Hey guys,
a friend of mine who works for the city of Oakland and is meeting with the
ACLU on DAC stuff (to fix this nightnare) has asked me for
- a coherent, semi-formal argument against the DAC.
- Language against specific aspects of the DAC like the shot spotters,
facial recognition, etc. What they will be used for vs what they say they
will be used for, etc.
What resources do we have on hand that I can forward or write up for them?
Thanks!
David
Last week tunabanas and I went to represent sudo at Southern Exposure's
grantees ceremony. (We hacked the acceptance speech, and showed artists
they are probably hackers too.) It got me thinking, and I wrote this poem
for sudo.
After and before, all the silenced outcasts leave their trace,
I myself learn electronics and genetics at sudo hackerspace.
Well not quite, but then intentions are there
An eager post-work brain doing what it can to care.
And the movement's building, more people join us to rock-it,
The latest anacho-syndicalists with a California nonprofit.
When only a year ago we were crash test dummies,
2 grants in a row makes us flush with ca$h monies.

Hi,
I just had ankle surgery so I'm not sure if I can help organize the
upcoming post Art Murmur Artmaking party.
*I'm about to strike it out of the calendar... *
*Is anyone interested in running the event on February 7 still? *
Organizing it isn't a big problem, and there are still leftover art
supplies (probably in the radio room) from the last event.
- At the last event the work I had to do to get it going was minimal.
- People just sort of showed up with their own supplies as well, it was
very collaborative.

*SudoRoom Art Making Party*
*As the Oakland Art Mrumur ends, artmaking werewolves converge on the
SudoRoom hackerspace to jam to music, make art, and collaborate in all
sorts of crazy werewolf ways.*
*If you are an artist, performer, genius of ways to set up collaborative
artmaking stations, or have films and videos to show, contact us! We’d like
to see your stuff.*

Did anyone start a quiet work area at SudoRoom? This is ideally a table where people can focus, not be interrupted, or people near this area would be mindful & not talk too loudly.
I think I witnessed something like this one afternoon.
Noisebridge has a similar set up.. I like it a lot,
I'd like to go to sudoroom and have a small mindful area free of people's phone conversations, or be interrupted by someone pitching their political movement or solar energy start up.
(I've been interrupted constantly in the past this way and this is a constructive idea to solve that problem)
To the folks who had a quiet mindfulness area: could we do this again? It's a good idea and in alignment with sudoroom values;: "a hackerspace is for hacking "

Do you want to be lavished with stress, anguish and minimal praise for the
the thankless task of maintaining the sudo door "sudoor"? Well now is your
chance.
Imagine a your mirth at suddenly being responsible for a critical but
poorly working access mechanism!
Why isn't the door electric door opening working reliably? I don't know,
but I can tell you how its supposed to work, which parts are the most
reliable, and the full history. Then you can fix it.
Requirements: None except patience, and I will teach you whatever relevant
skills are necessary to make as poorly a working door as already exists.

I'm working on a small SudoRoom game.
Are there any sound libraries on the server / are there any sounds that
anyone at SudoRoom has made that could be used in a small educational game?
If it's on the SudoRoom server, can I easily access this from my home while
I'm not at the space? [I'm currently disabled and unable to get there
physically]

TL;DR: The folks making the documentary on the commons have agreed to
produce it under a CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0 license (yay!). They plan to shoot
b-roll at the space on Tuesday and Friday, and do filming and
interviews on Wednesday and Thursday. Please reach out to Bunker
(number and email below) if you have questions or concerns, are
interested in being interviewed, or have ideas for the film!

Thanks so much Jenny.
It would be great to e-mail everyone. Feel free to share my e-mail and
number (215-971-0837) in the communication so anyone that wants to be
interviewed, has ideas, or specifically doesn't want to be filmed can
contact me. I'll create an account later today as well.
I'm thinking Wednesday and Thursday will be the main days we come by and
interview and film with tomorrow and Friday being possible b-roll days
(days I just show up with a camera and film some of the behind the scenes
activities).
The things we want to focus on are:
1) What is the impact of declining freedom of communication?
2) How is Sudo working to improve things? (especially the mesh network)
Thanks again, see you tomorrow or Wednesday.

Hi, just wanted to pass this along, the inaugural meeting of the Bay Area
Women in Machine Learning group is happening this Thursday:
http://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Women-in-Machine-Learning-and-Data-Science/
The organizer of the event attended and taught Noisebridge Machine Learning
meetups all the way back to 2010, and I personally know many of the
attendees to be very intelligent, successful, and resourceful. It should be
a great opportunity for any women interested in data science.

