My friend Hilary, in Oakland, is looking for donations of OLPCs for a school in Tanzania. If you can help, please see below:
WANTED: OLPC XO-1 laptops. These machines were introduced through a
”Give One Get One” offer by One Laptop Per Child <www.laptop.org> a
few years ago. Please check your closets to find these wonderful
learning tools now hiding there. The XO is a potent learning tool
designed and built especially for children in developing countries,
especially those living in some of the most remote environments. It’s
about the size of a small textbook. It has built-in wireless and a
unique screen that is readable under direct sunlight for children who
go to school outdoors. It’s extremely durable, brilliantly functional,
energy-efficient, and fun. We are collecting these laptops for a new
school in a rural area of Tanzania
<http://www.aiscs.org/projects.php>. If you have no further need for
your machine, please contact AISCS info(a)aiscs.org or call us:
510-273-9044 to donate it, even if you are not sure it still works.
Thanks,
Mitch.

They are a distributed online group. The project mainly exists as:

I'm giving my very popular *Arduino For Total Newbies* workshop at Noisebridge!
Saturday, 9-August, 1:00pm to 4:30pm
You've probably heard lots about Arduino. But if you don't know what it is, or how you can use it to do all sorts of cool things, then this fun and easy workshop is for you. As an example project, we'll be creating a TV-B-Gone remote control out of an Arduino you can take home with you.
All ages, all welcome!

I guess there's a huge pile of doors in sudoroom, with a note that says
"keep at least 25 of them here" or something.
does "here" mean sudoroom? or can i move them downstairs into the library
or something? I want to put the robot where they are.

Yes! I really hope that the Sudo community can put our weight behind
this project. It is an extremely important one, and has AMAZING
potential.
I'm planning to rent a Hard Surface Cleaner from Home Depot this evening
(If I can figure out how to transport it), to clean the concrete floor in
CCL:
http://www6.homedepot.com/tool-truck-rental/Hard_Surface_Cleaner/L08992029/
Only $48/day, plus cleaning solution! I'm planning on renting it for a full
day, so once we're done with the CCL floor, Sudo, BackSpace or FNB might
want to borrow it to clean their concrete floors as well. Much easier than
wet-mopping...
Is there anyone who can help me get this thing from Home Depot in Oakland,
between 6 and 7 this evening?

Hey everyone,
I hope this wont seem weird to formally announce this, but I decided
tonight that if I am gonna attend any meeting, I am going to attend the
whole meeting all the way through to its initially-slated /
official ending-time, or I will just not attend. I decided it is just too
disrespectful to others to hop in and out of meetings before they are
slated to be finished, even if it is for other, equally pressing omni
business (which has, in every case I can think of, been the only reason I
have ever felt compelled to do so.)
Therefore I respectfully ask anyone that feels I personally need to step
away to attend to something else or answer a query, or even wants a quick
sidebar on somethin at a given merting, simply not ask but wait until the
meeting is done - barring of course some sort of all-out emergency.
By the same token, if a meeting runs over its running time, I may have
to leave that meeting at some point thereafter - and I sincerely hope that
no one at that extended meeting will be offended if I do so at that point -
I encourage others to try this model with me, which I probably should have
been following all along. Honestly, I am really not the best multitasker in
the world (as I am sure this is already readily apparent to everyone
anyhow), so I dont know why I tried to attempt otherwise.
I hope this doesn't seem narcissistic or anything to announce publicly - as
if its sooo important somehow - but I just want to make sure moving
forward, that no one is offended if I have to defer talking to em (or
otherwise engage with another matter) right away whilst I am still in a
meeting, or have to leave a meeting that is running over.
Love to all,
David
Hello!
I have been thinking about making some legs for turning those hollow core
doors into tables when needed.
I came across this recently: *http://www.thefloydleg.com/story-of-the-leg/
<http://www.thefloydleg.com/story-of-the-leg/>* and thought.. we could make
something like that!!
I only have some rudimentary soldering skills, but I'd really like to learn
more heavy duty welding / metallurgy. Anyone here have experience with that
at all?
Anyone interested in working on a project like this with me? Not
necessarily tomorrow, but in the not-too-distant future?

