Hi there,
I've been to sudoroom a couple of times for JS Study Groups and was very
excited to find sudo's views on tech and social justice seem to resonate
with my own. The space seems really cool and friendly and I'd love to spend
some more time there and meet folks: I have tomorrow off and was thinking
of coming by to hack on some projects for part of the day (July 2nd).
I was thinking of heading over early afternoon (maybe around 1200h-1300h).
Is anyone going to be in the space tomorrow around then that can let me in
and feels like showing me around?
Thanks!

Engineers don't immediately respect you if you look like a young girl despite years of experience ; having money is so important ;
People give advice but it's not always correct; there are lots of cool people who who'll help you ;
Start up events are important but you must prioritize ; you'll meet a lot of people but it's important to filter politely ; this stuff is hard; if people find out you're working on a Health App they'll aggressively push 1500 calorie greasy burritos on you;
Unfortunately there are a lot of cultural forces at play ; companies do not really make money when people eat less and get healthy ; most major health problems can be solved in the U.S. By avoiding most processed and fast foods not by buying more healthy food ; exercise doesn't really make you that much healthier compared to avoiding most snacks and standard American diet
Like Marc said take notes. Usually most of your thoughts are wrong often you're right
I came out of it learning how to code, avoiding making html 5 apps, lost a marriage, a boyfriend, still nearly bankrupt but I learned a lot!

I regrettably learned of some of our fellows' misfortune with fire recently
& wish to relay an offer that may provide temp housing for some of those
affected.
Offer: RV needs registration & therefore off street parking for a few
months in exchange for free use w/hacking privileges.
RV is in good condition & owner hopes it stays in such. Cheers

I've just paid July's rent and June expenses totalling $2299.29.
We currently have $644.98 in our bank account. This is approximately $6355
less than we want to have in order to have 3 months of expenses in our
reserve.
We are currently making $309.96/week on Gratipay, payouts being sent to our
PayPal account in lieu of Balanced payments shutting down.
We made $675 this month via Stripe. If you haven't switched over yet from
Gratipay, this is your reminder to do so! You can register and sign up for
payments at https://sudoroom.org/humans, or make a one-time $ or BTC
donation through https://sudoroom.org/donate.
All told, this means we made $1911 this month, about $400 less than we need
to be making to be in the black.
If you're a member and not donating, please for the love of bob, get on it!
Sudo needs financial support now more than ever.
With love,

Hello Humans,
A person of color writing here, if that means anything. I said that if that
means anything, because every time I go to the Omni I am NOT checking out
what color is who, but instead I look for who I can work together with, or
share ideas with, or socialize with, etc..
About a week ago or less I meet a Black Woman at Sudoroom, and we talked
very briefly. And, even though it was only for about ten seconds or so, I
felt that she means well. Her energy felt in place. I think she was
Rannette.
She wanted to use a phone charger; but were being used and she said will
come back later on when the phone be done (or something along the line).I
wish I had more positive things to say about about Rannette, but I haven't
other opportunities to be in the same area at Omni when she is there.
I have been part of Sudoroom for about two years, and even thought Morgan
and I only have had very few short conversations I have never felt threaten
by her.
I have respected her space and she has done the same in return. So, based
on my observations I want to share that Morgan cares for our community.
Outside the Omni I have also observed Morgan in many rallies and marches. I
have seen her giving her time, energy, passion, and care while fighting for
the communities, specially for people of color and poor.
And that for me, means a lot. And I respect that.
I would like to remind everyone that we all are not perfect and that if
from time to time we may do something wrong, but let's not the last thing
the have done what will stain us forever. Perhaps when we make a mistake is
when our comrade needs us the most, and not only when all is happiness.
Solidarity is more than a word. Let's not get divided.
I hope this situation be resolved in the good of Rannette and Morgan; and
for the good of the community; one leaving or both leaving I will consider
it a lost.
Sincerely,
Daniel

Rannette physically attacked a woman here today for the second time in one
month. Rannette was being very loud about an incrimiwhile but eventuallyg
thing when I asked her to not have that conversation in the space she began
screaming at me and another woman stepped in telling her to stop yelling
saying that she also needed to stop sleeping here and Rannette walked up to
her drawing her hand back like she was going to slap her screaming bitch in
her face then started screaming bitch at me. Threatening to leave and I
affirmed that she should leave. Then She attacked the woman physically by
checking her. We asked her to leave for violating the safe space policy and
refused for a while eventually left. This month I have sent multiple emails
about Rannettes behaivour to the mediation group and but i have gotten no
response.

