Invisible Technologies, Rainbook Appropriate Technology 1977
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-02-at-11…>
Be resourceful, clever and wise. Some inspiration from Rainbow way back
from 1977
From Rainbow Appropriate Technology, 1977:
INVISIBLE TECHNOLOGIES
The best technologies are often the invisible ones-where people have
figured out how to avoid problems rather than to solve them. Often all that
is required is a perceptual change such as seeing grasshoppers as an
airborne mobile protein harvesting and conversion unit-a food source-rather
than a destructive pest. Or living near where we work rather than building
better transportation technologies. Or eating lower on the food chain so
you don’t have to pay for or grow food for the conversion losses of meat
animals. Or planting trees rather than air conditioners.
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Screenshot-2024-09-02-at-11…>
The second-best technologies are also invisible. They’re based on people’s
skills and relationships rather than machines
-the skilled calligrapher drawing a line or carpenter cutting a line rather
than needing a jig or machine: good neighbors rather than locks on doors;
caring for the ill or elderly at home rather than in a Home; hiking rather
than mini-biking: an auto mechanic or piano tuner’s ear rather than a
tuning machine.
But there’s always a range of skilis and scales and situations where things
need to happen, and we’re interested in expanding the range of tools for
situations that have been neglected, and learning when there are good
reasons for choosing one scale rather than another. One size can’t fit
every situation well, and a technology that tries is likely not to fit any
well.
Having to solve problems without money usually results in people getting
resourceful and finding creative ways to use wbat is already there. Money
usually makes us lazy and we end up paying for our laziness and second rate
solutions to problems. Appropriate Technology repeatedly contains good
examples of a.t. equipment and ideas. Here are some of the interesting
projects they’ve covered recently.
• A Nigerian project making medical aids such as arm splints, spinal
jackets and cervical collars from broken plastic drain-pipes. The products
are made by marking the pipe with a paper template, cutting out with a
hacksaw and handstretching the plastic softened over a flame. The resulting
equipment works better than previous products, as they can be easily
adjusted by a nurse or doctor for a perfect fit for every individual and
are waterproof, strong, cheap and reusable.
medical devices*
- A candle-making merry go-round that produces 600 candles per hour with
a single operator (could be solar heated?).
- Nethouse horticulture in Botswana, where it is noted that a high
percentage of a plant’s water requirement is not for growth but to cool it
during respiration. Nethouses shade and cool, reducing water use by 2/3,
and keep birds, insects and hail out.

we had fun looking over SIgnal's open source code this week. We're going to
explore their repositories, they create a lot of cool libraries.
They used to hang out at SudoRoom from time to time, but that was a while
ago. I'm not proposing we do advertising or anything, but they are totally
open source and share so much - is there any way any of them would be
interested in coming in and giving a lightning talk?
Messaging and surveillance is in the news lately and they are neat, it
would be cool to just have a roundtable and whietboarding ...

Hello, I wanted to give a recap on what's happening with Omni Commons
building sale and operations.
Earlier this month, Omni Commons had three options to prevent foreclosure.
The most promising option was to sell the building to CALLI (an affiliate
nonprofit of EB PREC https://ebprec.org/). Once EB PREC confirmed they were
able to fund the purchase, there's been a big push to work as fast as
possible to finalize, given we are on a tight deadline to prevent
foreclosure.
*Acronyms: CALLI stands for Collective Action and Land Liberation
Institute, and EB PREC stands for East Bay Permanent Real Estate
Cooperation. CALLI does not have any projects under its belt yet, but its
board are all current staff at EB PREC.
Everyone currently renting spaces in Omni Commons are getting offered
leases to stay. These leases are still in negotiation, and that's the main
work that's left for us to do right now. Sudo Room is being offered a 34
year lease to stay in the bocce ball court space. We will have to pay more,
but we are also going to have some well-needed commons upgrades (roof
renovation is planned, bathroom renovations, rat proofing, etc all to
come!). Also there will be some new much needed help in managing the
building day-to-day and in conflict resolution. How the building is
operated will ultimately be decided by CALLI, but there's lots of back and
forth and they really want to work with us on this. Some plans include
creating separate entrances and exits for SR and CCL, and restricting
access hours + full building access. The entrance hall will continue to
host the Free Store for now, with plans to add a cafe again up front later.
That is not the focus right now though as there is this big hurry just to
meet foreclosure legal work deadlines and finalize collective + tenant
leases.
This is really exciting, because just a month ago we were at a super severe
risk of foreclosing. We still are cutting it really close, with us
currently having received a notice of default from the foreclosure agency,
and for us being in property tax default. The consensus among the building
was that foreclosing would not be worth the uncertainty, difficulty, and
harm to the community that the building being bulldozed would likely cause.
So that EB PREC was able to step in at this short notice with the funds at
hand, and a willingness to dedicate all this time into making something
work out is really unbelievable.
All of the meeting notes are public on the wikis if you want more info, but
also I'm happy to share more info as requested.