tomorrow!
To: omnilogistics

Thanks to everybody who helped load the truck tonight with all the Omni
detritus! And extra thanks to David K (who spent hours literally
demolishing the heavy wooden furniture) and Rikke (who brought her box
truck and coordinated, somehow, everything fitting perfectly like a game of
box truck tetris).
But! We need to make the dump run _tomorrow morning_ as Rikke and JC have
prior obligations to help with the Noisebridge Reboot [1] and need the
truck empty by noon! We will be meeting at 7am outside of the Omni with an
extra vehicle for a few folks who can help us unload the truck at the dump.
Or you can meet us at the commercial waste dump, which is 3 blocks from the
Coliseum BART stop.
If you can meet at this time (7am tomorrow/today), please contact me before
6:30am. We'll be checking with the dump at 6am to ensure they will allow an
un-dumping vehicle to enter the premises, or if they will voluntarily help
with unloading.

Can anyone at Omni block off the loading zone and the space behind it for
the truck that's coming to remove the debris situation outside Omni on 48th?
Can I also get all available hands to help load the truck up from at least
8pm on tonight? I know the OOC meeting will probably run late, but we need
some bodies to help load up that truck. If we do not load up the truck, we
risk getting cited for obstruction and that could be several hundred
dollars at this point considering the amount of stuffs.
I've arranged with J.C. & Ricky to bring their box truck to Omni in a
couple hours so we can do a dump run. They will have to be remunerated. I
don't know what it will be but it should be under $600 total. John had
scheduled with Waste Management for bulky pickup (which was also going to
be expensive due to the amount and type of stuff) but they flaked for 2
days, then said they can't take ceiling tiles, or broken-up furniture, or
actually pretty much anything we have out there, so it will have to be
hauled. Other options like a dumpster was explored but this was really
expensive and we would not get it for days (at least $750 + cost of parking
obstruction permit from city = over ~$1000). I don't anticipate the cost of
hauling exceeding $600 but this will have to be assessed by Ricky, JC et al
with the truck.
Note the cost of disposal will mostly be on john but partly on OOC. That's
because John doesn't think he should have to pay for e.g. the disposal of
the ceiling tiles from the bookstore-cafe (that collective should pay for
that), or actually, the extra 3 big wardrobes removed from CCL/Sudo room,
or of our garbage that we did not put out on Tuesday, etc. The exact
portion we are responsible for needs to be negotiated a bit with John (I
don't think this will not be a big deal), but re: the wardrobes for
example, as John expressed, since Sudo took 3 of them and we are keeping
one in the ballroom (4 total), we are also responsible for the other 3 we
don't need - it was a take them all or take none sort of deal (yar can
perhaps speak better to this). So who is responsible for what on our side
will need to be sorted out, I figure our responsibility is about 30%. We
had probably 7-8 bags of garbage and many, many bags of ceiling tiles, the
wardrobes were big and heavy, etc.