I'm also willing to try to steward or mediate.
And I hate to say this again but, why is this thread in sudo-discuss?
AFAIK the people involved are not Sudoroom members and the events did
not happen in Sudoroom.
i have been spitting in rage for the last couple of days since the comment
"just because she is black it is ok to be transphobic" and the total lack
of galvanization around this, but now that it's clear what's going on, I
have to say that you've all done a commendable job of excluding black women
and men from the omni. No wonder i feel so miserable there all the time.
maybe we can get some white activists doing something OTHER than excluding
people of color from our "community" space?
Hey Folks,
I'm noticing that the sudo-announce list does not get used often enough for
many informational postings that rightfully belong there. I for one am
wanting to mitigate the amount of email exposure I get to the constant
barrage of BS and negative energy from discuss list but don't want to
"miss out" when opportunities come up. I would like to sign off the
discuss list and encourage people to use the sudo-announce list more as
appropriate. For example, I think the email thread about the Google
disability hack thing should have gone to sudo-announce as well as
sudo-discuss, and then people can continue the conversation over
sudo-discuss as they wish.

Heyall,
My name is Ken Litchfield and I'm with BAAM/CCL. I had talked to a few
folks about the fermentation group and how to become involved. I learned
that it seems to have been on a bit of a hiatus for a few weeks/months, so
I volunteered to get it cranked back up, beginning with cleanup,
reorganization, and rejuvention/startup of cultures over the next few
weeks. And perhaps then start having regular bigger events perhaps monthly
or more often.
I understand that there are a number of folks in Sudo and CCL that have an
interest in the area.
Last Wed eve we had our first clean up/reorganization of the fermentation
area along the border between Sudo and CCL. There have been some rodent
problems in the area so part of the intent is to make it easier to keep the
area clean and rodent free. We have moved the equipment and fridge from
positions in the middle of the room to the periphery along the CCL side of
the Sudo wall L-ing over to the sterile trasfer hood. We removed the stuff
from under and behind the hood so we can move the hood against the wall. We
didn't toss out anything except obvious trash and all the stuff we found is
on top or under the folding table and the cabinets. We didn't take
everything out of all the cabinet drawers because some were locked and we
couldn't determine who had the keys.
We welcome the continued participation of any folks who have been involved
in the past and invite any of you who would like to start participating.
Each Wed we'll be having an activity evening in the fermentation area for
the next several weeks. We could use assistance with any of the following:
Plan is to use a couple of the doors from under the ballroom stage storage
area and place them on top of paired cabinets as open work space where the
cabinets and folding table are located now. Storage would be underneath and
on shelving on top and in the back of the door tabletops.
Need several strong folks at each corner of the sterile transfer hood for a
couple minutes to slide it back against the wall.
There are several kombucha cultures in 5 gallon buckets or smaller mason
jars that aren't labeled. If you know the history and provenance of any of
of them please label them with creation dates, components, human
companions, and any other pertinent info. They all appear to be pretty much
viable so if they aren't claimed we'll clean them and rejuvenate them with
the standard formula and go from there with new labeling. If you would like
to assist with rejuvenation please bring some black tea for next Wed nite.
We found sugar in storage.
There are some bags of hops and yerba mate that make for rodent nesting
material so those and any food or grain items need to be kept in heavy duty
lidded plastic or metal containers. We have some such containers but could
probably use more.
Under the folding leg table there are several boxes of glass bottles. We'll
be giving those to glass recycling unless someone claims them. We
understand that some of the commercial kombucha bottles were intentionally
collected. Well keep these if someone is planning on using them. Our
current plan is to make announcements as batches become ready for imbibing
and folks can drink it there or take it home in their own containers. We
plan to keep several standard kombucha mothers and several secondary
ferments for special flavors like Orange Julius, root beer, candy cap, jun,
etc.
We don't plan to put any limits on the potential ferments that we have so
kombucha, beer, wine, mead, yeast rising bread, njera, and more are all
welcome.
My particular interest is herbal meads but also all things fermentable.
Please email me if you have any interests, concerns, plans, questions, etc
involving the fermenation area.
Thanks Ken

Hellos,
I am free until 3pm or so and I would like to use that time by going to the
Pride Parade or by working in the Omni.
Pride Parade:I can meet you at the Omni and then we can take BART.
Omni: Well, this will be work, running the network cable from above La
commune register area to the Server area.
Please let me know if interested on doing any of the two.

