Let us be together,
Let us eat together,
Let us be vital together,
Let us be radiating truth,
radiating the light of life,
Never shall we denounce anyone,
never entertain negativity. -- The

With 8 hours left to go, some kind soul just topped us off and brought us

We expect to hit the target before midnight just from more
crowdfunding, Ed! If you really want to forgive some debt, we can
forward your email to the finance list, but it' s not necessary to
finish the crowdfunding campaign IMO :)
I know we have a couple of broken TVs in the sudoroom. Does anyone know
if they are solid waste or if they can be fixed?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWzPcDtZZZo
Anyway, I inherited a 32" "Dynex" LCD TV from a deceased friend that I
have no use for if we want to use that instead. It isn't great (720p),
but it works. Should I bring it in or would that just increase ambient
clutter? I think I have a wall mounting bracket for it if we want to
put it somewhere else.

Hello Sudoers!
As you may know, the Omni recently paid the State Farm insurance policies
for all collectives through June 2015. Because our lease requires that all
groups maintain current insurance policies, we decided to pay everyone's
insurance up front rather than risk incurring fines from John Givens due to
accidental lapses in individual policies.
Below is a link to an invoice for Sudo Room's State Farm insurance policy
through June 2015. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
If it would be helpful for you to pay the Omni in monthly installments,
that's fine too. Just let me know what you'd like to do.
Thanks so much!

*Watch Berkeley's free lecture series on fixing the world's broken food
systems*
/"Eating is, among other things, an ecological act."/
By Vlad Savov
Jan 28 2015
http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/28/7927077/berkeley-edible-education-lecture…
Some of the world's preeminent food policy thinkers and researchers are
taking part in a new Edible Education lecture series at UC Berkeley this
spring semester, and their lectures are being made available to stream
online. Starting this Monday with an introductory note from Michael
Pollan (video above, jump to the 9-minute mark to skip the preamble),
the series will be updated weekly with contributions from Marion Nestle,
Eric Schlosser, and Raj Patel. You can stream those live on the day
itself and participate in a Q&A on Twitter and Facebook, or you can just
pick up the video on YouTube later on.
The decisions made when setting food policy, argues Pollan, have broader
consequences than most of us imagine. "Eating is, among other things, an
ecological act," he says, before detailing some of the more devitalizing
impacts of high-volume agriculture on our environment and ecology. He
also echoes the words of New York Times writer Mark Bittman, another
participant in this Edible Education initiative, in asking for more
political attention to be granted to the centrality of food to so many
issues:
"These are all related: You can’t address climate change without
fixing agriculture, you can’t fix health without improving diet, you
can’t improve diet without addressing income, and so on. The production,
marketing and consumption of food is key to nearly everything."
The series will run all the way through the end of April, with the final
few lectures looking into ideas for a more sustainable food system that
can serve the planet's population without sapping its resources as
aggressively as the current one.
thanks Null (whoever that is) for bringing this up and suggesting good
pointers on how we should deal with such situations.
I agree with Patrik that it's important for someone to take a picture,
when someone makes enough of a problem that it takes multiple people to
deal with them, a photograph is essential for two reasons:
1. it allows us to share with each other the knowledge about a problem
person in case they come back (expecting no one will remember them)
2. it lets them know that we will not forget who they are, and that they
should forget about us and never come back.
I must stress that #2 is the most important aspect of this, because
ultimately our goal should be for problem people to go away and never come
back. Ideally they will tell their friends "don't bother, those people
are not the victims we believed them to be" or a paraphrase of that.
in particular, read the story of "Thief" from the noisebridge 86 wiki:
https://noisebridge.net/wiki/86
"This guy went into the back classroom and took Rayc's wallet out of his
backpack. Rayc saw him with the wallet in his hand and the guy tried to
say it was his. He then started running towards the door and was tackled
by Jake. We made him show us that nothing was in his pockets, and he kept
avoiding the big pocket in the front of his jacket. This pocket turned
out to have Sasha's smart phone. During the search his crack pipe fell
onto the floor and broke into many pieces. We let him go and told him
not to come back."
It took several people holding onto him to keep him from exiting down the
stairwell with people's property. He really wanted to leave but he did
not hit or strike anyone at any time, which is why we let him go after
searching him and getting the stolen items back.
When there is no photograph, it's basically impossible to prevent a person
from coming back whenever they want unless there is a person there who
will recognize them. We can't be playing cat and mouse with people who
want to take advantage of us.