Hey sudoers,
Here's the tl;dr version of tonight's meeting. Thanks for everyone who
showed up, paid attention and participated. We had a lot to wade through!
* OMNI ACCESS: More caution around access to the Omni during these
transitionary summer months is needed. If you open the door for
someone, make sure you either know they're a member, or if they're a
guest, take accountability for them. Give tours. Perhaps end the tour
back at the door if you feel that's wise.
** Suggestions to the issue of access included signage both outside
the door (that we're not yet open to the public) and inside (process
for dealing with visitors); designated 'open hours' or a 'Newbie
Night' with designated greeters; clarification/accessibility of
membership list, otherwise non-members should be sponsored by a member
or leave.
* CONSENSUS WROUGHT: Sudo Room agrees to pay into Omni's standing
funds for July (we would otherwise not have had to pay rent for July,
but decided to contribute to the Omni Collective's near-term
resilience and operating expenses. (10 unanimous yays)
* CONSENSUS WROUGHT: Sudo Room agrees that the Omni should pay our
lawyer ($816), though the larger bill's invoice should be documented
transparently prior to consensus. (10 unanimous yays)
* OMNI VOTING PROCEDURE PROPOSAL: A general sense expressed that the
current proposal is overly simplistic and dangerously susceptible to
manipulation by interested parties who block a vote to turn it toward
majority rule. Suggestion that the Omni delineate the kinds of
decisions it makes and how to go about voting for them (for example,
Sudo Room's process calls for a 2/3 majority vote in conflict
resolution procedures, full consensus for changes to our Articles, etc;)
* CONSENSUS PROPOSAL: "If the Omni Oakland Collective or any of its
member collectives bans a person from its space for reasons of
safety, that person is immediately and automatically banned from
Sudoroom."
(10 unanimous yays by 8 members and 2 provisional members)
* NEW MEMBERS:
** Liz finally voted in after 2 weeks without quorum! hooray!!
** Whitney: Civil engineer, working on a public art piece, working
with electronics, want to learn, contribute, share tools; working on a
property access gate and wants to learn more about hardware and
wiring. Daniel says Whitney has shown his interest in Sudo.
** Torrie Fischer: Ohioan, started Synhack hackerspace. Came to Bay
Area and was inspired by Noisebridge to start Synhack. C, python,
linux, machinist, construction; helping w/ noisebridge reboot; wants
to participate in a variety of communities. Torrie helped a member
with soldering.
** TJ Mosely: Electrical engineer, nuclear engineering. Interested in
power systems, embedded systems. Based in Oak / San Leandro, etc;
wants to build a doggie treadmill. TJ volunteered today for hours on
Omni construction.
* CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Accusation that Phil is complicit with state
surveillance. This is not necessarily a two-party situation, as Daniel
is speaking for the safety and livelihood of others. Call for solidarity.
** Conflict Steward: Whitney
** Mediator: Hol

Yeah, and the Oakland Privacy Working Group seems to be meeting at Impact Hub.
I think it's partly the disruption of the move, and partly the
location. 2141 was more centrally located in the city.
We should accept that some groups will decide other places are better
for them, and find the new groups that do want to meet at our new
space. There will be a lot of them!

i have visited two hackerspaces here in Toronto, including
http://hacklabs.to
and
http://torontotoollibrary.com
and it's clear that a hackerspace needs a laser cutter. Sudoroom doesn't
have one yet, so we should start thinking about which one we will get.
I heard we had $12,000.00 too much in the bank, and here at TTL they have
a HUGE laser cutter called the Lasersaur. It's a kit, sortof, but it's a
very serious machine. It uses a 100 watt laser! and that means it can
cut through 3/4" plywood (in multiple passes)
http://www.lasersaur.com/
okay maybe we're not ready for something like this quite yet, but when
we're ready we should keep it in mind. We can skip over the step of
getting a cheap lame cutter like those other hackerspaces.
speaking of other hackerspaces, hacklabs has one from Universal Laser
Systems that they got off Craigslist for $500 because the controller was
fried. They built a motor control system (the hard way) and then they had
a nice laser cutter! I think it's 25 watts.

Hello Sudoroomers. I spoke to some of you in person and they recommended i
use the listserv to speak to more of you at once. I am *NOT* a member of
the listserv so if you respond to my message *please* email me off list at
thegayscience(a)gmail.com.
I'm looking for someone with an interest in and operant knowledge of
robotics who can help me build an unguided, fast-moving robotic filing
cabinet on wheels. My intention is to battle it with a hammer, naked, in a
crowded room. I intend to get injured, but not as injured as the filing
cabinet.
I am looking for someone who can help me create this-not someone who
can provide guidance or advice. I'm afraid the learning curve is just too
steep for me, and i'm too busy, between working full time, participating in
the growth of Omnispace and developing a (seperate, unrelated) dance
project.
I would provide all the necessary materials.
The filing cabinet would have to move fast enough to hurt me, but not
fast enough to *really* hurt me. It must be unguided because its necessary
that 1. i am battling it and not a human user somewhere and 2. It must have
the potential to injure my audience as well. It must have a minimum of
three axes of movement. Other than that the sky is the limit.
I'm willing to discuss compensation, that is money, for your help.
If i have piqued your interest, email me back and we can meet (i'm at
omni space often) and i can provide more details/rationale if you need
that.
Thanks!