Hellos, here are the deets:
CONFIG:
Intel Atom CPU N450 @ 1.66GHz x 2
2GiB RAM
HD 243.9 GB
STATE
About five or so years old machines. -All of them need new keyboards, and
about 4 of them need new displays.
REPAIR CO$T:
Some people won't mind typing on the keyboard holes, while we buy the
keyboards, oh yeah, the cost. I ran a quick search and each keyboard is
between 7-15 bucks each.
WHY?
The current owners don't like them, besides that they been vandalized
(Users removed keyboard keys from all keyboards, and about three w smashed
displays). Besides that they feel that they run too slow for the software
they would like to use.
MY TAKE:
My take is that for Sudoroom they will be just fine. I brought one home to
test and installed Ubuntu 14.4 LTS 32Bit (they may take 64Bit) and it is
running fine while browsing, emailing, IRC-ing. :)
WHAT IS THE THING?
There are two thing, a) I cannot be the Sudo representative. b) The process
usually takes about a month - two months to get it completed; so we can
start getting the ball rolling next week.
Daniel
p.s. of course we should get it! :)

Hey friends,
The Finance WG is weighing the pros and cons of using Quickbooks Online vs.
a hosted version of regular Quickbooks and it's looking like we'd be best
served by using a hosted version which the Finance WG can remote into.
I have no idea what this actually means in terms of cost or setup and was
wondering if any of you have thoughts.
If it's too much trouble to do ourselves, we can pay a service to host QB
for us for the time being but that can begin to get a little pricey.
Ideas?
Niki
Hi Sudoers
I have a friend visiting from out of town for the weekend and he really wants to go to the Exploratorium. I'm wondering if anyone has passes/tickets or works there and can get us in for free? We have to go tomorrow Sunday June 28. membership with guests works too.

Sierk (a potential new member) and I came to the omni to finish the run
that somebody started at the basement, but walking around we saw that there
are more things pending.
I am planning to be here for a couple of hrs more or less.
Anyhow, I started a list of things to do (
https://pad.riseup.net/p/omniwiring ), in case someone would like to add
more items or see what is pending:
OMNI NETWORK WIRING - LIST TO DO
June 27, 2015
PENDING RUNS:
* From the computers by the kitchen to the Server Area
* From Server area to Basement
TERMINATIONS:
* Cable that come from the door at the corner to the computers in the
second floor.
OLD RUNS THAT NEED TO BE RE-DONE:
* The phone line (I am 50% guilty of this lousy run) needs to redone at
least from the CCL to Server room.
* A white cable comes from the basement and goes under the door to the
Server area.
NOTE: people know that there is a 16 port switch under the 3D printers.
Thanks,
Daniel

I saw this happen, it was pretty shitty. She was yelling shit from out
on the street. Doesn't give me hope for a resolution.
I've shared an item with you:
Omni Pre-Inspection Tasks By Room
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oGPOLpvot90UD7ne5zGVWwL-hYMYmaO_wKm…
It's not an attachment -- it's stored online. To open this item, just click
the link above.
This is a multi-sheet spreadsheet doc listing all the tasks we need to
complete before we can pass our inspections - what David put together, but
split up by room.
These sheets are also physically printed and taped up in the following
areas:
* La Commune: Next to ADA bathroom
* Ballroom: Next to chandelier lights
* Ticket Booth Room: On the door
* Crow's Nest: on the inner OpAl door to the crow's nest
* Sudo / CCL: On the west side of the yellow locker in the middle of the
room
* Rise Above: To the left of the sliding doors
* Basement: Below the lights to the basement
* TIL: Above the little mailbox outside the door to the office
* Cafe Balcony: On the eastern refrigerator
* Disco Room: Below the lights to the room
Please do take on a project if you meet the requisite skill level, then
cross off things once complete. Even better, send an update to
building(a)lists.omnicommons.org - we meet every Monday at 8pm. We are
particularly in need of folks experienced with carpentry and electrical.
Primary projects right now are continuing the ballroom south wall
soundproofing (primarily hanging sheetrock) and installing firesafe and
accessible door closers and panic bars. Ping the building list if you'd
like to help out!
<3jenny
Hellos,
For those working by the 3D working area here a few notes.
1) For your convenience and to help to clear up some of the extra cables in
the vicinity a 16 port switch has been installed under the 3D Printer
table.
2) All the extra network cables removed from the 3D printing area are now
in the Server area, if you need them.
3) The red and black color electrical cable that was feeding power from the
basement has been relocated. Now the power is coming from the Server Area;
but this should be considered a TEMPORARY solution, since it should be
better to have a formal electrical outlet instead.
Thank you Sierk (he is not in this list yet), for helping; very appreciated
it.