Hey folks,
All day this Wednesday Jan 28th in Omni Commons, join the fundraising
working group starting at 12noon in making the final push to reach our goal

anyone interested in starting up again a regular hardware hack night? we've
had them in the past, but i don't think there are any regular meetups
focused on hardware right now. we have a cyberwizard who is interested in
pursuing hardware hacking and would be interested in a regular meetup.

I'm trying to arrange a talk and audio presentation in mid-Feb by David
Monacchi, a Professor of Electroacoustic Music at the Conservatory of
Pesaro, Italy who has spent years performing 3D audio recordings of the
rainforest.
Playback of these amazing recordings requires super-specialized rooms and
sound setups and the Audium <http://www.audium.org/index.html> in SF is
about the only place I can think might be able to do it.
I sent them an email but I'm hoping someone in our community might have a
way to contact them, since if this event is going to happen, its coming up
fast.
Does anybody know anybody at Audium?
David
I think I left it there when I was showing some comrades my new LED
projector: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2457122,00.as
Not much inside it, only a $13 slimport adapter for my Nexus 7, a HDMI
cable and an audio cable, but it would be a convenience to reclaim it if
possible.

I hope everyone won't mind this unsolicited zinetic outburst. I simply
cannot contain myself.
The second issue of my zine is now online at http://resistor.spaz.org!
<http://resistor.spaz.org>
Click the PDF directory. You will find reading & printing PDFs for both
issues of SF Resistor so far.
The second issue was actually finished just before Christmas as scheduled,
but it's taken me this long to figure out FTP for the first time & get the
files up without an internet-connectable laptop of my own.
If you are just reading the zine online, select the read.pdfs for each
issue.
SFR2 appears green because it's printed on green paper. I am heading north
in a couple months but plan to produce two more issues of SFR before
leaving. I'm already at work on the 3rd one. Each issue will be printed on
different color paper. Then I will collect the zine quadrilogy & dispense
copies to excellent people. That will happen in mid-March/early April.
Instructions for printing are on page 3 of SFR2, & will soon be up on the
site in a README file.
The site will be developed into a blog (ArcTangent (x) is the name) but is
just a seedling file tree a t m.
And for anyone who saw one of the crappy first-run print copies of SFR2,
the PDF file write snafu has been corrected (it turned out to be a simple
directory name error on my part) so I have print copies that look good &
are fully legible now. I'm bringing some to the OMNI bookstore this
weekend. (My second visit to the new Sudospace.)
I would like to help develop the SR zine & teach people how to make zines,
do layout both digitally & by hand, etc.
Also I am helping my friend, a person known to many, start a combination
printshop+cafe in the east bay soon. The need is definitely there. I've
been doing my printing at the public library & the print stations there are
always packed to the max. I've started giving impromptu tutoring sessions
to puzzled library patrons, since I often seem to know more about this
stuff than the staff.

