Hey all,
I got word that Max Cadgi can't find his bike which seems to have been
removed from omni commons yesterday. I also had left a bike here last night
(stupidly I left it unlocked in the sudo room) that is also now gone!
If anyone sees a gold benotto 50th anniversary steel road bicycle frame,
possibly still with blue handlebar tape or a blue tool bag on the
handlebars, please let me know.
cc'd max so he can describe his bike too.

Please come join us today at 2pm to reassemble our large OpenTrons lab
robot.
We'll also have a discussion at 1pm with folks from BioCurious on whether
we want to spend thousands of dollars to participate in the iGEM synthetic
biology again this year, or whether we are going to put together a
parallel biohackathon for the DIYbio community.

A location that we're doing an install needs a little bit of electrical
work before we can put some radios on their roof.
Specifically, I think it would include:
- Breaking out wire from some existing conduit outdoors and adding another
section of conduit.
- Installing a NEMA (outdoor weatherproof electrical/etc.) box.
- Adding a breaker to the circuit breaker where the second line in the
conduit would connect.
This would be a huge help as this location has the potential to be a pretty
awesome hub and we just need a little work to get it up and going.
Thanks a bunch!

As one of the people with the ability to edit the Front Door Magnetic Card
Access System, I have a few questions for everyone to think about:
What are our requirements for information kept on each card? This
information is only available to people like myself with root access on
the door control computer.
I was going on the assumption that, for each card able to open the door,
we should store the following information:
1. the name or nym identifying the person who will be using the card
2. a way to contact that person (phone number or email)
3. at least one affiliation with a member collective (sudo, CCL, BAPS etc)
I have been seeing cards getting added to the records without #2 and #3
and I wonder if we, as Omni, thing this is a sustainable policy.
Also, I don't know how many people have access to the door control
computer, and access is presently anonymous. Is this something that
should be more curated? We have a mailing list access(a)lists.sudoroom.org
but I never get any responses from anyone on the list.
thanks for your thoughts on this.

Hey (Rob),
Do you know where sudo has peltier coolers? Marc, said he gave a bunch to

hi all,
one last thing from CCL - they now have a lab robot!
if you're interested in learning more about this robot and possibly being a
part of its assembly, operation, and programming, come to the protein
modeling meetup this fri 1/29 at 7PM:
http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/228129282/ . in addition
to protein modeling, this meetup will include discussion, plans, and next
steps for the robot.

As most of you probably have heard, CCL acquired a large OpenTrons
<http://opentrons.com/>lab robot (pics below), thanks to our friends
at Arcturus
Bio <https://www.arcturus.io/>. Which is awesome, except that we don't
really have space for it, or anyone who knows how to run it at the moment.
:-D
If we are going to keep this beast, we should also put together a core
group of people interested in care and feeding of a lab robot. *PLEASE
REPLY TO THIS EMAIL IF YOU'D LIKE TO BE INVOLVED!* There is a bit of a
community around the OpenTrons platform, and I'm sure we could come up with
some interesting applications.
Unfortunately, the robot was too large to fit in the truck, so it had to be
substantially disassembled to bring it over. So the first thing we should
do it to reassemble it. But before we can do that, we need to *figure out
WHERE to put it.*
Couple of options:
1) Install it on one of the lab benches. This would take up most of a lab
bench, plus some space next to it for the freezer.
2) If we lose the freezer, we should be able to cut down the axes so it
fits on about half a lab bench.
3) We could find some place elsewhere in the building to put it - likely in
the basement.
Welcome to any other suggestions!
Here's some pic of the robot in its full, functioning glory:
And here's its current sorry state, disassembled and taking up way too much
space:

Real vegan cheese, open insulin, alex n, mary/maureen, and other projects

I want to plan to have classes in robot operation by May. I think that open
insulin might have some use for the robot at some point, but not sure when.
I'm really interested in learning how to use a liquid handler robot.
I strongly feel that we should keep the robot. I have a feeling that once
Noel's protein software group gets going, we might start to attract more
programmers and engineers into the lab. The robot can be a bridge between
the fields of engineering and biology.