It's been suggested that we have a meeting tonight to discuss the final
steps transferring the building.
I'm not sure we have a ton to talk about but I'll be on at 7pm Today. I'll
send the link when it starts.

This will mostly be around brainstorming in-person UX meetups in our space
in Oakland. Any online meetups will be purely for brainstorming and
directing energy to in-person meetups.
Non-Profit Mission
Note that *SudoRoom is a non-profit*, so we limit promoting for-profit
companies such as Artificial Intelligence startups, etc. And since our
mission is to serve Oakland I am focusing a lot of the brainstorming topics
to enrich our awesome, diverse city, which is the best example of American
values and definitely has a small-town feel that is completely lost in most
of US suburbia.
While we're poor, we are sexy. I have spoken to other folks, and for-profit
hackathons or corporate meet-ups simply do not have interesting UX
collaborations as they are not a priority there. I've noticed that tech
meetups unfortunately default to treating UX designers are photoshop
jockeys who are there to make pretty screens and not much else.
Since we're a social good non-profit it is possible to make really kickass
UX however you want, which is actually good in the long run for UX
Designers' portfolios! Speculative design is an option. We just ask that we
keep the focus on non-profit tools and on social good as that's part of our
mission.
Slides
Slides exist to be ignored and make us fall asleep but I made some here in
case we have to go beg for funding.

OUR LOCAL ETHIOPIAN BODEGA DOWN THE STREET HAS THESE HEALTHY DELICIOUS DABO
KOLO SNACKS!
Hacker snacks aren’t only chips, pizza and junk food!
At our recent hardware hack night we had some super-healthy Dabo Kolo fried
dough snacks from our bodega next door. It’s an Ethiopian place down the
street that has a cute cat and sells injera (we’ll be talking to them more
in further blog posts).
These dabi kolo fried dough snacks have less than five ingredients and they
are all real, so they pass the Michael Pollan “Is it real food?” test!

Incidentally, the city of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia just built a huge metro
rail line <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Ababa_Light_Rail>, the first
in Africa I think? There’s nothing more cyberpunk than public
transportation! We are down the street from the MacArthur BART and next to
two bike share stations run by Bay Wheels as well.
There are over 20,000 folks from Ethiopia and Eritrea in Oakland <http://At

OAKLAND RULES BECAUSE IT’S SMALL TOWN AMERICA AT ITS BEST
*We love Oakland,* and being physically located in the most diverse,
warmest and most all-American small town vibe place in the entire United
States is something that SudoRoom hackerspace is proud of. While we’re
proud to be part of the hacker community, we aren’t “just another”
hackerspace. While Oakland has problems, it is also the most unique and
interesting place in California in our opinions, with a wealth of talent.
Unlike most places in America, it’s easy to walk or bike past dozens of
locally owned businesses, so SudoRoom and Oakland Temescal have a
small-town mainstreet feel you wouldn’t find in other places in the USA.
You really get to know the local business owners here in a way that’s
simply not possible in the other cities with more clean-cut reputations.
And our local businesses aren’t *only *centered around yoga studios and
chain store coffee shops – Oakland has Korean grocery stores visited by
real working class Korean folks, same with the Yemeni and Ethiopian and
Eritrean grocery stores. We’re down the street from the East Bay Center for
Reuse <https://www.creativereuse.org/> where teachers get discounted art
supplies*(gee, I wish they didn’t have to spend their own money to teach
kids but that’s another matte. At least they are still teaching art and not
some soulless corporate multiple choice STEM module like in other places in
the USA)* and hardcore Korean noodle joints.