Hello,
I wanted to tell you about a project called IndieBox: indieboxproject.org/
and to see if there was interest in having its creator come in for a talk
and demo. In fact, I'm pretty sure I initially heard of this thing on the
Sudoroom mailing list a while ago.
The goal is to create a box for consumers to easily be able to run their
own web apps locally on computers they physically control, so they truly
control their data.
The software component is a distribution based on Arch Linux called UBOS.
It easily manages web apps as packages, the same way most distros package
desktop apps. Did you ever consider how easy it is to install LibreOffice,
but how you can't really do that with WordPress and OwnCloud side by side?
You have to fiddle with database provision and Apache configs. Well, UBOS
handles all of that, as well as concurrent installations for multiple
users, upgrades and backups, and it even has a testing framework to make
sure upgrades work smoothly.
I've seen a couple presentations now at the Hacker Dojo by the guy running
the project, whose name is Johannes Ernst. I figured that there would be
more interest in a place like Sudo Room for a project like this. I have
been an occasional visitor to the Sudo Room, not sure if people remember
me. However, Johannes doesn't have any connections to Sudo Room, so he
asked if I could reach out to you folks to see if you were interested in
having him come in to do a presentation.
This may be of particular interest to the Mesh project people, since they
are working on local apps. I also told Johannes to check out PeoplesOpen.
So, I can post it in that group if people think it's more appropriate, to
try to make it part of a SudoMesh meeting. However I thought that the
general theme of independences from large companies would resonate would
the larger group, so I wanted to post it here first to see what people
thought.
-Dan

Free lockers available! They are the 1ft square lockers I've been looking
for; one set of 15 lockers, and one set of 20.
We just need to go pick them up near Sebastopol with a truck, and a few
people to help with the heavy lifting. Anyone (and a truck) available to
help out tomorrow?
I'd like to keep one for CCL, and put the other either in the basement or
in the storage room between the ballroom and the cafe, and put them up for
rent for member storage space.

Hi there-
I am interested in participating in some Sudo Room projects - particularly
Mesh, but perhaps others. My problem is I am mobility impaired in multiple
ways: a connective tissue disorder that causes artheriosclerosis,
arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, a tremor- I hope you get the picture that
though I don't use a wheelchair, even walking the few blocks from MacArthur
Bart is a trial for me. Also I'm extemely slow!
I was wondering if anyone drives from the Ashby Bart area of Berkeley and
might be willing to give me a ride? I tried volunteering via email but I
get the feeling "out of sight out of mind". Apart from my physical issues,
I'm quite capable and would like to find something interesting to do with
my skills.

We've got a lot of big items scheduled for next week's meeting, and it'd be
helpful to start talking about them now so that the meeting itself can be
as fruitful as possible without stretching on into midnight. One of the
bigger items is the "Stealing Shit Policy," which would outline an
appropriate response to theft in the space. It might be worth extending
this into something more like the "Confrontation Response Policy," so that
it could address other situations in which someone is threatening the space
or its membership, whether they're drunkenly destroying items or verbally
accosting people.
I spoke with several people about how we could deal with these situations
without calling the police or violating our safe space agreements
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Safe_space>. Most of us were at a loss, but
Ryan had some good initial suggestions. I've outlined them below as best I
recall:
- If someone is trying to leave the space with a stolen item, call all
hands on deck and block the entrances until they've relinquished it.
- If someone is harassing people or damaging the space, ask them to
leave. If they refuse to leave, then call all hands on deck and form a
human net around them. Without touching them, guide them out the door.
- Only if someone is physically violent do we respond with physical
force.
These responses would be absolute last resorts, and hopefully we would
never need to employ them. Still, even if we tighten down our entrance
policies, we should be ready to respond to people who are abusing the space
and its membership. This way, we'll be prepared to respond in a way that's
aligned with our values.
Are there other ideas about how to deal with these types of situations?
I've reached out to some radical spaces back in Austin to see how they
would respond. If there are other spaces in town that might have some
perspective or techniques, it'd be great to hear from them too.

Subject: [sfchalkboard] Looking for Wordpress Developer interested in
taking over several websites
To: sfchalkboard(a)lists.riseup.net
Hello Chalkboard,
I'm a web designer/Wordpress developer, and I'm seeking another such person
who is skilled, personable, and interested in taking on a handful of
already-built websites to perform periodic updates and/or maintenance as
needed, for some of the lovely clients I've maintained over the years.
I've gotten a new job and am no longer able to maintain and update these
sites, and would like to pass them along to a developer I have confidence
in.
I also get fairly regular requests for new jobs, large and small, and I'd
be keen to pass them along to the right person as well.
Most of the websites I regularly maintain are on Wordpress, besides a few
outliers. I'm seeking someone versed in Wordpress who also has a working
knowledge of HTML, CSS, and PHP.
Here are the websites, in order of frequency of updates:
shantiyogamontana.comcollege-prep.orgtheblueeyedgirl.comthecoldlineproject.comsfdancefilmfest.org
I've charged between $35-50/hr for these clients, but of course you could
charge whatever you see fit.
If interested, please contact me!