EVENT: League of Women to hold discussion about Oakland surveillance (at
the Chamber) Wed, 1/22, 6pm #DAC
http://www.lwvoakland.org/VOTER-January-2014.html#hot
NEXT HOT TOPIC: PUBLIC SAFETY AND PRIVATE LIVES
How does a city like Oakland respond to residents' demands for more
effective crime prevention and reduction while protecting everyone's civil
liberties? How will the Domain Awareness Center impact Oakland? How much
surveillance is enough -- or too much -- to enhance our law enforcement
capabilities? Bring your ideas and a friend to discuss these important
issues with knowledgeable resource people and fellow Oaklanders. We will
meet on Wednesday, January 22 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Oakland
Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce boardroom at 475 14th Street.
Starting now. Live stream link below, embargoed copy of speech attached.
Today will likely also be a good day to get people to sign the petition and shut down the Oakland DAC, following this NSA reform speech.

Hello sudo-ers
Let me introduce myself, although some of you know me already. My name is
Noémie, I'm French - among other things.
I discovered sudo-room last September. It was the first time I set foot in
a hackerspace, and it kind of blew my mind. At sudo room, I discovered the
concept of open source, a concept I didn't really know till then. That,
together with a lot of really great encounters and conversations, kind of
changed things for me, and made me realize that even in what I do in life
(films), I can do things completely differently. Up to now the film
industry has been very hierarchical, in many different ways, and it always
made me uncomfortable. Only recently did I understand that if I sense that
something’s not fair, I can actually do something about it. That was an
empowering realization.
So I've been playing with the idea of making an open source documentary
film at/about sudo room. Before I go any further, I would just like to say
that I saw you're trying to agree on a sort of chart about the conditions
under which you'd be willing to have people film at sudo room, and it all
seems very reasonable to me.
I'd like to expose you my idea, for you to tell me what you think, and
also, if anyone among you would like to participate. I’m hoping that (at
least some of) the ones who will be in the film will also participate in
the making of the film. The project would probably be scattered over a few
months, so that it doesn't feel heavy, but also so that there is time to
develop a genuine narrative, and to follow one or a few projects that could
constitute the backbone of a story.
The question I've been fiddling with is the following: how to make it open
source? And beyond just putting the footage under CC license and leaving it
available somewhere on the internet, how to make it an exciting experiment,
an opportunity to create new processes in film making that are non
hierarchical and more participative? To me the question is also a pragmatic
one: how can this participative process allow to create compelling films
with a vision, films that people actually want to watch, beyond the open
source community?
The idea is to develop a sort of github for editing movies in a
collaborative way, so that as the film is being shot and made, there is a
tool online that allows to do things together:
- rate, annotate, underline the footage or parts of it, organize it
- upload videos, music, etc.
- edit sequences.
- fork the project to create a different timeline and a different movie.
This tool would be free of access and available not only to the people
involved in the project but to anyone, and hopefully will generate a cool
community of users who want to be empowered film viewers *and* makers. To
me it's the continuation of genius director Chris Marker's work with the
Medvedkin Groups in the 60's. * (see below if you want to know more about
it!).
I've been talking about the possibility of building this tool with a really
great and talented hacker that some of you know, Robert M Ochshorn. He's
already made some great advancement on the future of video (two works of
his: http://interlace.videovortex9.net also check
http://montageinterdit.net) and he'd be excited to continue with this
project. I’m excited too actually! I think it could change the whole idea
of how to make films, and what it is to be a spectator, and what is a truly
participative movie... So I’m offering to do an experiment, and I think
sudo room would definitely be the best place to do it, not only because of
all places, it is the one where I would want to experiment in a fun way.
Also because I envision a really good, touching, fun and awakening movie...
hopefully more than one movie!! I hope that after the 1.0 movie is
released, it is only the beginning of an adventure consisting in hacking
the movie. Making a different version of it, maybe more than one.
I'll be in Oakland starting from February and I'm thinking of spending some
time at sudo - probably for other projects as well. I'd like to take this
time to think of how to do it, what story (ies) to tell, talk about the
project to whomever among you is interested in participating in it, and see
more concretely how it could be done in a participative way, but also with
a vision, and a unity, so that it actually has a reach.
I wrote this email today because I’d like everyone to know about it, and
open a discussion that I hope will mostly take place in real life when I’ll
be here in February rather than on this email list, although I would be
happy to already get some feedback, questions, advice or ideas that you
think are relevant at this stage…
Thank you!
A bientôt :)
Noémie
* Chris Marker went to film the factory strikes in Besancon; and when he
showed his film to the workers, they said that he’s completely incompetent,
that it does not represent their point of view at all, that this director
from Paris is just like the bosses that exploit them. Chris Marker agreed
that the film was filmed from his point of view, and created with the
workers the Medevkin groups. He shared with them the material, the means
and the knowhow to create their own movies, and helped them to re-edit his
own footage. Some of the films of the Medvedkin groups are amazing.

hey all,
I heard a rumor from my roommate that Grocery is setting up electronics
recycling Saturday and Sunday, 2900 Broadway just up the street from sudo
room.
Any confirmations? I'm seeking one currently.
If confirmed, anyone want to check it out to (a) drop stuff off we don't
need (b) keep our eyes peeled for good fixable stuff!?