Hi friends!
At last night's Omni governance meeting [0], we talked at length about
the current status of our working groups and how to go about
encouraging work to get done principally in these working groups. We
identified some issues, such as the same people bottom-lining and
participating in all of the working groups. In short, we need fresh
leadership!
Working groups should also be encouraged to work as they see fit -
which oftentimes is _not_ yet another weekly meeting, but perhaps a
bi-weekly work party, monthly hackathon, or mostly virtual collaboration.
Current working groups and bottom-liners as per the wiki:
1. Communication - Elaine and Jenny (requesting new bottom-liner) [1]
2. Challenging Dominant Culture - Kazoo & Margit (new bottom-liner[s]
needed) [2]
3. Legal & Governance - Niki [3]
4. Finances - Danny (has this group met?)
'Space Ops' never really got started, and there was a proposal to
replace this instead with two new groups in need of bottom-liners:
5. Building Maintenance - biweekly Tuesday work parties [4]
6. Common Space Coordinating
What follows are guidelines for working group functionality, also
posted on the wiki [5]:
_Working Group Protocols_
In order to make progress on many different aspects of this project,
please use the following protocols. The intention is to support
horizontal, consent-based, transparent, good-faith collaboration.
1. Start a Working Group
* Create Working Group wiki page and link to it here:
http://wiki.omni-oakland.org/w/Working_Groups
* Articulate "mission" or purpose, goals, and any tasks you already know.
* Schedule regular meetings and add them to the Calendar:
http://wiki.omni-oakland.org/w/Calendar
* Announce upcoming meetings on the omni-announce list at least 24
hours prior to meeting: omni-announce(a)lists.riseup.net
2. Hold Working Group Meetings
* Before the meeting begins, designate a facilitator and a scribe to
take notes
* Conclude the meeting with Outcomes or Action Items and schedule next
meeting
* Post meeting notes to the wiki on the Event page (making it
discoverable through the calendar)
* Prepare report-back for weekly Omni Collective meeting.
3. Join a Working Group
* Check the Calendar [5] and attend the next meeting of the working group.
* Directly contact the individual(s) bottom-lining the group.
* Show up to a meeting, or use the communication channel specified for
that group to stay in touch.
4. Make Progress in a Working Group
* Set goals that aspire to deliver on the working group's "mission" or
purpose.
* If necessary, outline tasks in order to reach each goal.
* Make progress on and seek to accomplish any tasks that contribute to
the working group's goals.
* When a working group's goals require feedback, formal approval, or
simply consent from the Omni Collective, create a proposal:
** Present this proposal to the Omni Collective delegates meeting to
ensure each member-group can build consent in their respective
community as necessary.
* When a working group has several divergent options or ideas and
cannot come to resolution on them alone, then create proposals that
represent these options and present these in some way to the whole
collective:
** Present proposals at an Omni Collective meeting for feedback
** Ask for feedback on the omnilogistics(a)lists.riseup.net email list
** Ask for feedback from other working groups, member-groups, or
individuals that are not involved with your working group.
** Rinse, repeat until you have garnered improvements to your proposal
from the invaluable experiences and contributions of everyone involved
with the omni collective, ultimately building consensus among the
entire collective.

Marc and I did some spot checks for lead in the paint on the CCL side of
the Bocce ball court, including some of the heavily peeling parts on the
North and East wall, and some specks we managed to knock off the ceiling
with a tennis ball.
*No lead in any of the 6 different samples we checked!* Yay! Highly
surprising for a building this age...
We used Lead Check swabs
<https://www.google.com/search?q=lead+check&tbm=shop> by 3M - you should be
able to find them at most paint stores and home improvement stores for
around $10 for two swabs. You might want to get some to test other spaces,
and we may still want to get an official lead inspection at some point. But
so far, this does look very promising...
We also poured two plates to test for mold. Again, around $10 per kit
<https://www.google.com/search?q=pro-lab+mold+test+kit&tbm=shop>, but you
need to pay an extra $40 if you want a lab to identify the specific mold
species. We'll let you know what we find...