I am supposed to be sailing on Saturday leaving around 10, but I like this and would like to help... I could be around in the early evening to help. You can text me 401 451 7150, if we get enough other people together. Its Friday pm right now, I could potentially help move it tonight... Is anybody else interested in this?

I hope everyone won't mind this unsolicited zinetic outburst. I simply
cannot contain myself.
?The second issue of my zine is now online at http://resistor.spaz.org!
<http://resistor.spaz.org>
And for anyone who saw one of the crappy first-run print copies of SFR2,
the PDF file write snafu has been corrected (it turned out to be a simple
directory name error on my part) so I have print copies? that look good &
are fully legible now.

Hello Guys,
Do we have a thicker kapton tape for 3D printer printing bed? Something
like >5" to cover the entire print bed with one shot.
If we don't, would anyone be welling to pitch in with me for something like
this
<http://www.amazon.com/Mil-Kapton-Tape-Polyimide-yds/dp/B00CU3TB6O/ref=sr_1_…>?
I really don't need 36 yard of kapton tape in my life time.
Thanks

These last few weeks, we've been getting a lot of people for newbie night.
It's a great way to introduce folks to the space, though the way I've been
conducting the night, it's mostly just been an architectural tour. This is
the ballroom, this is the community printing press, this is where the
dumpstered croissants live. Unfortunately, this only prepares people to
navigate the space; not to be excellent sudoers. So I want to open this up
and ask, what else should newbie night cover?
Some important ones:
- our values
- our history
- our safe space agreements
Is there anything else we feel should be added?

I love these ideas. They imply a radically different way of thanking
than the status quo outside our walls, where people tend to only care
about themselves and think "other peoples' problems are not my
problems". Which is GREAT but also raises the ante for all of us. I
think this is one of the most important things we should be getting
across when acculturating new people to our space - sharing isn't just
about software and tools. We share responsibility for the space and
for each other.
Today a person who is suspected of having stolen something from Adam on
January 3rd at 3:40PM was in the space. I had talked with Adam about it
before, and I knew the story.
Adam pointed out that the person was back. He was at the table in
sudoroom using his computer. I gathered some people and we asked this
person to leave until or unless they come back to a meeting, which we
explained is at 7PM on wednesdays.
I'm not sure if this discuss list is the venue for listing reasons to
believe this person stole something, and i'm not naming them here at this
point. This person said they do not know yet if they will attend the
meeting.
They said they would contact me via IRC if they plan to attend the
meeting. If they do so, I will let everyone know so we can meet up and
talk about it.
thank you

Hey guys,
Real quick - Margot Prado, tireless Maker & city planner, is organizing an
Oakland Makers tour as a proposal for a Mobile Workshop on October 3-5 for
the California American Planning Association conference to be held in
Oakland. The tour would also include American Steel, the Crucible, NIMBY,
Moxy, Blue Sprout, and 25th St Collective. I am going to say yea to this
unless anyone objects?
Best,
David
Hiya folks,
Art in North Berkeley (cc'd here) is offering a really in-tune full upright
piano. The key action is totally solid (full spring back on every key).
He has a truck to transport the piano in but we need to provide the
muscle. I figure we would need at least 4 strong (and tall doesn't hurt)
people to move this thing.
It's kind of an amazing piano in that is used to be a player piano that was
controlled via a bellows system and air tubes. I view this kind of piano
as being imminently (and very interestingly) hackable in a way that very
few pianos are and I really really think we should bring it into Omni! I
made a short video of this piano here:
http://youtu.be/AaFc4yRctZQ
Demonstrating some of the unusual portals and controls that can be used on
this piano.
Art lives in N. Berkeley closeish to the N. Berkeley Bart so some of us to
help to move this piano by barting then walking to his house.
He would like to try and move this tomorrow or saturday. Also there is a
very large bookshelf (or storage shelf) that we will likely want to grab
for sudo or CCL.