To me this just sounds like: "You can't criticize anything I do,
because I'm rich".
In theory, inviting shitty things to Sudo & Omni gives us a big
opportunity to challenge them. But doing that without just getting
co-opted would take a lot of work and struggle and I don't know if we
have the resources for that right now, let alone the risk of failing
to challenge them enough and just being complicit. Also, if we
specifically reject this event and tell them exactly why, and what
kind of things we'd like to see from them in the future, that's also a
way to influence them. If they're really well meaning, they'd listen
and take it to heart. But if all they really care about is money and
prestige, then they'll just smile and move on and we didn't waste all
our time and energy. Not holding my breath, personally.

I'm no longer in town but I have something to say.
I think this is a good opportunity to explore. I hear your concerns about
their approach, Ryan. I am particularly irked by the inspirational music in
the video. *shudders*
That said, I would love to take this opportunity to transmit our collective
concerns and critiques to them...call it "hacking their framing". :]
Whether one likes it or not, these folks have a lot of power in shaping
popular technology development and understandings into the future. While we
may not revolutionize Google, we can at least encourage them to do their
bidding in a way that is a little less evil.
I'm happy that they're directly reaching out to hackerspaces, which means
they may take notes. I'm also happy that they're reaching out to us because
our social ecosystem is quite a bit more diverse than theirs and therefore
has more potential for wisdom (I wonder, have they reached out to
Mothership or LOL?). The tech industry (or any business that requires a
steep social capital (whiteness, maleness, ability to work 40+ hours/week,
etc.) in order to have a better (or any) chance at getting employed), after
all, is largely ableist and culturally stagnant. Please excuse my nesting.

Subject: [sudo-info] reaching out from google.org regarding an assistive
technology hackathon
To: <info(a)sudoroom.org>
Cc:
Dear Sudoroom community,
I'm reaching out from the philanthropic arm of Google, Google.org which
supports non-profits aimed at technical innovation.
In our attempt to expand opportunity and independence for people with
disabilities we have recently launched a campaign
<https://get.google.com/disabilitiesimpactchallenge/open-call.html> aiming
to identify
and support non-profits doing innovative work in the assistive technology
space.
The reason for this email is that in addition to the campaign,we are
thinking of organizing
a hackathon around mid-late august focused on assistive technology using this
event <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_BQzJD9gpo>
as a source of inspiration.
The basic idea is to bring the need-knowers (people with disabilities and
their
families/caregivers) together in the same room with tech folks
(hackers/makers/designers) and develop prototypes for affordable products
that
could serve the needs of the community of people with disabilities.
We thought that the hacker community of Sudoroom might find it
interesting/relevant
and some folks perhaps wish to participate.
We are trying to gauge the level of interest in something like this from
the hacker/maker/developer community.
Thoughts ? Ideas ? What should we think of to make this event more
relevant/interesting to the folks involved ?
With kindest regards,
On behalf of Google.org,
Arie Meir

Subject: [sudo-accounts] Important: No more bank payouts. Action required.
To: Gratipay Support <support(a)gratipay.com>
Greetings!
You're receiving this message because you're one of the nine people
who have been withdrawing money from Gratipay 2.0 directly to your
bank account.
Our provider for bank payouts, Balanced Payments, is going out of
business, and they stopped providing bank payouts last week. We tried
pretty damn hard over the past couple months to migrate to a new
provider for bank payouts, so that we could provide uninterrupted
service for you, but we failed. Sorry. :-(
Our backup plan is PayPal. To maximize the chance that you receive
your payout this week in some fashion, we chose to configure your
Gratipay account to send money via PayPal to the verified email
address we have on file for you—the one you're receiving this email
on—from now on.
Please update the PayPal address on your Gratipay settings page as
necessary, to ensure that we route your payouts properly starting this
Thursday.
If PayPal is not a good option for you, please get in touch and let's
see what we can figure out.
You've been very patient with us throughout the turmoil of the last
couple months. While we can't quite say that we've fully survived the
Balanced shutdown yet (due to its repercussions for us), it's a big
milestone to be processing at all even though Balanced has in fact
started shutting down. Thank you for believing in us as we continue
rebuilding Gratipay! :-)
As always, feel free to reply here privately, or join our public
discussion on GitHub.

Okay, cool, we will come on Tuesday.
Mike and I talked about meeting there the earlies possible, he mentioned
even 4pm would work for him. But, I have to confirm the time to him on
Tuesday, since I don't know how early I can leave from work that day.
I will try to message the list, so you know.
Thanks,
Daniel

Could someone please give me the update on the wiring by the corner's
entrance?
when I left today, there was an issue that the existing drill bit was not
long enough.
If making the whole, for the network cable, still not done, please let me
know.
A friend and I can come on Tuesday with a few feel long drill bit to take
care of it.
I just need to confirm my friend that it still needed; so we can meet there
on Tuesday.
Many thanks in advance,
