Wikipedia Barn Raising in Oakland, July 19. Focus: OER

Hi Bay Area wikifolk! Please join us for a "Wikipedia Barn Raising" event focusing on Open Educational Resources (OER). The Barn Raising will happen on Saturday July 19th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, at the Oakland Impact Hub, at 2323 Broadway (near the 19th St. BART station). Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Since 2012, we've been working to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of OER and related topics. We've worked to build an international community around this goal at conferences, through our online "Writing Wikipedia Articles" (WIKISOO) course, and through the formation of WikiProject Open. At the Barn Raising, we will focus on improving high-priority Wikipedia articles, and consider ways to strengthen WikiProject Open as a resource for staying connected, learning, and working together. We'll also welcome online participants from around the world, with collaboration tools and scheduled video check-ins. For instance, I'd like to think of this less like "Sudo is paying for this space so it's ours and you can't have it" and more like "this space makes the most sense for our neighborhood's hackerspace and so we're taking responsibility for building and maintaining our neighborhood's hackerspace." And the best way to know what we all need is to have open, functioning channels of communication with each other. :)

This is especially true in video games, in which Black male characters are virtually always violent. This research tested the effects of playing a violent game as a Black (vs. White) avatar on racial stereotypes and aggression. In Experiment 1, White participants (N = 126) who played a violent video game as a Black avatar displayed stronger implicit and explicit negative attitudes toward Blacks than did participants who played a violent video game as a White avatar or a nonviolent game as a Black or White avatar. In Experiment 2, White participants (N = 141) who played a violent video game as a Black (vs. White) avatar displayed stronger implicit attitudes linking Blacks to weapons. Implicit attitudes, in turn, related to subsequent aggression.