There were reports of silverfish in the bocce ball court. I have no idea if
anyone tried to address it, but it sounds like they did.
I would put this to sudo-discuss -

Hey sudo!
At Thursday night's Omni delegates meeting, the following proposals were
put forth and are up for discussion over the next week, to be voted on
at next Thursday's Omni meeting:
1. Paying Jesse
Jesse Palmer is the Omni's lawyer and has done a phenomenal job
helping us get to where we are now. His bill totals somewhere in the
realm of $8500, which divided among 10 collectives means Sudo would
contribute ~$850.
2. Paying an additional month of rent into a reserve
Our rent for July is free, but all collectives could pay rent for the
month of July anyway to be put into a reserve fund. I think this is a
great idea, and we have the funds for it (I believe we have ~$12,000
in the bank).
3. Revision to Consensus Process:
Thus far, the Omni Collective has made decisions using a full
consensus model. The proposal on the table is for votes to strive for
full consensus, but resort to a 2/3 majority vote if consensus cannot
be achieved. This model was recommended by Jesse, who has extensive
experience representing coops and collectives who've run into problems
with full-consensus models for hairy decisions like banning an abusive
individual or - as may be the case with us - removing particular
groups/collectives from the larger collective.
Proposal : New Voting Model
All votes called by the Delegate Council are subject to two rounds of
voting. The first round passes by full consensus. If after friendly
amendments and conversation full consensus cannot be achieved, the
vote moves to a second round which passes by 2/3 majority. If this
second vote fails to pass, the vote does not carry.
This amendment to our full consensus voting procedures is proposed in
light of advice from radical comrades and colleagues who have seen
groups and projects torn apart by bad-faith exploitation of full
consensus voting. Our group's aim and aspiration will always be full
consensus, and we will always work to make sure all voices are heard.
In all of our work and decisionmaking together, let us always be
guided by fairness, kindness, and justice.
----
Please discuss any issues posed by the above proposals, make
amendments, and feel free to attend next Thursday's meeting if you'd
like to participate!
Cheers,
Jenny

Looking for your hand made way cool things!
To make our Noisebridge IndieGoGo campaign more appealing and awesome for higher level donations, we're adding two more reward levels:
$256 -- One ultra way cool handmade thing by a Noisebridge community member. We can't tell you what it will be -- you'll find out when you receive it. We guarantee that it will be handmade, and that its creator made it because they wanted to make a way ultra cool thing!
$512 -- Two ultra way cool handmade things by Noisebridge community members. We can't tell you what they will be -- you'll find out when you receive them. We guarantee that they will be handmade, and that their creators made them because they wanted to make way ultra cool things!
Wanna donate a Cool Handmade Thing for the cause? Please email me! It can be anything! Simple, easy, complex -- it doesn't matter -- as long as it is hand made, and you think it is way cool. Blinky lights, vibrating pillow, a scarf, a science project, a hand crank automata, a photo, painting, toothpick sculpture, an mp3, . . . Anything at all - - as long as it is hand made, and you think it is way cool. You have till October 1st to complete it and get it to Noisebridge.
Please email me if you can help.
Thanks!
Mitch.
Hey Sudo Room,
Noisebridge is holding a Class-a-Thon between August 9th and August 15th.
All we need are awesome and talented folks like yourselves to teach a few
classes!
You can do a one-off class you've been meaning to try for a while, or a
tried-and-true stand-by you've been teaching forever, or even a discussion
group or workshop.
This is the week leading up to our Reboot Party, so it's sure to come with
lots of excitement and fresh energy.
See below emails for details!
Cheers,
Naomi

