Colombian hackerspace kickstarter project for DSLR hacking

by Danny O'Brien

I visited the Bogotá hackerspace, Hackbo, a month or so ago, and chatted to them a bit about how the space is working. It's a really nice hackerspace -- in a residential block, but with four or so big well-equipped rooms, and with a really busy community, and whiteboards full of really detailed ongoing projects, which I sort of feel is the real metric of a great hackerspace. One of the projects that has shifting from being a prototype to being a potential full-time work for a bunch of the key hackers is this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hpsaturn/lumera-transform-your-camera-… It's a linux-based plugin for Digital SLR cameras (if you don't see your camera listed, ask, because they're adding them as they go) that gives you bluetooth LE remote operation, background transfer to online picture services via your phone or wifi. The hardware will be openhardware, the code is FLOSS. The device is going to sell for $150 USD ($170 canadian -- they're working with a Canadian group to do the logistics). Anyway, I just noticed that they're 3 days to go on their kickstarter, but still have a way to go. I don't have any financial connection with these guys or the hackerspace, but I try to plug good hacking projects when I can. I think this'd be a fun gadget to have if you have a DSLR and are interested in doing some connected messing with it, either with the existing features of Lumera or extending it. That's all! Feel free to forward this around to any communities you think might be interested! Omni Crowdfund Perks!

by Jenny Ryan

Hi all! We are in the last stages of preparations to launch Omni's crowdfunding campaign next weekend, and we need your help! Please use this thread to brainstorm on perks we could offer, keeping in mind that *experiences* are cheaper to produce and more interesting to donors than shwag. * Would any sudoers be interested in co-hosting maker workshops? * How about making robot drawings (and recording the robot drawing it) based on SVG images people send in? * Can anyone bottom-line making 3D printed magnets? Or 3D printed something or others? * Marc and I are going to be putting together hackpacks <http://hackpack.me> that people can buy for themselves or for us to donate to a teenager. * Maybe we could offer a 'teleconference with a hacker'? * Anything you can think of! Fact of the day: 85% of successful campaigns raise 1/3 of their goal in the first 72 hours. Please prep friends in your networks now for a donation next week! <3 Jenny http://jennyryan.net http://thepyre.org http://thevirtualcampfire.org http://technomadic.tumblr.com `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. Fwd: [omni-discuss] Can someone promote us @ this event?

by Jenny Ryan

anyone down to go to this and talk about omni? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Keenan <dkeenan44(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Dec 3, 2014 at 9:26 PM Subject: [omni-discuss] Can someone promote us @ this event? To: "discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org" <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org>, fundraising <fundraising(a)lists.omnicommons.org> I goofed - I promised to go to this (to promote our campaign) but actually I am already missing the delegate meeting to have dinner with a potential donor right when it starts.. So, I can't. Yes, I know it's one of those tech things - I know, I know - but we need to spread the word about our campaign to a wider audience. I know little about this group except that they appear to have a social conscience and people who like to find things so that sounds not bad for us. Would someone be willing to go? Sharing the JS Meetup in other places?

by Anca Mosoiu

Hi all, I'm glad to see the JavaScript meetups resuming! While I've never been able to attend, I like to refer people. Is it okay if I post it on the Oakland Beginner Prorammers Support Meetup Group (which I inherited recently)? Cheers, Anca.