Dear friends,
it's been a while, and I miss you all.
Starting next Wednesday (5–7pm, right before the weekly meeting), Global
Lives is hosting a month-long, 17-screen exhibit in San Francisco to host
salon gatherings for broader audiences interested in global citizenship and
travel, empathy and education, and film and new media, as well as field
trips for Bay Area schools for workshops on empathy and global citizenship.
This exhibit is part of its initiative to provide educational materials for
over 400 teachers in the USA and around the world who asked for help using
video as a resource in their classroom.
Because I believe in the power of people speaking for themselves, I'm
working with Global Lives to build their education program and broader
community. And thanks to the support we received last year, Global Lives
produced 8 videos within 11 months! The amazing series features a day in
the life of 10 transit workers around the world.
You can preview five of the films at
www.globallives.org/liveintransitpreviews/ and learn more about the exhibit
opportunities atwww.globallives.org/exhibitmonth2014.
*Before Friday at 2PM, Global Lives needs $9,500 to put curriculum and
resources in the hands of teachers and show its video library of life
experience to a wide audience – please donate
at www.globallives.org/donate/ <http://www.globallives.org/donate/>.*
I would be humbled and thankful if you would donate to support this amazing
work today.
Sincerely,
Danny

#Jan25: 3 years later. An educational day long program on #Egypt
https://www.facebook.com/events/424246587705844/
Dear friends and supporters,
As many of you probably know, the third anniversary of the Egyptian revolution is coming soon less than 2 weeks from now.
We are hosting a full day educational program to mark the anniversary of the ongoing Egyptian revolution, it's a collaboration between me and local organizers and supporters here in the San Fransisco Bay area.
In Egypt, the 25th of Jan this year is going to be a day of action against the continuity of military rule and the atrocities committed by the coup regime.
The program will start from 3 pm and will be all night long until the last person leaves, so you're welcome to stop by any time!
Program details will include but not restricted to:
-Film screening of rare footage highlighting different stages of the Egyptian struggle. -Skype conversations with Egyptians in Egypt and abroad to hear their perspective on the situation.
- A talk by Shimaa Helmy, an eyewitness to the Egyptian movement who's currently in Oakland, CA.
- An open forum and a Q/A session on the state of affairs in Egypt since 2011 and up to date.
Other activities will be included soon and added to the event page here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/424246587705844/
The event is hosted by the Sudo Room hacker space
2141 Broadway St, Oakland, California 94612
I'm not sure for how long I will be in the US and I'm trying to do as much as I can here before I have to go back home.
I will appreciate it if you came by or at least spread the word about the event.
Much appreciation,
Shimaa Helmy

Hey folks,
Berkeley Copwatch is in need of a new police radio scanner! It seems
that the police department has switched frequencies/gone digital and
their old scanner doesn't work anymore.
Does anyone know anything about police radio/scanners and would want to
have a conversation with me about them? Anyone know anything about some
of the sdr options available and whether or not we could realistically
hack something that would be effective?
Any help is great!

Hey everyone,
I'm starting this course called appacademy at the end of the month and some
people who are attending want to study some ruby quizes together. I have
proposed sudoroom as a location and meeting up around 6pm, is that ok?
This may happen a few times over the next two weeks before our class
starts.
Thanks!

Tonight at Sudo Room from 6:30-8pm:
Join the GETit Project and Counter Culture Labs for a beginning class
on molecular cloning. We will cover the use of online tools to acquire
genetic sequences, go through the process of designing primers and
vector selection, and start designing cloning experiments to be
conducted for the GETit Project. We hope to eventually take the front
end work we’re doing here and bring the class into the laboratory to
perform their own cloning experiments!

Hey all, I've been working to revive the space program at noisebridge and
will be heading over there this evening if anyone is interested. One of the
projects I'm thinking of is experimenting with ways to integrate with mesh
and potentially use weather balloon lofted radios for popping up nodes for
events or emergencies.
There's boxes of balloons & circuits and a couple of big 'ole tanks of
helium.