Now that we have a Robot, and a protein software group on the making, and
that my name was mention in a previous email,
I would like to emphasize the importance of volunteers to turn this
equipment and project into something useful to the lab.
I have realized that it takes a lot of work setting up, deploying, testing
and maintaining the software tools for the whole lab to
benefit. I worked with three new tenure-track faculty during my PhD, and
it took months of installing, scripting and debugging
before the software tools could be put to work on projects, and longer to
turn them into publications. Outside academia, it should
take less time and work.
At CCL and Biocurious, I have tried to help people with the CRISPR-CAS9 and
Insulin, only to find out that I cannot do this
by myself, even with the know-how. CRISPR-Cas9 is too large a protein to do
much on a personal computer, and I do not
have the required software to build a linker for the insulin project.
So, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage volunteers who want
to work on the robot or computational protein design to
join me for a presentation on January 29th. The meeting is on Protein
Structure, visualization, modeling and design
<http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/228129282/> and it is on
meetup.com. That will be the starting point for organizing volunteer
efforts for the software side of the Counter Culture Labs.
People of all levels of skill are welcome. I will provide papers, book
references and guidance for those who are not experts and want to learn
the fundamentals of the biophysics of protein dynamics and design.

Excellent - don't forget about the Bay Area Science calendar as well!
We could use some help making the class listing on Meetup a bit more
attractive. I pasted in some images, but the meetup editor is rather
minimalistic (no image resizing - really? ) I believe you can paste in from
Word or a web page though, and it'll preserve some of the formatting that
you cannot edit directly in Meetup (sigh)...

hi all,
i'm sharing a few things going on at CCL that i think you might be
interested in!
first: CCL'er Maureen is teaching an intro to biohacking course. it's every
other thursday with labs every other sunday. the first session is this
thurs. 1/28 from 7-9PM:
http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/228208919/
We may have some sudo (cc'd) friends near hayward who might be able to help
us out securing these! I think we could definitely use them.
Anyone able to help out with pick-up or temporary storage?

Subject: [Noisebridge-announce] Hack the Left: An Anticapitalist Hackathon
Hack the Left is an anticapitalist hackathon, February 5-7 at Noisebridge.
This is an experiment to see what happens when you get a bunch of leftists in a room for a weekend with the intention to advance liberatory and anticapitalist projects using
technology. This includes software projects like Tor and Signal, art projects like the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project and Men in Grey, hardware projects like mesh networks
and signal jammers, and tools for rad organizations like Anti Police-Terrorism Project and Food Not Bombs. It's clear that there's a huge amount of opportunity for
liberatory technology. It's up to us to build it.
We also need people involved with left-aligned organizations, technical or not, to show up and help guide all the technical folks towards doing things that are actually
useful. We want to build with, not for.
More information and the answers to probably all of your questions, please check out the website, hacktheleft.com (redirects to the Noisebridge wiki page).
Cost is a recommended donation of $15. In the unlikely event that this makes any money, it will be donated to Noisebridge.

does anyone know what model the door handle/lever/knob is or know where the

the quikest solution would be to change the mode to auto-relock...if it's
possible.
i guess we could just poke around on it to discern.

Worked when I first got it 6-7 years ago, has spent most of the time since
wrapped in plastic in storage. Guessing it needs a cleaning/calibration.
Preferred usages.
Someone with the skills interested in refurbishing it use at Sudo? Awesome!
Someone with the skills to refurbish it to sell it to benefit sudo?
Awesome!
Someone wants it for personal use? Awesome, make an offer, I'll split the
proceeds with sudo.
Someone wants it for personal use for free? That's okay, have at it.

Thanks Matt for holding it down so long! Maybe some of our newer
members can start hosting regular events.
i've been having a brainstorm over the last two days that has led me to the
conclusion that the best way for us to fundraise to save the omni might be
to host 215 only (no alcohol) lounge nights. we could charge $20-30 and
have different themes each night, i.e. hip hop, reggae, jazz, etc.
the oakland dispensaries are not allowed to has lounges like in sf.
we don't currently have a liquor license
the oakland dispensaries that get busted for having lounges only get simple
possession charges...even for having 30 pounds.
anyone with me?

over a dozen high-power VHF radio transcievers from police cars and fire
trucks, and some from relay towers (those are 2.1GHz)
all powered by 12VDC and transmitting up to 150 or more watts, on various
bands, mostly around 150MHz i think. Several types, mostly motorola brand.
I don't have the wiring harnesses, expecting you would just use them as RF
amplifiers since SDR transceivers are so cheap these days.
Ideally you will take them all. Please write with questions.

