Who makes Robots?

Hi all, I was referred to your group by a colleague. I work on photo shoots and we are looking to have a robot made for it. The image being shot is young people in a class room scanning the robot in a 3D printer. The shoot will take place in the bay area. Here are the basic requirements for it: Cannot be proprietary, must be unique Does not have to work (but must look like it does) Appropriate for high school age kids Be approx 12” high We are open to someone who already has one built or someone who can build one. We need it by next Friday. pair programming station and UPSs

by "jake's co-working station" robb means "the pair-programming station" which is a desk on wheels with two monitors, two keyboards, and two computers arranged symmetrically so that two people can use the same computer. https://sudoroom.org/wiki/ there are three UPS at the pair programming station. sudo access door

I noticed someone swept sudoroom and cleaned up a little bit, and it looks nice. I spent some time tonight moving stuff to the e-waste area and throwing out trash and recycling and stuff. There was a lot of stuff that I was like "how the fuck did this even get inside sudoroom? Someone dumped it on us? I really look forward to the day when Sudoroom has its own door, that can be closed and locked when no members are here. That way, if someone wants to drop off a bunch of garbage that they found down the street in the Creative Re-Use dumpster, they will have to explain it to the member who is watching out for that stuff - and hopefully the member will be discriminating about donations. Don't get me wrong, we get great donations, and they need sorting and it's OK, but we get a lot of junk that doesn't belong, and I can only imagine that it's being dropped off when nobody is here to say "wait what!??! NO!!! take it back to wherever you got it, you can't leave that here." so, what do we think about a door? I guess it's complicated because there are three ways to get into sudoroom. -jake

unwanted giant printer/copier in sudoroom

there is a giant printer or photocopier thing in sudoroom, nobody wants it here, it should go. I think it works, there are instructions on the front for what to do in case the menu comes up in Japanese. If you know anyone who wants it they should take it away, at least out of Sudoroom. It is a: SAVIN 3350 DNP I think you need a pickup truck to move it, but it might fit in the trunk of a large car. It comes with extra drums or ink or whatever. If nobody responds to this message saying they want to take it, i will find someone to get it out of here within the next few days. -jake

Affordable housing near Sudo Room or Noisebridge?

Hi all, I'm Steve Phillips, co-founder of Santa Barbara Hackerspace <http://sbhackerspace.com/> and Python/Go/JavaScript developer. I gave a talk at DEF CON last year and in a week I'm moving from Santa Barbara to the Bay to be closer to DEF CON/cypherpunk-type people. I checked out Sudo Room a couple days ago, and got to meet Jake/jerkey and a couple other people. Anyone know of any places for <= $1200/month that's close to either Noisebridge or Sudo Room? I've found Hack'n'Sleep and other "hacker houses"/hostels like that, but something less cramped or close to fellow cypherpunks would be better. Any tips you have would be appreciated. sudo finance update - check that you're paying your dues!

Greets all, *Please login to your account at sudoroom.org/humans <http://sudoroom.org/humans> and check that you're paying your dues.* - All recurring stripe plans total $1105/month, with 28 members paying through sudo-humans - We receive approx. $17/wk from Gratipay, or $68/month - We receive approx. $215/month via PayPal, with 4 members paying this way - Assorted cash donations average $50/month, with 2 members paying this way. Total recurring monthly income is *$1528/month *with *34 members *paying. According to sudo-humans, there are 146 'comrades' and 32 'members' - the real number of actual members is somewhere closer to 100. We need to increase our monthly income by *$930* to remain fiscally solvent. For the past couple of months, we have been able to pay our recurring monthly expenses ($2446 for rent/utils and $12 for our Digital Ocean server) thanks to the generosity of a single dedicated members (thank you!!) Folks able and willing to work on other fundraising schemes - grant applications, year-end fundraising letter, selling stuff, fundraising events etc welcome and appreciated. We could also very much benefit from more folks contributing to sudo-humans. i still think that if sudoroom managed the a/v aspect of event rentals & omni kept the general rent from same, not much would functionally change. all the working groups would be omni's & delegates would still make the decisions. sudoroom would merely handle the a/v side (which we currently contract out to trained members) most of the a/v stuff is sudoroom's anyway several sudo members are willing to start an a/v training program instead of splitting the building in half, we could split rentals...omni gets the space rental/sudo gets the a/v contracts which, if part of an educational program, will be considered charitable. i'm getting free training at owhstudios.tv on video production/broadcast (they're aiming to open Oakand's public access cable channel). one the organizers there asked me if i had a hdmi projector they could borrow for a presentation they're giving next wednesday does anyone object to me taking sudo's white hdmi projector to owhstudios on tuesday & picking it up on thursday? i'll buy a new one (probably led) if anything happens to it additionally, they've shown an interest in helping us setup a video production studio here if anyone is interested

