Here's a survey by city staff who are apparently crowdsourcing
artist/workspace data as it intersects with gentrifying cost of living and
cost of workspaces (but not obvious demographic factors like race). I'm not
sure what exactly this will accomplish since the damage is already pretty
deep, but there's a section at the end where you can directly share your
thoughts with the city staff running the survey. I really let them have
it!! :]

Linda Grant needs our help.
WHO IS LINDA GRANT?
For those that don't know Linda, Linda Grant is a mother and local Activist
here in Oakland.
Linda is a comrade that has been in the front line so many times helping
different causes that includes supporting mothers who had lost their
children due to Police brutality, etc. Now, Linda is the one suffering a
lost and needs support.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Last week Linda's grandson, a 2 year old, was killed in a car accident, and
her daughter lost one of her arms.
TWO WAYS TO HELP:
1- She reached out to me if we, at Omni Commons, can help her by providing
space where the repass can be taking place. They need to know this answer
desperately, and if it can be for free if possible. I offered my help to
find out, so that's why I am writing this email and I will follow up in
person with some of the working group that handle the events. -I asked
Linda for the date and time, but they don't know this yet, but they will be
providing that information by Monday at the latest.
2- While in communication I requested her any link to the fund rising for
the funeral so that I can share it with us here; so perhaps some of us can
help her with some money. Please help if you can. I know Linda from the
Occupy days, and she deserves all the help that we can give to her and her
family.

Complicated and precise systems can be designed more smartly with imperfect
tools and machines, demonstrated by the example of KORUZA, a low-cost

low-cost networks these days. However, a large number of such networks fail

Finance wg is working on getting our previous records in order, which
is the next big hurdle to applying for 501c3. Building wg is working
on fire safety, which is the first step to getting our permits
settled. Commons wg is working on making it easier to intake
volunteers, so we can hold more events.
someone was asking a while ago if we would sell this sewing machine.
it's the Juki, and it's an industrial machine that normally gets mounted
on a big motor table, and uses an oilpan under it, etc...
I think we should accept an offer of money for it and send it onto its new
home, we have too many sewing machines and this one would be a lot of
work, whereas the normal home sewing machines (the plastic kind with
internal motors) seem to be good enough for what people do with them.
As for the embroidery machine, it works great as a sewing machine and as
an embroidery machine so I think it's worth having around, but if we
decide to get rid of it I can get back onto that mission.

Sort of. You can make money, but most of it has to be from charitable
donations. There's complicated math about exactly how much - at least
60%, but for large donations only the first $5k counts towards the
total, it's based on a 4-year average, etc etc etc. The more

stuff, and there's incentive to structure as much income as you can as
"donations". The fundraising working group has been working for months

could pay members who teach (sound/lights/stage setup) others during
events. if we teach, instead of work, events; i think we have a better
chance of having the $ we get for events being considered as from a
charitable source.

I'm just back from a ceremony in Stockholm where I formally accepted the
SKAPA Innovation Award in memory of Alfred Nobel, which we announced
already back in September. The award is for our work on Elog.io and turning
the tables by putting provenance and users first, rather than copyright and
copyright holders. Over the past weeks, we've given a lot of thought to
Elog.io and what we would do different today. You can read that in my blog
post at FSFE <http://blogs.fsfe.org/jonas/?p=28>.
Some of this will serve as useful input as we work with Kennisland on a
fingerprint algorithm for videos, which enables the creation of a whitelist
and provenance record for videos. We're using some of the thinking from
Elog.io, and taking the opportunity while we're doing so to also update the
algorithm we used for images.
This is exciting work, but we would be love to have more people as part of
our team! For Commons Machinery, we're looking very specifically for
software developers with experience from developing Python, Node.js, and
with knowledge of RDF and semantic structures, ideally with a pinch of
maths and algorithm knowledge. Demonstrated ability to create a JSON API
with backend database and frontend tools would be welcome. Previous
knowledge of RabbitMQ and Celery beneficial.

venue to help better serve the community". Can you explain what you
mean by this? Who would be better served and how?
It's worth mentioning that the whole point of making money in the
ballroom is to help the Omni Commons survive as a horizontal
collective dedicated to the radical commoning of space and resources,
fighting gentrification, and creating alternatives to capitalism. I
hope we will always be mindful that we're doing it as a last resort,
it will never be the core of our project, everything will always to be
sliding scale down to zero, the community will still be able to block
events which conflict with our values and delegates can override
anything that a production collective does. And if someday we are able
to own the building and lower our expenses enough, we will return to
doing what we've wanted to do all along - offer everything for free to
the people who need it most.
This will bring changes if we are not careful. When people are making
money, they have an incentive to manipulate our processes in order to
keep making money, and new people are incentivized to join who care
more about money than about the project's values. All of our processes
are designed with the assumption of good faith, and vulnerable to
rules-lawyering unless we have a healthy, vigilant culture.

We had a long conversation with our lawyer about this a couple months
ago. Basically it would risk the nonprofit status of the whole
building.
He told us most things we would do count as "educational" and could be
structured as donations, and the things which absolutely don't, could
still make up to 30% of our budget. This is even if you paid people to
do the labor. I would say there are many simpler things we have yet to
try before resorting to a for-profit company, such as offering to pay
event bottom-liners, which wouldn't even require any structural
changes.

I wanted to bring out the Type A to print magnets for Omni's
Collabazaar, but can't find any of the 1.75mm plastic we used to have.
Where did it all go? Did it get used or taken? Is it stored in a
special place or do I have to run to home depot or something?
it's 1:30AM and giant rats are fighting under the big wooden shelf covered
with rotting fruits and vegetables.
this is a seperate problem from the fact that at least one of the
containers is smelling really bad, and at least one is breeding fruit
flies.

Shawn Landden showed up today @ Noisebridge. Shawn was banned by
consensus in 2013 and has a criminal history crossing 3 states, having
been arrested for for assault, harassment, felony stalking, violating
restraining orders, and stalking.
Shawn knows full well that he is 100% NOT WELCOME at Noisebridge, and
showed up today with a scraggly beard apparently hoping he'd go unnoticed.