I may or may not be able to make it tonight, but I just wanted to say
that I'm really happy The Mess wants to be part of Omni, I
enthusiastically give my consent to our delegate saying "yes"
tomorrow, and I encourage others to do the same! Thank you!
They came to our last Omni meeting, and we took notes. You can read
the whole discussion here, with many questions answered:

Hi sudoers,
I am borrowing some kinects for an augmented reality project. I only need
one but many are labeled "bad" so I took a bunch, if anyone needs one hit
me up!

We have a lot more trash to haul, and there are probably some desirable
goodies in the pile for you scavengers out there, anyone able to make it to
omni tomorrow by 11am??

I always wondered about this. So the people with money are the ones
who decide who gets their money. Seems like the decisionmaking process
is tilted towards people who are middle class and wealthier, right?
Has there ever been talk about sponsoring decisionmakers who don't
have $100/mo to spare? That'd be awesome.

*Description*
“This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the
tranquilizing drug of gradualism” -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Over the last year, in the Bay Area alone, there have been dozens of police
murders. In San Francisco, we have most recently seen the brutal execution
of Mario Woods, in addition to police beating a disabled man in front of
the Twitter building and racist text messages exchanged between SFPD
on-duty officers.
In Oakland, we have seen 8 Black men murdered by police since only June of
2015. In fact, a recent graphic by Mapping Police Violence shows that in
2015, Oakland ranks third in police killings per million people in 60 of
America's largest cities. (https://www.facebook.com/

Police are the shock troops of gentrification. Mayors give them a mandate:
make this city appealing to developers by any means necessary. City
Councils fund police and constantly seek to expand their numbers and their
powers. As a result, people of color are being pushed out of cities at
unprecedented rates, by an out of control rental market, increased police
occupation and terrorism against communities of color, as well as
crackdowns on those who dare protest these unjust policies.
A year ago, people across the country began taking to the streets in
unprecedented numbers; storming shopping centers, blocking streets and
highways, interrupting cultural events and public transit. And the people
SHUT IT DOWN. We SHUT IT DOWN because there is a state-sponsored war on
Black, Brown, and other marginalized peoples in the United States. WE SHUT
DOWN BUSINESS-AS-USUAL because business-as-usual is an out-of-control
epidemic of police terror.
Last year, in partnership with comrades and allies, APTP launched 96 Hours
of Direct Action in the Bay Area, and answered a national call to Reclaim
King’s Radical Legacy which we did through a march that brought over 7,000
people into the streets of Oakland. We believe it is important for our
movement to draw on King’s legacy to ground ourselves, to reinforce our
conviction and confidence in the tactics and strategy of disruptive direct
action.
A year later, while we are starting to have an impact, we also see that we
have a long long way to go. So this Martin Luther King Day weekend,
Oakland’s Anti Police-Terror Project* is calling on you to help us SHUT IT
DOWN - again. Together, we will unleash the vast creativity and organizing
capacity of our communities to produce a spectrum of disruptive and
creative activity. In the spirit of MLK, we want these to actions to
meaningfully interrupt business as usual whether that be with direct
action, teach-ins, concerts or prayer vigils and to do so with action logic
that links our resistance to fighting racism, economic injustice, and
imperialism. We want you to plan these actions independently, but together
we will coordinate collective support for these actions through a
spokescouncil so that they have maximal support and impact.
The weekend will once again culminate in a King Day march that embodies the
true spirit of King's resistance to capitalism, imperialism and racism:

I've been a trustee of the SF chapter of the Awesome Foundation since it started in the summer of 2010. Since then we've given a $1,000 grant, no strings attached, to over 60 awesome projects that people have submitted to our website.
There's a new Oakland chapter starting up, and they're looking for trustees. Here's what's required to be a trustee:
* a sense of awesome
* put in $100 per month
* the ability to read through lots of projects once a month and show up to a meeting to consense upon an awesome project with the other 9 trustees
The Awesome Foundation is not an "official" non-profit. It's totally anarchy. There are over 80 Awesome Foundation chapters around the world. Collectively we've given away $1,875,000 to 1,875 projects since 2010.