Her life expectancy is 15+ years. She is a pure bread Yorkie with long legs and a floppy right ear. She is house broken. She is so sweet with people and children. Bella weighs about 10 lbs. Eats 1/3 cup "Hunden Flocken” dry dog food mixed with chicken scrap & hot water once daily. Bella is good on a leash when we go for walks and she relieves herself in out back yard. Her poops resemble marbles - firm to pick up. I'm looking for a good local home, so I can stay in touch, help if you want to go out of town with boarding and will offer free biweekly grooming/ bathing if you adopt her. She would be a perfect first dog for a family with small children. She seems fine with cats & chickens. I do think she catches rats in our back yard - but that could be our other dog. I've had dogs my whole life and I'm happy to teach you how to care for a dog if it is your first time. I paid quite a lot for her 1 year ago. There will be a rehoming fee to adopt her. I love Bella and don't want to give her up but her frisky aggression toward our other dog is not conducive to peaceful living. I Have been looking for an experienced animal aggression behaviorist but haven't heard back after leaving lots of messages. My husband and 11 yr old son "had it" a while ago and I have to say I'm at the end of my rope. She is a sweet sweet dog and I wish I could keep her so if you are an expert level dog behaviorist or trainer - your advice is welcome. When I adopted Bella the CL post said "she must be an only dog" and now I understand why. I though I could change her but I made a mistake. SudoBike?!?!?!!!! I don't know what this is, but it sounds pretty neat! I sure do <3 SudoRoom & SudoMesh, and bikes. Looking forward to having some time to regularly visit again!!! I've been saying how bad we need a folding bike over here biweekly for awhile, so if there's no immediate use/room, I'd be ecstatic to house & attempt to upgrade it for however long. How often is the Sudo/Omni wish list is updated? In my nonexistent spare time, I would love to make a little web app* that community users could update with various needs/wants/haves. While I don't have much in the way of spare time right now, I do have a lot of potentially useful "assorted randoms" on hand that I'd be happy to contribute. Miss coming by; hope to be able to come soon & check out all the amazing things everyone has been up to. Speaking of which- how does Sudo feel about field trips? I'm working part time with an org who is teaching CS/Intro to Web Dev in public high schools. We are piloting in the schools with the highest number of free & reduced lunches. In addition to our attempt to bring CS education to economically marginalized communities, we are also attempting to disrupt the tech divide and school to prison pipeline. One program is in Oakland this semester. We take field trips, and I think a hackerspace trip could be an invaluable experience to include, along with all of the intimidatingly glossy, alternate universe style corporate digs we will visit. I'd like to bring my class to Noisebridge, as it's a < 5 minute walk to there from school and NB allows field trips. However- nothing against NB, I fully support them/think they're awesome, and these may have been totally isolated incidents involving non members- I have some concerns due to past personal experiences there. Since our classes consist largely of underrepresented minorities in tech (including myself and the Oakland instructor), I might feel more comfortable bringing them to Sudo/Omni, if we could arrange it. Does Omni/Sudo have a field trip policy &/or has this ever happened? They are small (20) classes of high school kids who are great to be around (and more respectful/mature than a lot of adult, professional engineers I've met), so I don't think it would be a huge burden on the space. Likely, our only ask would be a volunteer to show us around and explain things. Figured I should ask before bringing up the possibility to any of the other instructors. What are your October goals at SudoRoom?

