Hi Fixit Coaches:
We have a Fixit Clinic this Wednesday Jan 21 at Northeastern U. / Mills
College:
https://makerspaces.northeastern.edu/events/repair-advice-clinic-4/
Can you Coach? Sign up at http://bit.ly/inpersoncoachsignup
The campus has a beautiful and well-equipped Makerspace complex and the
adjacent Mills College Art Museum is open until 8PM Wednesdays so feel
free to arrive early and walk the campus or visit the museum.
These events are important public-facing outreach programming to raise
the prominence of sudoroom / Omni Commons and recruit new members as we
work alongside neighbors to fix their stuff.
Even if you can’t make it right at the start you’re welcome to drop in
anytime and hang out with us. You’re also most welcome to bring your own
projects to work on.
Sign up at http://bit.ly/inpersoncoachsignup; and if you know anyone
else who would make a good Coach: bring ‘em along!
Hope to see you Wednesday, -Peter

Hi Sudoers:
See this RFP for City of Oakland program that Sudoroom could be
potentially qualified to apply for:
https://apps.oaklandca.gov/ContractOpportunities/Opportunity?num=389532,
the close date is Jan 16 but you might contact the contract manager to
see if the date is extended.
If nothing else: applying for this is good practice for Sudoers who are
interested in securing grants for sudoroom.
Sincerely, -Peter
sudo friends -
In my recent visits to sudoroom, I've talked about and demonstrated FPGAs
(among other things). I personally consider FPGAs to be an enabling
technology, like microcontrollers but with some key advantages.
They also have a reputation of being hard to learn.
There seems to be at least some interest in turning these chaotic discussions
into activities thoughtfully set up for teaching/learning. Maybe the
word "class" won't apply.
I'll keep this first message short, although I certainly have ideas,
at least about how to get started. I'm a huge believer in learning by doing.
I plan to be at sudoroom tonight (Dec 30), and we can have in-person discussions.
Maybe this thread can capture ideas in a less ephemeral form.

Hi everyone! We have 9 days left before the next time we have to pay rent,
and we're short $750. We estimate that in the next 9 days, roughly $300
will come in through the regular monthly donations that members have set
up, which means we're still short $450.
Noisebridge and Double Union have both recently run Gofundme campaigns; we
could do this too but it would take a concerted marketing effort. Is anyone
interested in looking into this with me? Please email me on or off list!

Hi Sudoers:
Some of you might be interested in this new e-bike hub motor with regen
capability.
…”Instead of mounting the disc rotor to the motor’s shell, which has
been the go-to method for decades, they mounted the disc rotor to the
carrier plate that holds the planet gears in the motor’s internal
gearbox. It requires a slightly different shell for the motor – one that
lets a mount connect the disc rotor to the gears’ carrier plate.
…the disc rotor now doubles as the user-operable clutch that has always
been missing. That means the motor can switch into generator mode,
essentially becoming a brake as it loads the motor and converts
rotational energy back into electrical energy to charge the battery. The
controller and motor continuously communicate with each other,
increasing or decreasing braking power according to how hard the user
pulls the brake lever.”

Does anyone want to go to Atlanta in April? lol

I can't remember how I ended up involved with MediaJustice and Mijente, but
I got an email about it from their newsletter. I've never been to this
event before, but I have attended a different conference on media and
social justice called Allied Media Conference put on by the Allied Media
PRoject in Detroit; they're not doing it anymore but it was amazing.
