now that we've installed a big on/off switch for the elevator upstairs, which locks out calling it from downstairs, there is no more need to use the Emergency Stop to lock the elevator. In order to help with safety and comply with elevator laws, we should install a loud alarm bell that rings continuously if the emergency stop is activated. Since the only time the emergency stop will be used will be emergencies, this will help save lives by alerting people to the fact that there is an emergency. we should also post a sign in the elevator, warning that use of the emergency stop button for non-emergencies is against elevator law and can be punished as a misdemeanor with up to one year in Real jail. the first time someone decides to do it anyway, they will wake up all the sleeping tenants and get a stern talking-to its not george anymore is it? the alterative is, we add a relay to bypass the stop switch long enough to get the elevator down and open.. problem solved. come on people, we are hackers! lets hack our problems!

There is now a large paper chart in Sudoroom, on the door between the sudo sink and the buzzer phone. It breaks up the next month or so into 3-hour blocks, and you can pen yourself in for any blocks you like. The idea is for people to commit to being at Sudoroom at certain hours, and to identify empty slots, in an effort to help keep Sudoroom open as often as possible! Already I am signed up for tomorrow 9-3pm, and another sudoer has signed up for 9-2 on Friday. More hi-tech solutions are welcome, but we are starting simple in the interest of it actually happening. :)

Cryptoparties: Now Coming Monthly to a Sudo Near You!

Due to incredible enthusiasm and demand, Sudo Room will now be hosting monthly Cryptoparties! Join us from 2-5pm every Third Sunday to learn about digital security and get up and running with basic tools for privacy and anonymity. * * *What's a Cryptoparty?* A Cryptoparty is a safe space for learning about digital security, privacy and anonymity. In the wake of Snowden's leak of the NSA's PRISM project, digital security has become a widespread concern. What most people don't know enough about is the advantages and disadvantages of various tools such as TOR, GPG, and OTR. *That's a lot of acronyms! * No worries! Hey folks, If you have a TIL for things like programming, online books offer a more structured way for people to follow up than simply plowing through blogs. *If someone has a San Francisco public library card they are able to read many of these books online [for free]* For example here are a bunch of O'Reilly etc ebooks for Python: http://sflib1.sfpl.org/search/X?SEARCH=python&x=48&y=10&searchscope=1&p=&m=… This might be a nice thing to put on a TIL page or to email people if they are part of the python meetup

LOL open Friday (noon-5p)!

LOL (Liberating Ourselves Locally) will be open again this week, Friday from noon-5pm. LOL is a hackerspace located in the San Antonio neighborhood of east Oakland, and was founded by and for people of color, women, queer peeps and others underrepresented in tech. Oakland Domain Awareness Center

Hey folks, I'm new on this list, I first visited the sudoroom a month ago or so at the last Cryptoparty and became a member that evening. Some of you may have seen me around, I am a tremendously obese older bloke who generally sports stained suspenders. I have been working with Occupy Oakland for some time and I'm on their web committee, where I've worked with Bill B. & Will H. and perhaps some of the rest of you. Anywho, as you may know last Tuesday the Oakland City Council tried to slip authorization to spend another $2 million bucks on to the supposedly non-controversial consent calender, but a number of us got wind of it and showed up to harangue them so the council set the meeting for next Tuesday, July 30th at 6:30 or so. occupyoakland.org/2013/07/sign-up-and-speak-out-against-government-surveill… http://occupyoakland.org/2013/07/stop-the-oakland-dac-surveillance-city-spe… We are encouraging folks to sign speaker cards and speak out against funding this further movement towards a surveillance state, if you look at the second article towards the bottom you can see basic instructions about how to fill out a speaker card so you can tell the council what you think of tying all the cameras, license plate readers, and other sensors from the city, private security, the OUSD, BART, CalTrans, etc. together to keep an eye on the citizenry. Occupy Oakland discussed also having a rally in front of City Hall, perhaps at 5PM before the council meeting to make a bit of noise. We'd like to have a meeting Thursday to do a bit of research and plan a rally, I thought we might meet at the sudoroom commons area. I know there are already several events planned on an ongoing basis for Thursdays, the Oakland Wiki meeting as well as Wifi Mesh, Python & Javascript meetups. Do you folks think a few of us would get under foot or should I call the meeting for the Oakland Public Library Main Branch teen room or perhaps my fetid domicile?