Chief Space Cadet

Hi everyone! Just a quick reminder that we are having a Machine Learning
meetup at Noisebridge in the Church room (Northeast corner classroom), at
7pm this Thursday, January 16th. There will be a class targeted towards
beginners to machine learning. Very basic programming knowledge, like using
variables, arrays, and loops, would be helpful.
The schedule will go something like this:
7:00pm - 7:30pm
Project Talks, and SAGE and ebook distribution - People interested in
presenting ideas for projects can stand up and share their ideas for
projects to find collaborators. USB keys with SAGE and machine learning
resources will be handed out for installation.
7:30pm - 8:30pm
Project people can break off and continue collaborating. For beginners and
all other interested parties, I'll give an interactive tutorial on
regression via SAGE worksheets and the projector.
Hope to see you there! If you're interested in getting a head start:

P.S. The intro classes will be recurring, probably every 1-1.5 months, so
don't freak out if you can't make it! I will also consider teaching the
intro class on a weekend if there is enough demand. If you're interested in
helping out to teach or create course material please contact me or solicit
the mailing list(s).
Heyo Sudoroom!
Oakland is hosting it's first Startup Weekend event (
http://bmaoakland.startupweekend.org/) and I thought y'all might be
interested in knowing more.
The hackathon focuses on community problem solving through five tracks
(health, education, restorative justice, gaming, and sustainability), and
in collaboration with The Hidden Genius Project, it's also providing an
opportunity for young Black men to participate in the process by joining
your team as designers or developers.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the hackathon; so if you want to do
some home-grown problem solving in your own community, check out the info
for the event.

Hey guys
I just broke my ankle skateboarding. I'm interested to know if anyone here
has hacked any knee scooters, crutches etc.
I'm setting up a new wiki:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/HackHumans
I'm going to be getting a knee scooter soon, and fully intend to festoon it
with LED lights, arduinos, and the like.
I'll be documenting my experiences on SF public transportation. My only
regret is not being aware of these issues sooner!

hi all,
please forgive me this one-time abuse of the sudo list for discussing
non-sudo issues, but i thought that this might be relevant to you or
someone you know.
i work at the nonprofit localwiki <http://localwiki.org> and due to travel
plans that will mean that we won't need to use our office in february,
we're looking for a subletter for the month.
the office fits 3 people, is furnished, has fast wifi, and is about a 10
min walk from 16th st. mission bart. it's $600/month.
if you or someone you know is interested, get in touch.
thanks,

I found a cardboard box, open, shipping label says recipient was ZAFER
YASA of FEMTOCHROME RESEARCH in berkeley (shipped in april 2013)
it contains seven FPGA development boards in various states of
construction and hacking, wires hanging off etc. including a bunch of
open-hardware boards like the LX9 v1.0
there is a paper note that says W.I.P. SEPTEMBER 21
which stands for Work In Progress probably. Well it has been almost four
months, when do we get to start hacking on this stuff? There is no other
information that I can find.
Does anyone know anything about this stuff?

To: Dan Whaley <dwhaley(a)hypothes.is>
Hey Folks,
We’re hosting this month’s Open Drinks event in the East Bay, because … of
course!
Based on the suggestions of yonder denizens, we have settled on Free House
http://www.berkeleyfreehouse.com/
It’s just a short jaunt from the Downtown Berkeley BART station for all you
SF people.
http://goo.gl/maps/THRtN
We’ll gather around 6pm on Tuesday January 21
Look forward to seeing you all there. Moving forward we'll try to stick to
getting together every month or two, and alternating more or less both
sides of the bay based on the evolving attendance.
Please help get the word out to anyone in the open source, open science,
open data and open knowledge communities.
Also, there’s a twitter account now: @SFOpenDrinks
And I’ve just tweeted out these details, here. Perhaps you could help with
a RT. Thanks!
https://twitter.com/sfopendrinks/status/421837903052804096
See you there,
Dan
Here's a step-by-step guide to donating with Gittip:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Gittip
We're up to $200/week! Can we make $250 today? Have any of you been
meaning to sign up but not done it yet?
It looks like we're ramping up to move to a bigger space sometime
soon. Are you more likely to give money if we have a bigger space with
more room for projects, industrial equipment, classes, meetings, etc?
Would you be more likely to use the space? If so, would you consider
starting to give now? It will help us plan for the future to know how
much people are willing to give!
Thanks so much!
Hey-oo!
Does anybody have significant experience with (building or otherwise)
hown-grown home security systems? It seems that motion detectors with an
alert connection to a security firm (or at least to your cell phone) might
be one way I heard of. Anybody care to share their knowledge, either via
the list or in-person?