If you're interested in being part of the new Oakland Awesome Foundation chapter, please email me off-list.

we are all starving for a warm place to hack, and sudoroom attendance is
reduced for obvious reasons.
what we need is a warm room to hack, and i propose the following:
we tarp above the server balcony of sudoroom, and seal the whole thing
like a room. To enter from the steps you have to pull back a magnetically
sealed thing or maybe we can make a hinged door thing, i don't know.
all the heat from the servers (and people hacking in there) will be
conserved and it will be social in addition to being warm.
I have some lighting that might be appropriate, to help people feel like
they're in the sun, as well as providing warmth.
also it will be a nice chance to clean up that area and move things around
and make it a hacking zone again.
HOW CAN I HELP?
if you have tarps or sail material or blankets or rope or anything you
think could be used to close off the area, let's talk about it to see if
it will work. If you bring it in on your own I hope you install it too -
it might take some carpentry or something to have places to attach it.
I think the ceiling should be about 10' high, or whatever it takes to
enclose the eastern shelves up there and securely seal to the wall.
if you know what any of the stuff is upstairs, and think you can clean up
or move things elsewhere, please do that. We have a lot of printers and I
don't know which ones are good or bad, and there are a lot of stereo
systems and computers up there that maybe need to be put back into
inventory, or put in the e-waste pile.
also it's really dirty and dusty up there, so if you know where is a
vacuum and/or brooms/dustpans please help get it clean up there.
please write back if you think this is a good idea.

I'm a trustee for the Bay Area chapter of the Awesome Foundation, and every
month we give $1000 to an awesome project. Art, whimsy, social endeavors...
See what we think is awesome at the link below. There's an easy
six-question application and no reporting requirements or strings attached
with the grant.

It sounds like kind of a noisy, hellish place, what with the server
noise, the claustrophobia, to say nothing of the high density of geeks,
but I guess I'm pretty well insulated so I'm failing to see the charm.
That typed, I do have a truck for transport, and a few spare tarps left
over from Occupy as well as some spare lights and power strips that
would be required to make such a place semi-habitable. Give me a holler
if and when you want this to happen.

Hey all,
Please join me this Saturday 1/9 at 7pm at Omni Commons to share and
reflect on the untimely passing of a good friend. I'd really like to
discuss informally with others some ways to respond to this situation in
our community.
For anyone who had the privilege to meet Goto during his brief visits to
Omni Commons and Sudo Room this fall, I have some sad news:
On November 14th of 2015, Goto and another person were found off the 101 in
Richardson Grove near Garberville. They had been ejected from a car that
came off the highway heading North. The highway patrol was unable to
identify which of the two men were driving and no criminal charges were
pursued. Goto was found deceased on the scene, the other person was
seriously injured and transferred to a hospital.
According to the Humboldt County Coroner I spoke with, this second person
was in a coma and probably did not come out of it. The CHP was not willing
/ able to provide me with any contact information of this other person or
their family, and I have been unable to proceed further on this thread.
I was also informed by the Coroner that there was alcohol found in the
blood of both victims. The CHP reported alcohol was found in the car as
well.
It is certainly unclear what exactly happened, what precisely led to this
crash, but regardless, this is a very sad tragedy, and most importantly,
Goto will be sorely missed.
For those that did not know him, you are very welcome to join and learn
about a dear friend and comrade who has left us in body, but not in spirit.
Love and solidarity,
Matt Senate
New Omni member application! We can discuss it at the Wednesday meeting.
Cheers,