As you know, after holding a session on “Learning how to Learn
<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/LearningToLearn>“, we realized that the best
thing about SudoRoom is that we love tech but want to *use our tech wisely* for
the forces of good. We decided to switch to a whiteboard first format with
no online or hybrid component, just a bunch of human beings face to face
during our Rust session at women and non-binary hack night!
It was a little different. Of course we still had laptops nearby, but
mostly closed, and a tablet if we absolutely had to look things up online.
at Women & Non-Binary Hack Night
What resulted as a cool “jam” as just about everybody was able to grab a
whiteboard marker and participate!
We were nervous… would this work? We set up the whiteboards, laid out the
tables, and hoped people would be into this freestyle form of symposium!
Mothball and Jade led us through a journey of all their favorite ins and
outs of Rust and even the Haskell programming languages.
Algebraic Data Types: Let’s Start with the Wikipedia Definition!
Jade explained that even though the initial definition of “algebraic data
types <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_data_type>” in the wikipedia
entry has language that’s a little scary if you’re not deep on math or
computer science, you can just take apart the definition piece by piece to
learn while in a conversation with others.
off with a wikipedia entry and whiteboarding from there with Jade!
It feels a lot less intimidating if you can ask people in person, and
sketch things out in examples. Plus people who work as engineers could give
out examples (like a URL builder out of an enum in Swift), creating a
mini-symposium of happy, smart people drawing things out on a big
whiteboard for fun!
about Recursion and Stack Overflow in Whiteboard
It’s nice to step away from the computer screen and discuss recursion and
stack overflow. So much less dry than an online class, and these notes I
took were outside of the whiteboard fray!
programmers LOVE recursion!
This was also a fun way to get embedded engineers in dialogue right before
we went down the rabbit holes journeying from Rust to Haskell (!) But for
the others at the women and nonbinary hack night, it’s nice to get down
lowwwww and talk about memory in these systems programming languages and
even the exotic, weird languages like Haskell.
get Weird in a Good Way
Some parts got pretty wild: I think at this point Mothball was showing us
how they used an enum (algebraic data type) in Rust to do math for all
natural numbers… I think it was a “Reverse Polish notation” calculator?
Can you imagine using enums to do all your addition of natural numbers?
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Untitled-Notebook-5-3.jpeg>
The notes had us on a discussion of pattern matching in Rust with algebraic
data types. When you wield algebraic data types the right way, you can do
tons of pattern matching and avoid uncertainty and errors, especially in
data structures that handle stuff like network calls! The pattern matching
can avoid tons of boilerplate code and if/else statements and totally nasty
crashes!
matching is awesome in Rust! And it makes invalid states totally
unpresentable!!!!!!!
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Untitled-Notebook-5-7.jpeg>
The notes get a little wacky here, but what was nice was that we could take
notes and investigate later.
https://gist.github.com/CMCDragonkai/9f5f75118dda10131764
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Untitled-Notebook-5-5.jpeg>
And it was so nice! Everyone stood physically closer to each other, and
even though a lot of us were noobs at Rust and had never touched Haskell,
the advanced people made it easy for senior and advanced beginners to
understand. Even people who usually program C were able to join in!
<https://sudoroom.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_9930.heic>
Fun times! We look forward to more in-person meetups. Why meet online when
everyone is sick of online meetings? Is it really healthy for people to
only socialize and do hacking from a discord channel in their bedroom, when
it’s so much nicer to connect with people in person in a crazy hackerspace
like sudoroom? we say YEAH!