it works. it's hooked up to the desktop computer in the southeast corner,

Thriving by what standards? Sudoroom's values go against many of the
dominant trends in hackerspaces, so in this and many other cases we
might find ourselves making our own way. :)
That said, I support having a lockable door. It's not about being
strict, it's about having options. Members who are in the space should
have the choice to decide whether they want to do the heavy lifting of
holding a radically open space, or whether they just don't have the
spoons for it. I think this is a great balance between all of our
community's needs and values. I think most of the day we'll find
ourselves in the former situation. And it's not that radical a change
for Sudoroom, it's pretty much exactly how things were during our
formative years at 2141 - the door could be (and often was) locked at
any time.
Hey Sudo!
Yet another session of the excellent Coursera Crypto course has started as
of today! [0] If you are interested in learning more about cryptography,
this is a great place to start.
Additionally, I and some others are interested in starting a weekly study
group to discuss the course material and help each other with the
assignments. We were thinking Sudo Room would be a good place to host it!
So this email is meant to:
1. Gauge interest in such a study group from the sudo community
2. Make sure it's ok to host something like this at Sudo
Is there anything we should do to host this at sudo in the most positive
way possible for the space and community?
Cheers,
Garrett

Yes please! I would love to help with this. I could drive some muscle
over there in my car as well.
Would we put this in the ballroom? The existing ballroom piano is
getting really sad and out of tune, I think because it keeps being
moved around. I would love to know any ideas people have for keeping
the pianos open-access and reconfigurable, but also not a total
maintenance nightmare.
Also, I would really like to fix the existing one but don't know where
to start. If anybody out there knows how to fix and tune pianos, and
would like to exchange knowledge or learn alongside me, please let me
know! :D

We can set up a sasl/pop/imap if you're ok connecting from a local

nobody's made it a priority yet.

I'd be comfortable with this as long as we can still have the doors
propped open most of the day, or whenever members feel comfortable
doing so.

Coming to the conclusion that sudoers should actively try and keep a better
awareness of their surroundings, including CCL. I know I often let CCL just
be at the boundary of my awareness and have no idea who's in the space,
although it would be easy for me to know.

What does it mean to forge a commons?
Everywhere on the planet, those spaces, places, and resources that we share
and hold in common are being targeted and exploited for personal gain and
corporate profit. It is up to all of us to preserve whatever commons we
still have, and to forge new ones whenever possible.
The Omni Commons has tremendous potential to become a critical community
space. In order to ensure our doors can open, and remain open, we need
your help today.

Sudoroom has many long-standing policies for this. First, any Sudoroom
member is empowered to ask a non-member to leave at any time. Second,
when a person's presence makes someone else feel unsafe, we ask them
to leave and not return until the end of a conflict resolution process
(if they want one). The process involves a mediator and steward having
private meetings and then reporting back afterwards. Facts and
arguments are not hashed out at a public meeting unless the process
has failed spectacularly. We've never had to do that.
Sudoroom values fairness, but we have always prioritized safety over fairness.
WRT Elliot, I haven't been around enough lately to know, but it sounds
like we've kicked out many strangers for less and never thought twice.
It's so much easier to be lenient with a familiar face, but that's not
"fair"...

There’s only one week left to contribute to our crowdfunding campaign, and
we’re really close to reaching our goal. Please donate now, and share this
message as far as you possibly can!

We only need another $12,855! Thanks to the generosity of our community,
we’ve received $40,000 in major donations plus $27,145 in grassroots
funding through our crowdfunding campaign page. That means, together, we’ve
raised $67,145--approaching our overall goal of $80,000.