*Hi everyone, The Mess Sketch Comedy Troupe had rehearsals here a month or
so ago. They love the space and what we are doing and decided to apply to
be a member collective. They will be at the delegates meeting on Thursday
to answer questions. Please discuss their application with your
collectives. *
1. Mission Statement
THE MESS is a theatre troupe and collective of writers, dancers, singers,
actors, and mischief makers who are out to do comedy that is a reflection
of the Bay Area’s diverse culture.
2. Origin and Group History
THE MESS is a sketch comedy troupe based in California's East Bay with
writers, dancers, singers, actors, and mischief makers from all over the
globe. In Fall 2011, Renée LeVesque and a group of theatre folks began
hosting a weekly pirate radio show on Radio Valencia in San Francisco. What
they quickly discovered is that doing live action theatre was their real
passion. They began asking the question, what if instead of trying to
convince a big theatre to do a show we liked, we just did our own show with
people whose work we enjoyed? What if we cast people who were not only
great actors, but willing to take risks and perform parts they normally
wouldn’t get cast for? What if we created a room for comedy writers that
was welcoming, where they could collaborate on scripts rather than compete
for stage time? The group rented space for trade at Chez Poulet, a
warehouse in San Francisco’s mission district. They rehearsed, pooled their
resources, and on Valentine’s Day 2012 put on their very first show at
Stage Werx SF.
As of 2015, the group has moved to the East Bay, expanded its troupe to
include over 30 performers, directors, writers, and designers. Each show is
a collective effort with each member contributing to the performance from
its creation to final bow. Everyone works, everyone participates, everyone
has a seat at the comedy table with a focus on performances that celebrate
the Bay Area’s diversity, and create immersive comedic experiences with a
lean toward the theatrical.
3. How would you participate in and contribute to the Omni?
THE MESS would like to be the house performance troupe at The Omni Commons.
To us that would mean participating in open houses, community outreach and
any other collective activity that The Omni hosts. We would also have
representatives participate in improving/repairing the Ballroom Space, the
Disco Room, and helping to maintain the other common spaces. THE MESS would
also host workshops, classes, and performances at The Omni to increase
interest and appreciation for the space itself and for the collectives that
call the Omni home.
4. How does your collective support itself financially? What would you be
able to afford in rent?
THE MESS sells tickets to each show at the rate of $15 plus (sliding
scale). Our ticket sales average 40- 60 people per performance. We plan to
use ticket sale revenue to help the Omni with its expenses. At present, we
can afford $300 per month total plus a share of the common expenses such as
utilities. If we are able to increase programing in 2016 (shows, workshops,
etc.), we would be able to discuss contributing more.
5. What are your space needs, especially for dedicated (locked or not
shared) space?
Ideally, we would like to steward, share and help improve and maintain the
Disco Room. Essentially, our typical needs are average 3 to 4 nights a week
in the evenings from approximately 6PM to 10PM.
In addition, we would volunteer to help coordinate the calendar for other
events that the Collective, Delegates and Commons wish to hold in the Disco
room. Improvements, we would like to build include a locked cabinet
(approx. 8 feet x 8 feet) in the Disco Room to store equipment, props, and
costumes.
Any other improvements we can help assist to support the Omni in renting
out the space to other groups in the community.
6. Statement of Solidarity
We, The Mess agree and are committed to the Omni Collective’s shared
political vision of more equitable communing of resources and meeting human
needs over private interests or corporate profit. If accepted as a member
collective, we promise to adhere to the Collectives’ solidarity and
anti-capitalist political perspective. The Mess has always and will
continue to practice openness, diversity and community through the arts and
in general practice.

I like the idea of a warm space. Sucks that it won't be wheelchair
accessible. Maybe once all the able-bodied people have been collected
into one corner, we'll stop blocking the aisles with junk in the rest
of the room. :)
I am having a busy week this week, and I wonder if anyone is available to
host Hardware Hacking Tuesday at 7pm in case I am late or unavailable.
It's easy, you just say hello to new people and tell them about the space,
and help them find things if you know how, and introduce people if you
think it makes sense.
You just have to be able to show up on Tuesday by 7PM and you can leave at
10 or 11 if you want.
thank you

i setup a raspberry pi connected to the big TV in sudoroom
if you need keyboard/mouse action it's plugged into #1 on the
keyboard/video/mouse switch on the red wooden standing desk (next to the
big TV) although the LCD monitor of that switch is not connected to the
pi.
you can ssh into it at its static IP which is 100.64.64.27
learn how to make it display things:
hint,
DISPLAY=:0
mplayer -vo none recording.wav
the speakers work :)
This is because our IAFCU account is closed, right? Anybody have a
working card we can use to pay for sudoroom.org?

this is a simple request. If you have extra power strips, we could use
them at sudoroom.
presently the 3d printer desk does not have enough outlets, and neither
does the computer building station to the right of it (the red standing
desk thing with the KVM switch and the CNC machine)
also if you have those plastic UPS things we can use those too, even if
their batteries are no good.
power strips can be left on the main table and we'll put them to work.
thank you!

It was somebody who recently became a Sudoroom member, and tried to
subscribe to the members list. Then you got an email because you're an
admin of the members list. Then you leaked their personal email by
forwarding it to sudo-discuss. You should not do that. As a list
admin, people are trusting you not to do that. Do you want to be a
list admin?
Hi friends,
I think I left my keys somewhere in the Omni... probably in the Entrance
Hall. Please reply if you happen to have my keys. It's one key ring with
one orange, one green, and one plain key.
Thanks!