Awesomeness: Thanks David K, David ?, Jeremy, and Sally for your help.
That was a lot of stuff!!
The area got 96% cleared up. We moved the 2 Two Posts Racks, and the
improvised server cart holding three two Servers and a Dell Desktop.
If someone could clear up the rest of the stuff would super! What is
left? A black big cabinet, and miscellaneous stuff left on and around
the shelf.
Many Thanks!
p.s. staged-photo ;) hehe
Hello All,
Just we all know:
DONATION RECEIVED:
We have received a donation of 2 Two Post Racks. Thanks Chris!! The
donation easily saved us about 400 dollars. We only needed one for
production, but Jeremy and I already have discussed how we can use the
second one (training for those who would like to learn how to reset
passwords, erase config files, and or do OS upgrade on the spare Cisco
Switches that we have. :) -Oh yeah... we couldn't wait and installed a
couple of switches on one of the racks! :)
SCREWS AND CAGE NUTS:
Anyhow: for those that know how messy can get with having the wrong kind
of screws and cage nuts: We have narrow it down to have the donated
racks tread as a model to use for the Server Rack square holes. So when
we trying to install a switch or rack mount server/device we won't go
bunkers trying to figure out what screws should be use. The screws we
are using are 12-24.
SERVER RACK STATUS:
And talking about the Server Rack.... Last Friday I checked with the
Vendor and I am glad I did.
There was some wrong info in the billing part of the order, it did get
corrected then. So now that detail got cleared up, the estimate shipping
date is August 16. Yes, until then since this is a back-order.
Thanks!
Daniel
In the morning at&t was at the omni, they were chopping the tree across
the street and preparing the phone line for sonic. They eventually
installed two panels with lines going to the landlord and us. The line
to us was marked as *sonic cir 319* and *sonic cir 320*, but nothing was
setup.
Then we wired it and... we have internet!
SERVER ROOM UPDATE JULY 21, 2014
Hello all,
We finally concluded that the small stage that oversees the Sudoroom is
where we'll put the Server Room. Yes, the area behind the SudoRoom sign.
This particular area is full of wood and other stuff that needs to move,
so if you feel helping on this part of Sudo Reboot, please do.
If you have any questions or need more info on how to help please check
with Marc, David, Daniel, or Jeremy.
Thank you!
Hey all,
I know I'm probably being an idiot, but looking at all the floor plans and
detail drawings, for the life of me I cannot figure out the building or
room heights.. ie for sudo/ccl room, ballroom, etc.
Can some enterprising engineeringly-minded soul help us figure that out as
soon as..?

David
what are sudoer's thoughts on scissor lifts, rental vs. purchase..?

Hi all.. um -
Thinking about all we have to do and talking with contractors -
I think we will either have to rent or, maybe, purchase a used scissor lift
for all we have to do.
Looks we can rent for ~400-$700/mo, or buy one for ~$4500-$6000.
Advantage of buying one use is obviously, we keep it as long as we need and
when we are done (if nothing breaks) we just sell it for about what we
bought it for, which will be cheaper than renting.
We have these 'get up high' tasks - some necessary, some potentially
necessary:
Ballroom:
- Ceiling tiles: these are falling off/down, some water damaged - fix,
remove or replace
- Soundproofing (as per a studio engineer I took through the place):
Pexiglass or similar under the skylights, and some sort of
closeable/openable cover for the 2 large pull fans (ie large openings from
which most of the sound escapes into the neighborhood). This will be
necessary for any future cabaret license.. and we need to start renting
that ballroom.
Barroom:
- Ceiling tiles & florescents: remove
- New ceiling lighting & eletrical conduit: install
Sudo/CCL room:
- Pull fans to install in skylight vents
- peeling paint & superficial damage to fix in ceiling (as per CCL's need
for cleanliness)
Exterior:
- Siding on south wall: fix up and/or or replace damaged / rotting boards
before rainy season (Landlord may pay for some of this)
Potentially necessary everywhere:
- SPRINKLERS aaaaaaahhhhh - this will make it far less expensive / scary an
investment. If we bought a used lift, we could start installing it room by
room and take our time.
- Fixing any elctrical, gas or plumbing pipe high up that is hard to reach
An added possible benefit marc brought up - if we kept it - this would aid
greatly in Mesh installs around oakland.. maybe mesh could help out with
the purchase, and it could be taken on field trips..? Mesh - what say you..?
Best,
David
Extension 1 for sales, tech is Keshon - if anyone needs to communicate with
them
They were let in finally by John thank goodness - It would still be good if
someone was there - the tech needs to try to improve the bandwidth. If
someone could roll over and assist the tech, that would be good?
- I did confirm that at least on paper we are connected to the close C.O.
(~1.1K ft away), so we should be getting close to the provisioned bandwidth
of 100Mb down / 20Mb up, instead of 20/1.5 as we are currently getting
- Tech should be told to try the Tace 5168 Sonic is providing so our Zyxel
modem is not blamed / the culprit
- Sonic's Tace modem should be hooked up right at the MPOE (in the utility
room) to remove any variables possibly related to faulty inside wiring
- Tech should probably be told to look for undocumented bridge taps (i.e.
at the nearest b-box outside) to see what may be dragging down the bandwidth
Best,
David

