Fwd: [sudo-members] Invitation to Attend OSHWA's Open Healthware Conference in New York City!

by Jake

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2025 19:40:57 -0700 From: Open Healthware <openhealthware(a)oshwa.org> To: members(a)sudoroom.org, Alicia Seidle <alicia(a)oshwa.org> Subject: [sudo-members] Invitation to Attend OSHWA's Open Healthware Conference in New York City! Hi Sudo Room folks! I'm reaching out on behalf of the Open Source Hardware Association <http://www.oshwa.org/> to invite you to our upcoming Open Source Healthware Conference <https://healthware.oshwa.org/> taking place August 1&2, in New York City and online. I recently attended an event at Sudo Room and loved the space and people working there together. I thought this invitation might align with the work you all do. The goal of the conference is to share how people are using and developing open source technology in the medical and health field. It is the first event of this kind we are running and we would love to have you and your ideas present. We are currently having a call for speakers <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1BOHmQ6A0VacOBBc_j4wUIYqUaqB2TM3rL0ItqySO7N…> open until June 23 if you are interested in both attending *and *sharing your work! To attend, you can reserve free tickets to the conference here <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-healthware-conference-tickets-13151375949…> and are welcome and encouraged to share the event within your networks. For the past year OSHWA has been hosting strategy session workshops on the Open Healthware ecosystem in order to identify challenges and opportunities. We are hoping to work with the community to design a process to certify open source hardware in the medical field. If you're interested in attending these sessions prior to the conference, you can find out more here <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeDa4gpVXZ5EAelwR0cxqFzhIPcV0wGN7G…> or in the attached fliers. *If you need travel assistance for the conference**, you can apply for up to $1000 in flight reimbursements, hotel accommodations, and per diem expenses. You can apply for these travel funding **here* <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe_AT4RNUc9vZ-RU_BXhosoFnCHtETuo2P…> *. * Check out our website at healthware.oshwa.org for more info! Hope to see you there and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions Looking forward to hearing from you, *Herine Palacios*

Next two Saturdays: public library computer repair-oriented events in Oakland and Berkeley

by Peter Mui

Hi Sudoers: Our friends and fellow fixers at Thinkpads4All.org (a great bunch of high schoolers and college students) are holding computer repair workshops the next two Saturdays at libraries in Oakland and Berkeley: -Saturday, June 21, 2025 2:30pm – 5:00pm 81st Avenue Branch, Oakland Public Library https://oaklandlibrary.bibliocommons.com/events/67cb854e596bfd2f001864d4 -Saturday, June 28 1:00pm - 3:00pm Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch, Berkeley Public Library https://berkeleypubliclibrary.libnet.info/event/13755420 Thinkpads4All brings laptops and disassembly tools to guide participants through taking a laptop apart – to change the battery, to upgrade memory, to replace the hard drive, etc. I’ve been attending their workshops to field general questions about tech repair. You’re welcome to attend just to participate in the Thinkpads4All workshop (and tell your friends too); you’re also welcome to join me in hanging out and fielding questions, or to bring your own laptop or other tech to work on. (Long term: we’re talking with the Thinkpads4All team about incorporating more of a Sudo Room-like component to their future workshops, e.g. inviting people to bring their own broken laptops, helping with software migration (e.g. Windows 10 end of support is this October), and converting laptops and Chromebooks to Linux.) IMO these library-based tech events are an important component of Sudo Room outreach; to raise awareness and recruit new members. Let me know you’re coming by registering at https://bit.ly/inpersoncoachsignup Hopefully see you there , -Peter Peter Mui @ Fixit Clinic www.fixitclinic.org – Neighbors helping neighbors in always there self-care collaborative repair +1 408 647 5790 fixitclinic(a)gmail.com

ice protests

by Patrick Clawson

There is an ICE protest at fruitvale tonight at 6pm so I will either be late to tonight's meetup or not able to make it depending on how things go. This brought up a project I was interested in building, a stingray detector. The instructions I found online require either a RTL-SDR v3 or a HackRF One. Before I buy one online, I was wondering if anyone has one they'd be willing to loan to this project? -- Patrick Clawson

Re: Apartheid-Free Communities pledge

jake sent me a private message where he implied that I am in common with trump supporters. That accusation made me feel unsafe talking to him, so I didn’t reply. Do we want to get added to endof10.org?

by Anca Mosoiu

https://endof10.org is a project to help people re-image their old Windows 10 machines with Linux so they can continue using them. I just found out about this, and noticed that Sudo or Fixit clinics are not listed. Do we want to? Anca. -- -=-=-=- Anca Mosoiu | Tech Liminal anca(a)techliminal.com

Re: Apartheid-Free Communities pledge

An anti apartheid pledge is a fine start, but I wish it was broader to include all forms of targeted-group killing. Anyway, thanks Paige for bringing up process. Apartheid-Free Communities pledge

by Aaron Fenyes

Jake, Lo, and I (Aaron) talked about the Apartheid-Free Communities pledge at tonight's meeting! Here are some combined thoughts. === We should sign as soon as possible === Signing the pledge will counteract ongoing harm in a small but real way, so we should sign it as soon as possible. === Our obligations === Here's an idea of what we think we're promising to do, as an organization, by signing the pledge. --- Items 1-3 --- > WE AFFIRM our commitment to freedom, justice, and > equality for the Palestinian people and all people > > WE OPPOSE all forms of racism, bigotry, > discrimination, and oppression > > WE DECLARE ourselves an Apartheid-free community These are things we have or should have affirmed already, so (re)affirming them presumably won't change anything about how we operate. --- Item 4 --- > WE PLEDGE to join others in working to end all support to Israel's > Apartheid regime, settler colonialism, and military occupation. Here are some ways we can uphold this promise. - Sign the pledge. As Lo pointed out in the quoted e-mails below, just putting our name on the list of signatories already helps uphold our obligations: "It reflects public support to our elected officials when we press them to divest from Israeli violence. It reduces harm to Palestinian and Arab members of our community. It challenges the official narratives and expands the public consciousness around Palestine." - Confirm on our wiki that we've signed the pledge, and add the Apartheid-Free Communities logo. - Facilitate (and, if possible, promote) the use of our space by organizations "working to end all support to Israel's Apartheid regime, settler colonialism, and military occupation." - Provide information resources (like flyers, zines, articles, book chapters, and a listening / watching / reading list) in the space. === Background on the campaign === This Apartheid-Free Communities campaign is financed by the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization. You can find some steering committee members on the campaign site's "About" page (https://apartheid-free.org/about/). All the listed steering committee members are Christian or Unitarian organizations, which for one of us (Aaron) is kind of a red flag. On the other hand, the list of pledge signatories seems to include more diverse religious organizations. In particular, it has a good number of Jewish organizations, including the national and Bay Area chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace. > On Mon, 2 Jun 2025, Jake Watters via sudo-discuss wrote: > > > Let's have a meeting this coming Wednesday, in two days!
