the organizing model appears to help unions
and community groups forge close ties that could be later used to deploy
activists for political campaigns, workplace NLRB elections and other
left-wing causes.

The term is "Egoboo" in context of a healthy accolade for That Which Was
WELL performed. Needful works that go a step beyond plodding bare minimums.

Initial thoughts of mine- there might be "Before&After" pics where the

keyboard hours?
Both approaches neatly banish the Goldbrick scenes and can be posted as

On December 18th, Hol submitted a proposal to lift the minimum dues
requirement for members to $10 (from $0), with exception granted on a
case-by-case basis for special cases (eg; refusal to participate in
the monetary system).
Posted at
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association/Minimum_Dues#Sub-Section_…
- - Go there to comment, edit, etc!:
- -----------------------
Sub-Section 3.4.3 Dues
Dues shall be paid by members on a sliding scale basis, from the
minimum $10 per month rate to the recommended donation calculated
using the process below. Exemptions of individuals from paying dues
may be approved on a case by case basis by the general membership on
the grounds of financial hardship or refusal to participate in the
monetary system
The recommended monthly dues for members is calculated as follows:
dues = average over all members of ( 1 month's overhead + a % of
any defecit in each standing fund + a risk premium (min. 5% of all
other dues components)
For instance, early on, overhead could be (rent + utilities +
services), in which case dues = (500 + 100 + 20 + (10 + 5 + 0 + 10) +
64) / 23 = $30.83 per member
- ---------------------
Feedback encouraged over the next 7 days until this amendment is
brought up for consensus at the next weekly meeting (January 8th).

We have a few dozen of these hanging around the space...look for a small
white box that says "SUDO ROOM BUTTONS" (it's currently on the big table)
and help yourself. Then donate whatever you think they're worth to

Starting next week I'm going to be hacking with the 3D printer every
Tuesday night at Sudoroom. Next week (New Year's Eve) will probably
end early, but after that I will shoot for being around from 5-9pm. I
encourage others to join me. It will be a time to learn, create, solve
problems, and have fun.
Some of my specific short term goals are:
- fix/improve our Type A Machine's bed
- experiment with the best slicer settings
- set up the attached box for OpenSCAD development
Some long term goals are:
- make our printer easier & simpler to use, understand, maintain
- get more people involved in 3D printing
- build at least one RepRap
Also there is ongoing hacking of our wiki documentation. Please help!:

Also at this momentous Dec. 18th meeting, several suggestions were put
forward re: defining membership. These proposals and the resulting
feedback have been documented here:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association/Membership
^^^ Please edit this page or use the Discussion tab to give feedback
on these proposals - or respond to this thread! Items up for consensus
next week are [1], [2], [4] and [5]
Proposed:
[1] That membership requires a minimum fee of $10 per month (see
previous email for the exact amendment wording, link and discussion
thread)
[2] That membership includes 24/7 access to the space with a personal
access code and/or rfid.
[3] That members don't ever have to show up in person if they don't
want voting rights.
[4] To empower members to deal with problematic non-members,
non-members can be thrown out at any time by a member if that members
feel they are being a problem, _unless_ some other member present in
the space is willing to vouch for the member as a guest. Non-members
being asked to leave must be told that they can further discuss the
incident at a Wednesday meeting or on the mailing list.
[5] Non-members can use the space as much as they want when other
members are present, but cannot access the space when no members are
there and have to leave when the last member leaves.
Up for consensus:
[1] - See previous email
(https://lists.sudoroom.org/pipermail/sudo-discuss/2014-January/005079.html)
[2] - Unanimous consent at 12/18 meeting.
[4] - Working group suggested to refine this proposal (if interested
in this working group, please indicate so via this thread or the wiki
page linked to above)
[5] - Mostly vibe-y (not enough members at this point to reach quorum)
Your feedback, critiques, suggestions etc much appreciated!

I've got a sewing machine I can bring if someone confirms its need ASAP.
I also have some collaborative pieces that could use some more paint
for the Jan 3rd event. I have all the supplies needed and will hover
around the table facilitating others (as minimally as needed) so that
they paint with (rather than over) previous contributions. It's fun
and easy.
How are the current sewing machines set up at SudoRoom?
I'd like to set up a sewing station for people during the artmaking party
on January 3.

During the Art Murmur any people could be stationed on the street waving,
playing music, performing or dancing and beckoning people coming to
SudoRoom.

points of the night to showcase their progress.
- Elle Seven will skate around, present her wonderful skate films set in

January 3, 2014 - we are having a post Oakland Art
Murmur<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Art_Murmur> art
making evening.
The idea is that instead of doing an art show, we will create a space for
people to create art, hack on stuff, dance and perform for everyone live.
It's like a Jazz musician jam. There are going to be art MC's such as James
Lamaste and roller skaters like Elle Seven cheering people on, presenting
videos, and playing music.