Hey
We're really approaching the deadline wrt saving Omni. I propose that we
try and have meetings more often during this time, to more quickly address
consensus decisions to new questions that come up.
With that said, should we meet this Wednesday at 7p?
We could make this fun and perhaps some of us meet in-person with some food
potluck style.
Thoughts?
Cere
Shreya from CAST is hosting another CAST x Omni meeting tonight (Tuesday
8/13) 6-7PM. The topic today is "transitioning out of the building and/or
buyer due diligence."
*Recap of what we are discussing in CAST and delegates meetings*
A short recap is - Omni is still trying to prevent looming foreclosure
(soonest auction sale would be Sep 6). The two tangible options to do so
are through Phillip Bell/City in Motion (CiM) or EBPREC. CiM proposal is
more progressed at this point, and funding for it (through a loan) is
secured, but EBPREC's, if approved by their board, would be a safer option.
At this point, it is pretty certain that both options would mean Omni's
whole current board (delegates and officers) would step down and be
replaced by new board members. Current Omni Commons members would no longer
controlling operations.
If foreclosure ends up happening, the collectives will be looking for
different places to rent. It is unsure if any profit will be made after
foreclosure. If there is any profit, one proposal is to donate any funds to
Sogorea Te. There have also been vague proposals of how to split up the
money amongst collectives, or keeping it in the Omni nonprofit.
This is a big change that we are going to have to decide on very soon, and
I hope we get as many people involved in the discussion as we can.
For more info, I think last week's meeting is a good overview of where we
are at now: https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2024/08/08_Delegates.
*how to join the meeting tonight*
It is a hybrid meeting, with CAST joining remotely. We have it set up
conference style in one of the Omni basement rooms (pictured below).
If you'd like to attend from your own device, reply to me and I will share
the zoom link.

Regarding Parking:
As you know, there's an epidemic of car vandalism. - Don't park on
Telegraph around the Omni.
-
Bay Wheels bike share is the best option, the residential streets to the
east of Shattuck are quite wealthy and less vandalized for some reason
parking and then biking is a great solution.
-
Park a 5 minute walk on Dover street between 47th and 44th (the fancy
residential across the street on Shattuck
-
Also around the large Walgreens parking lot at 5055 Telegraph is much

OmniCommons serve folks in need with food not bombs, etc. so be
considerate of members and people hanging out in the front. They are not
going to harm you or your car.

Hey Sudo Room,
I want to check if there is an official lease that Sudo Room has with Omni
Commons in terms of leasing the specific space that Sudo Room does at this
time ?
or even an unofficial lease
Is Sudo Room considered a "fiscally sponsored project" of Omni Commons in
terms of 501c3 relations ?
Without Omni Commons, does Sudo Room exist as a legal entity ? (501c3 stuff)
I am checking in with a community organization that is oriented towards
community land trusts about finding a partner organization to join Omni
Commons in potentially paying off the mortgage in exchange for equity, etc.
The organization is non-profit 501c3 that is oriented towards preventing
the usual capitalist development of land (preventing Omni Commons from
being turned into "Omni Condos" or "Omni Shopping Mall", etc.)
and they work with Sogorea Te' <https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/> Indigenous
Land Trust, among other groups.
*Can I find a Sudo Room lease or other formal/informal document that
explains how much Sudo Room contributes/pays each month and for how much
usage of Omni Commons ? *
I think we (Sudo Room) contribute *$ 2000* each month to Omni Commons ?
If I can show a formal or informal lease to this group, they can utilize it
to see how the space is structured with the current groups/entities.
Dane
P.S.- I want to check on how I can get my Sudo Room wiki account
<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Welcome> approved ?

