We're starting this in an hour with some UX designers - it's going to be
super short, but I think ti'd be fun to have an in-person ux workshops at
some point at the omni and sudoroom.

This will mostly be around brainstorming in-person UX meetups in our space
in Oakland. Any online meetups will be purely for brainstorming and
directing energy to in-person meetups.
Non-Profit Mission
Note that *SudoRoom is a non-profit*, so we limit promoting for-profit
companies such as Artificial Intelligence startups, etc. And since our
mission is to serve Oakland I am focusing a lot of the brainstorming topics
to enrich our awesome, diverse city, which is the best example of American
values and definitely has a small-town feel that is completely lost in most
of US suburbia.
While we're poor, we are sexy. I have spoken to other folks, and for-profit
hackathons or corporate meet-ups simply do not have interesting UX
collaborations as they are not a priority there. I've noticed that tech
meetups unfortunately default to treating UX designers are photoshop
jockeys who are there to make pretty screens and not much else.
Since we're a social good non-profit it is possible to make really kickass
UX however you want, which is actually good in the long run for UX
Designers' portfolios! Speculative design is an option. We just ask that we
keep the focus on non-profit tools and on social good as that's part of our
mission.
Slides
Slides exist to be ignored and make us fall asleep but I made some here in
case we have to go beg for funding.

OUR LOCAL ETHIOPIAN BODEGA DOWN THE STREET HAS THESE HEALTHY DELICIOUS DABO
KOLO SNACKS!
Hacker snacks aren’t only chips, pizza and junk food!
At our recent hardware hack night we had some super-healthy Dabo Kolo fried
dough snacks from our bodega next door. It’s an Ethiopian place down the
street that has a cute cat and sells injera (we’ll be talking to them more
in further blog posts).
These dabi kolo fried dough snacks have less than five ingredients and they
are all real, so they pass the Michael Pollan “Is it real food?” test!

Incidentally, the city of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia just built a huge metro
rail line <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addis_Ababa_Light_Rail>, the first
in Africa I think? There’s nothing more cyberpunk than public
transportation! We are down the street from the MacArthur BART and next to
two bike share stations run by Bay Wheels as well.
There are over 20,000 folks from Ethiopia and Eritrea in Oakland <http://At

coffee, injera bread, and authentic meals along with all sorts of healthy
sweets and snacks.
OAKLAND RULES BECAUSE IT’S SMALL TOWN AMERICA AT ITS BEST
*We love Oakland,* and being physically located in the most diverse,
warmest and most all-American small town vibe place in the entire United
States is something that SudoRoom hackerspace is proud of. While we’re
proud to be part of the hacker community, we aren’t “just another”
hackerspace. While Oakland has problems, it is also the most unique and
interesting place in California in our opinions, with a wealth of talent.
Unlike most places in America, it’s easy to walk or bike past dozens of
locally owned businesses, so SudoRoom and Oakland Temescal have a
small-town mainstreet feel you wouldn’t find in other places in the USA.
You really get to know the local business owners here in a way that’s
simply not possible in the other cities with more clean-cut reputations.
And our local businesses aren’t *only *centered around yoga studios and
chain store coffee shops – Oakland has Korean grocery stores visited by
real working class Korean folks, same with the Yemeni and Ethiopian and
Eritrean grocery stores. We’re down the street from the East Bay Center for
Reuse <https://www.creativereuse.org/> where teachers get discounted art
supplies*(gee, I wish they didn’t have to spend their own money to teach
kids but that’s another matte. At least they are still teaching art and not
some soulless corporate multiple choice STEM module like in other places in
the USA)* and hardcore Korean noodle joints.
HOW TO MAKE DABO KOLO AT HOME

This is CC as a member of sudoroom I want to make a proposal to retain the
Media Lab (the same square footage that SMAC occupied) as a sudoroom
resource. I have the funds available (with a little extra for
improvements) to pay for the extra square footage that would be added to
sudoroom lease. This has been a last minute award of funding for me and I
can put in a more detail proposal by week's end but a this time I want to
put that on the table for tonight's meeting.