I'd like to use government data to make an iPhone mobile app [[native]] for
my programming portfolio.
Has anyone worked with the socrata open data?
they manage the sf open data website... there's interesting stuff there,
like all the films that were filmed in SF, and their locations and actors,
etc.
It would be a fun geolocation app.
would anyone be interested in collaborating?

Help! any coders out there know how to get data from SudoRoom's calendar
out as a Rest API?

Please email me.
It seems like it's using a Wordpress plugin called

Hi Eddan and Matt-
Happy New Year!
Attached please find the 1/2014 Invoice for The Sudo Room. As per the terms
of the lease, there is a 3% rent increase effective this month (we decided
to wait until January instead of doing it in December). The new rent is
$1545 a month.
We hope to attend your event next Friday. If I don't see you before then,
hope to see you then!

But we have a functioning document projector that may suit your needs. It's in a black bag on the documentation cart.

do we have a overhead projector, old school style, with transparencies that we can write on with markers?I seem to recall that we had one.
I'd like to use this to do a live comic book / cartoon session during the Year of the Snake event January 3rd.

I'm going to go to SudoRoom on another day, not Saturday for a January 3
art making event
I'm planning on borrowing the overhead projector from Noisebridge, with
their permission.
Does anyone know anyone willing to be a performer?
Does anyone have any art supplies? Would it be possible for people to leave
art supplies in a donation box by the front of SudoRoom?
There is a big roll of paper somewhere downstairs in the building. I'm
wondering--is this needed? Would George let us use this?

30c3 from Hamburg Germany is being live streamed from multiple feeds to
Noisebridge. Would be great to see some sudo folks out and have some more
hands on hardware and software hacking thru the weekend.
The live talks are running until around 3p, then will be doin more hacking
with sifteo cubes, soldering and code.
Schedule:

Please spread the word to other hackers and spaces in the bay.

Hi,
Would you like to see a combination co-working space and spa in Oakland at
The Omni? Come to the first Hacker Spa Collective meeting tomorrow at
6:00pm in the common room. Here's some more info about the idea:
Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackerspacollective/
Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/382439568568178/
Riseup List: https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/hacker-spa-collective
Hacker Spa will be a combination spa and co-working space. We will provide
a quiet, warm, relaxing place to chill and work as well as offer massage
therapy, tea, and hot tubs.
I'm imagining the space to have no or just a few desks. People would mainly
work sitting on couches or comfy pillows and bean bags. Or maybe work in
the hot tub via rented water resistant laptops.
I've had this idea in my head for a little over a year. I've mentioned it
to a couple of people who love it, but the timing was never right to make
it actually happen. Well, as some of you know there is a space in the
Temescal Neighborhood of Oakland that is being looked at as becoming a
community center owned by a collective of collectives called The Omni,
http://prezi.com/fbhw5lnpkyo1/the-omni/
The top floor of this building has an area with 3 - 4 "bedrooms" and a
laundry room with a shower and a hot tub. I think that this area would be a
great place to make the Hacker Spa happen.
The organization would be co owned by everyone working there, so for
example if you wanted to set up a massage table you would pay dues to help
pay rent and expenses and keep any other money you make as well as get paid
dividends if we make a profit. Same with anyone who helps with promotion,
administration, etc. The major goal would be to pay a rent on a portion of
The Omni with this project.

Hi everyone,
Tomorrow (and every Sat.) from 2-5PM at Sudo Room <http://sudoroom.org> we'll
be doing "Today We Learned <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_We_Learned>,"
weekly, open, co-learning.
What do we do at "Today We Learned"? We bring the things that we're
learning, learn together, and share what we're working on (we set up a
projector for anyone to share any projects that they'd like to share).
This blog post<https://sudoroom.org/today-we-learned-what-do-we-do-at-weekly-open-co-learn…>I
wrote has some more examples of what we do.
See you tomorrow!

Regarding the ongoing exploration of potentially relocating to the
old Omni, does anyone know folk who work at or are otherwise close to
people at either the Parkway Theatre or the East Bay Depot for Creative
Reuse, who I could talk to for a few minutes regarding their
previous respective attempts to move into the Omni..?
Part of the fact-finding mission regarding what (other) obstacles may have
prevented them from moving into that space -
Any contacts or help in this regard would be much appreciated - feel free
to email me directly / offlist
Many thanks!