THIS WEEK’S THEME: THE WONDER OF PANORAMAS
- Sign up at https://lu.ma/z11o2ctd
Panoramas have enchanted people since the dawn of humankind, with people
painting 360 landscapes in caves to give the illusions of a “virtual
reality.” Panoramas have existed as theme park-style wonders back to
Shakespearan and Victorian times, allowing people to experience the wonder
of visiting far-off lands (When Thomas Cole Caught ‘Panoramania’ at the Met
<https://www.metmuseum.org/articles/thomas-cole-panorama>).
THE PANORAMA AT THE LASCAUX CAVE IN FRANCE
The theme for tonight’s SudoRoom will be panoramas in physical form through
paintings and a trip through time to see their use in children’s toys, on
light projections, tv screens and onward to modern augmented and virtual
reality!
Outside of that you can also do anything and everything! Solder, sew, and
more
HACK ON ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING <https://sudoroom.org/hardware-hack-night/>
○ *Projects:* can range from building course materials for teaching local
kids electronics to a robotic arm that draws, to light projection art, to
people building their own microchip boards! We provide the space, tools and
peer learning – you bring your project and enthusiasm!
*○ Group Sewing:* Learn to do simple mending or get help with technical
fabric and textile projects. In addition to regular machines our Sewing Lab
features heavy-duty industrial sewing machines and sergers. Our in house
sewing guru CC has worked for Academy or Art College, Tesla, SuitX, and
Zipline and has vast sewing machine repair and maintenance experience;
bring your own machine to tune up for tip-top operation and sew alongside
others.
*○ General Repair:* Fix it Clinic’s weekly Oakland residency: bring your
broken, non-functioning things – electronic gadgets, appliances, computers,
toys, sewing machines, fabric items, etc.– for assessment, disassembly, and
possible repair. We’ll provide workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to
help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item. First-time repairers and
“Fixing Families” are heartily invited. Learn more at

63/37 is great to work with! My fave, but 60/40 works well too.
I¹ll ask the folks at the radio museum; they might have a spare roll of
60/40.

lead free solder sucks! and we are pretty low on non-lead-free solder.
If anyone has extra rolls of regular lead solder (often labeled "rosin
core" or Pb 63) and you want to store it at sudoroom, it will help.
people new to solder often get frustrated when they don't realize they're
trying to use lead-free solder, which sucks. Also the flux is toxic
compared to the literal pine sap that's in regular solder.

An idea - 💡 why is SudoRoom unique in this place and time and history and how has it uniquely impacted you?
Thinking of a series of blog posts with people (we can use anonymous pseudonyms)
There is nothing like SudoRoom and no place on the world that is like Oakland. We are the most original city in the United States 🇺🇸
If we express that it will also segue nicely into the unique projects we’ve made. I don’t think our mix of Brains and creativity can be found in quite the same way on another hackerspace !
I have been adding sudoRoom events to the Decentered Arts list -
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1eX21lRIMOl3LLUhanRptk0jWbKoyZJV…
It's a great place, and there are artists hanging out and doing slide shows
of their art in people's homes. I think a missed opportunity that I could
have done better on is reaching out to people in the arts who need a place
to work and play.
Artist are natural hackers. We do have a large ballroom, ideal places for
weekly meetups of slides and artist stuff. And artists often build stuff
with robots and explore areas like agumetnd reality.
*We should always focus on what makes us special*
if we only focus on "hackers" and biotech we have stiff competition, as
Noisebridge is more well-funded and has more active nights (we love them
though)
Also, as Peter explained to me, UC Berkeley and Laney nowadays have
extremely clean and well-equipped makerspace labs, and of course stuff is
closer on campus.
Due to gentrification we have also lost a large contingent of cool happy go
lucky artsy mathematician and computer science types, and we're not in
downtown Oakland.
But the arts scene is pretty big in Oakland, and artists are hackers!
I could have done better on this!

HARDWARE HACK NIGHT! THEME: OCTAVIA BUTLER
OCTAVIA BUTLER IS OUR THEME ON THIS HARDWARE HACK NIGHT AS WE MIX AI, PRINT
MAGAZINES, AND MORE!
*This week’s theme:* Print is hardware too! And what better muse can we
imagine than *Octavia Butler,* science fiction Goddess.
We’ll have a pre-hardware hack night presentation on creative ways to mix
print with electronics, use artificial intelligence in the most open source
and ethical way, and work on our SudoRoom print zine! Throw in some 3D
models into the mix too!

hey friends!
I *just* found out about this, might be fun, might be good networking,
etc. (And networking is always a good way to make people aware of omni and
our needs!)

I'm in NW oakland (near berkeley) and would love to catch a ride with
others, also down to bart together, though i'm at a n berkeley potluck

When I get here was really nice what if people went in mass to eighth Street and then took the train back to Omnicom in the afternoon maybe on the weekend and modified the fines that they found there