Hi Sudo folk,
I know there are some wiki people out there -- wanted to remind you of this
(free) event tomorrow. We'll be working on Wikipedia articles about open
education, and similar topics. Please join if you can -- and if you sign up
tonight, we've got your lunch covered :) It should be a great way to flex
your wiki writing muscles, and meet people interested in hacking education.
We'll have online participants joining us from all over, as well! But join
us in person at the Impact Hub, on 23rd and Broadway.

Hi all,
Just a heads-up that between now and Friday, the landlord will be sending
in some movers to take out all the desks and other crap that he left behind
in the Counter Culture Labs side of the hall. (Not sure if the big pile of
doors in Sudo should be moved out at the same time?)
I know that some Sudo gear keeps migrating into CCL's space, but I would
strongly recommend that you keep your gear well away from the stuff in our
side that needs to get moved out, or at the very minimum keep it clearly
labeled, so the movers don't accidentally toss it out as well.
After all of John's stuff is gone, we will likely want to clear most
everything else out of CCL and do some serious cleaning, painting, and
floor sealing, so we can actually start turning the place into the citizen
science laboratory it's supposed to be. If you have any chemical
sensitivities, or suggestions for what types of products to use (or not to
use), now would be a good time to speak up...
Looking forward to hack some science with y'all!
Patrik
I think there are two things we should do to augment our safe space logistics
1) We should adopt a code of conduct for Sudoroom and all events that
we sponsor. I think we should look at the Geek Feminism CoC:
http://geekfeminism.org/about/code-of-conduct/ Please read it through
if you have the time.
2) We should agree to honor all bans on people by other groups and
spaces at the Omni, AND by the Omni itself. The Omni hasn't yet
required this of groups, and doesn't yet have its own structures in
place for banning people from the common areas, but we can still be
proactive until that happens, and I think doing so would show good
faith to our Omni community and help convince everyone this is a Good
Thing.
thanks,
Remote Yar
My crony Gerald & I picked up about 15 'puters from Youth Radio
<https://youthradio.org/> today, and brought them to the sudoroom. We
also grabbed about 7 monitors and a bag full of cables. These boxen
look pretty sweet, dual core, Windows 8, 4 GB of RAM. I was planning on
installing some version of Trusty Tahr (*buntu 14.04) or maybe Debian
testing and then using a live disc (redobackup <http://redobackup.org/>)
to blow the image on the rest of the machines after testing the memory
and hard drives. Brian, the IT bloke at YR is replacing the machines
with NUC <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Unit_of_Computing>s. It
looks like there are another 30 or so of these Dells available to us
when they get readied. If we can spare the table space maybe we can set
up a few machines for visitor browsing in a quiet corner somewhere. And
we should have some nice boxes for the Oakland kids' computer center.
The four boxes I have ready to go are mostly pretty funky, missing
panels, or very loud, etc. I'm sure we can find them a home, though. I
also have a few more expendable desktop Linux machines at home. Finding
rodents, power cords, monitors & keyboards may prove a bit of a
challenge, though I have a few extra keyboards and power cables.
I'm planning on going camping in August, but in September I'd like to
start hosting a weekly Linux install fest/trouble shooting session on
Friday afternoons at 4 PM. Folks can bring their Linux problems in for
troubleshooting, and I can bring pizza back from a pickup I make at 8PM
from a local collective. Maybe if nothing else is going on we can cap
the evening with a tech/polit-related flick to go with the pizza,
perhaps even a round of frosty malted beverages. As I mentioned before,
maybe we could use some always-on machine to act as a proxy for deb
files, so we could update machines at 11MB a second instead of pounding
our limited internet bandwidth. I'm familiar with approx and
apt-cacher, though there are others. I'll bring up the idea during one
of our weekly Wednesday meetings soon.
Einstein & campaign staff
tl;dr can we put this giant robot arm at sudoroom?
http://spaz.org/~jake/pix/giantrobot
this is a six-axis robot with controller. It is actually a MIG welding robot, but we can use it for whatever we want, like a giant 3d printer. It is intended to be secured in position to the floor, or a platform of some kind, and weld metal pieces according to a program you teach it.
if Sudoroom can offer the space for this item, i think it will be a valuable tool and learning platform for robotics, electronics and mechanics, and an opportunity to develop new uses for tools like this.
After restoring the robot to functional status (by volunteers including me) we can play with it in various ways, like use it to play chess (including flipping the table over if it's about to lose)
Later i think we should attach a plastic melter/auger so that the arm can dispense melted ground-up #2 milk jugs or #1 PET soda bottles, and become a large-volume 3d printer. we could put a camera and/or primesense on the end of its hand and make it a 3d scanner or computer vision platform…
If sufficient ventilation is provided to its area, it can actually be used as a MIG welding robot if people want.
here are a couple Motoman robots in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e904eHn8MDIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQQlbx2S-j4
loading ikea shelves:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Duub_dO_TwU
Q: What's the catch?
A: Sudoroom must devote about 16 square feet for the control boxes and about 16 square feet for the robot itself.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: The price is $200 total, but we will have to find a pickup truck to transport it to sudoroom from berkeley. The sellers will load it onto the truck with their forklift, and we may need a forklift to get it down.
Q: But we don't have three-phase power! Isn't 8 KW a lot of power?
A: We can modify it to run on regular 2-phase power, and ideally we will significantly reduce the size of the power source at some point anyway. And 8 KW is the maximum rating, moving continuously at full speed AND welding the whole time. Powering it will not be a problem.
Q: Who is paying for this?
A: I (jake) have $20 on it and at least a couple of other people also are interested. Will you also contribute money or time to this project?
Q: What's the worst thing that could happen?
A: We end up scrapping it because nobody cares about a giant robot :(

