Internet Society online course "Building Community Mesh Networks"

The Internet Society offers various online courses. The latest is "Building Community Mesh Networks" : http://inforum.internetsociety.org/LMS/Portal.aspx?tabindex=0 The course was developed by IEEE and ISOC. Many of the course participants are IEEE SIGHT, IEEE Smart Village and HAM radio folks. It is an open course but you must have a ISOC Membership login (free => internetsociety.org) [image: Inline image 1] There's an online registration form with instructions. The course is self directed but has a six week completion timeline. Space is limited - sorry for late notice but I got a late start on it myself. a fire extinguisher was discharged in the basement this evening around 6pm. the boys from down the street were in the ballroom with the women making banners & i told the boys to leave. the women making banners thought that i should have found a better solution that kicking them out. the front door was propped open & nobody was watching it.

As there is a small snafu on the membership form, I'm declaring my intent to join here: I'm Corey (he/him) && I want to be a member because I value and want to support a space that is open, inclusive, and gives people the tools to make cool things! && I'm wanting to get into synthesizer design and other DIY electronics, I have a decent background in EE but just picked up my first synth at the awesome swap meet a few weeks back. Would also like to get involved with projects that deal with transparency, collaboration, or education && I earn my living writing javascripts and css, happy to pass on those skills to those willing to learn. robot dead

this afternoon apparently someone used the robot in sudoroom and while they were using it, one of the motor driver circuits burned out. tonight the other Jake and I worked on it to try to figure out where the smoke was coming out, and we couldn't figure it out but we are going to order a replacement part for another motor driver circuit that has a known bad part, and hopefully that will fix that one and we can swap it in. in the meantime the robot cannot be moved from its present position, sorry. if anyone knows what happened I would appreciate knowing more than just "someone broke the robot and didn't want to tell anyone" thank you -jake

Hi, I am requesting your input on this idea since I have no experience working in a collective way. I want to build a Magnetron Sputtering Vacuum Deposition System to produce thin films, ultra thin films, and nanoparticles. I am interested in working at the interface of materials science and bioengineering. My particular interest is exploring nano-materials for enhanced raman spectra signaling - including bio-engineering for enhanced fluorescence-emf detection. However, other subjects also interest me, such as the toxic effects of micro and nano-materials and how these materials interact with organisms, cells and biological processes in general. Building a thin film deposition system is a challenge but can be extremely interesting. This kind of equipment is very costly and only some very lucky people have access to learning how they are built and how they operate. This is because the magnetron sputtering chambers are used in the private industry only by trained and skilled personnel. In universities and technical colleges, only experts and selected talented students get access to these machines while working on their thesis projects. In YouTube I have watched people building their own vacuum chambers, rather crude, o.k. for hobby but not likely to work for producing nano-materials with real-life applications (sorry for being so critical). I am contemplating working on building a system using your Collective model. However, I have never worked in an open group setting and I wonder if this would be a realistic expectation and if there would be any interest at all! Although I am not alone. There are five of us in my group, we are people with similar interests living and working in Berkeley with limited free time to work on our own projects, since we have day jobs at UCB. Only one of us has actually built such equipment before. The rest in our group only have used the equipment and/or has worked on experiments using nano-materials, mainly plants. front door brute forced open

the front door was open by operation of the smaller door being left ajar and the larger door being closed which caused the smaller door to stay open. upon inspection, i discovered that one of the bolts holding the vertical bar, that locks the smaller door closed, was missing & the vertical bar assembly was dangling loosly on it's other bolt. i rebolted the assembly back down but i think it may be time to install the lower bar on the smaller door, that goes into the floor to secure the door from the top & bottom. i've been told there's a place in emmeryville that sells commercial door parts. i'll try to find out where it is. ~r

During the workshop portion of the event, they are looking for people to give a brief overview of some basic security concepts, as well as exercises for them to complete. For example, the lesson could consist of a presentation followed by simple CTF problems. It should last about an hour altogether. The *total time commitment* would be probably be around *3 hours in total* on the morning of *Saturday, February 25 *(I haven't confirmed exactly whether it will be 10 to 11 AM or 11 AM to 12 PM, plus transit time to the *MuleSoft Headquarters *in *SF*). How do we help SudoRoom become more project-based?

Hey! I look back on my involvement in SudoRoom and Noisebridge and *I was most happy and having fun bouncing off ideas with people when working on projects.* This also contributed the most fun to SudoRoom and shows what is unique about the space. I got sucked into a bunch of interesting events, especially around teaching and helping lead Women Who Code meetups. That was very fun! I socialized with a lot of cool people and had good times. There were nice conversations. But these kinds of activities ultimately did not produce any tangible results that I could build upon. I am not interested in being an event planner or a teacher, although those are noble activities! *How can we help make SudoRoom a bit more project-based? *By putting new potential members on the path to creating projects, i think this would help with our retention. I keep mentioning again and again to new people that it's not so much fitting in with the people, having people hug you or going to events where everyone looks exactly like you that's important... meetups are all over the bay area. it's really the projects that suck people in and help them add diversity to the space. ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

pick & place machine at sudoroom?

I think it would be worth the space it takes up. we already have tons of surface-mount electronics and ways to make circuitboards at sudoroom. what do people think? -jake

Wi-Fi / Mesh at The Village (MLK & 36th, Marcus Garvey park aka Grove Shafter park)

Hello all, I just received a request from the people over at The Village, the encampment/occupation that was set up last week at the park on MLK & 36th. They wanted me to ask if people at the Sudoroom were able to help them get Wi-Fi set up over there. At one of last week's Assemblies Matt Senate suggested that Sudomesh was probably able to provide hardware for setting up an access point. The latest info I have (a few days old) is that Eli's across the street would be willing to share their connection, but I'm still verifying if that case. Would anyone interested to help be willing to either respond here, or preferably via Signal (my number is 510-771-7463). Thanks, I will report back once I know more details. Sierk

FEB 19th in Ballroom: Musicians and DIY Electronics Swap Meet

Hi Erik!!!!!! so nice to hear from you! I would love for you to have the event at Omni!! we have a booking system and here's a link. I just looked at the calendar for you (which is the first step) and it looks to me like February 19th is clear!!!!!!! That's assuming you want the main ballroom, which i think would be awesome. https://omnicommons.org/occupy don't worry about the second tuesday thing.. just say that Jake from Sudoroom wants to sponsor this event and that we want to reserve the ballroom for that date. As soon as your request comes in, i'll push to get it confirmed. I'm assuming we can collect donations of some kind to give to the Omni for use of the space? Just whatever is normal for an event like this at Gilman i guess. That's one of the questions on the form you'll see at the above link. Also, sudoroom will be able to supply a lot of cool electronic STUFF for the tables, so i think people who come to this will be very pleased. -jake note: sudoroom constantly has a big e-waste pile, and if you think the event will add to the unwanted electronics pile, we should plan for someone to take a truck to Universal Waste in Fruitvale after the event to clear it all out.