This is perhaps the greatest news I've read on Sudo Discuss EVER. It has
always been my dream that Sudo Room provide public computer terminals for
folks without access to the hardware, for classes such as basic computer
literacy, and for events that require computers such as Oakland Wiki
editathons.
Ed, how can I help?
Hey folks!
Not enough people came to the meeting tonight to hold a true meeting and
have quorum for approving our three new member requests. I heard that last
week's meeting was also sparsely attended. Given that we're in a transition
stage, should we consider postponing meetings until, say, August? (And just
to get all meta/catch-22 on you, can we even make this decision without
holding a meeting? The twilight zone...). Anyway, here are some pseudo
notes taken by Julio:
People pseudo-present at Sudo Room meeting:
+Vicky
+Julio
+Timothy
+Elizabeth
+Whitney
TO-DO:
+Vicky will scrub the wordpress to make sure it's clear that we are now at
the new place (someone may have already done this)
+Vicky will update the Google Place for Sudo Room
+Julio will upload photos for how to access the new Sudo.
+Julio will scrub Sudo Room Wiki and Oakland Wiki to make sure it's clear
that Sudo Room is now at a new location.
NEW MEMBERS
+Three prospective members (Timothy, Elizabeth, and Whitney) were waiting
for a meeting that didn't happen due to lack of quorum (10 Sudo members)
pursuant to the current process for becoming a member:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association#Section_2.1.0_Process_for…
+They will try again next week though Timothy suggested that we may
consider having an acceptable process that does not require a quorum at a
physical meeting. He had other ideas about making decisions collectively
online, when necessary, using reddit or reddit-like tools (including one he
recently coded, but is in beta). Timothy will address the Sudo Room
community via email with suggestions.
+In the absence of an alternative process, it was suggested the prospective
members ping the lists/IRC/etc to see if a meeting is actually happening in
case that's their sole reason for coming to Sudo Room on any specific
Wednesday.
DONATIONS + 501C*
+Whitney came representing a network hardware group after following a
suggestion from Daniel that Sudo should be able to solicit and accept
donations like old networking equipment from school districts when they
acquire new equipment. The group has to be able to accept donations that
are tax-deductible, and this is only possible if Sudo has federal
non-profit status [501(c)(*)], and the Sudo wiki states that process as
pending. It is not clear that a decision has been made. Whitney will
message sudo-discuss and sudo-board about his request for information.