I have a small amount of time to drop by SudoRoom and Counter Culture labs this month. I decided it's would be fun to write some October goals. Here's a picture to boot! Habitual - every time I go to SudoRoom and back, leave something creative behind like a drawing - say hi to everyone and remember we are all creative fun animals - face to face is so nice! But for longer term projects: October goals at SudoRoom - getting ready for Snowboarding - going to SudoRoom to understand how my snowboard is made, understand how to repair things, understand how to fix things if I need to (even if I don't), potentially donate snowboard equipment to SudoRoom for others to use as long as it's not a storage space issue - Jump start the old accessibility projects - a few years ago I broke my ankle, and had a lively discussion with many Noisebridge and SudoRoom folks about cheaper alternatives to current medical hardware, which tends to be proprietary and overpriced, and even ugly - somehow start again the Art & MRI project that we had. We had some discussion and it tapered off. I'd like to make a book or something. - make a few SudoRoom stickers - see if anyone is doing some kind of virtual reality education project at SudoRoom - do some kind of iphone or ipad pro project involving accessibility. This is my handicraft by day and I'd rather stick to one thing instead of being distracted by ten million platforms. That being said, there are an amazing amount of accessibility APIs with apple and I want to use that knowledge for good So everyone, what are your October goals? Donation: folding bike this month? Do you have space?

Hi, I have an extra tern link folding bike. The gears are janky but it's functioning. In the long term the gears will have to be replaced but that would be more than the cost of a new bike. However, the bike is working and might be of use to folks. Is there space at SudoRoom and CounterCulture labs for this bike? I think it might be a useful addition to the SudoBike! front door computer offline (but working?)

the front door computer does not appear to be on the network. i'm guessing people are still using their cards to get in, but if there's a problem, for example if it gets unplugged from electricity and switches to battery backup, we will not be notified and will not know to send help. can someone take a look at the ethernet situation over there and see why it's not getting back to the main network? -jake

The application is due by October 14th, and the SF focus group meets on Nov. 16th. yes the ad says $50 but if you're actually interested in it you can have it for free, assuming you can come to west oakland to pick it up. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/atq/5797796061.html it probably works if you just plug it in, although you should bring up the voltage slowly with a variac since the capacitors are probably.. whatever old capacitors do when they sit for a long time. we can do that together before you put it in your car. or you can rip out all the electronics and put a VGA monitor and raspberry pi in the cabinet, whatever you want. -jake

Outreachy - remote internships in Free and Open Source Software

Hi all - I participated in this program back in 2013, with the Open Technology Institute. Let me know if you're interested in applying and would like a referral! -- Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user the freedom to use, share, study, and improve it. FOSS contributors believe that this is the best way to develop software because it benefits society, creates a fun collaborative community around a project, and allows anyone to make innovative changes that reach many people. In an effort to improve diversity in FOSS, a number of organizations are offering remote and mentored Outreachy internships through a program organized by Software Freedom Conservancy. These internships are open internationally to all women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Additionally, they are open in the U.S, to all Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander people. The stipend for the program is $5,500 (USD). Applicants must be available for full-time, 40-hours a week, internships. The application deadline is October 17, 2016 and the internship dates are December 6, 2016 to March 6, 2017. College students from the Southern Hemisphere who will have a school summer break during most of this time are particularly encouraged to apply. Coding, user experience design, documentation, bug triage, community engagement, and other types of projects are available. But I'm DYING to get rid of this stuff! 'Dead Guy' sales are when one of our local Electronics people kicks the bucket, and all the other electronics people go to the sale and have a sort of reunion while we rummage through all the stuff. I've often wondered what my 'Dead Guy' sale would be like, so I've decided to have it early so I can attend! I'm shutting down my electronics shop of 14 years, and I need to pare down all the fantastic treasures I've scrounged over the years! There's actually a lot of good equipment in there, along with vintage stuff, random doodads, and just plain junk. Lots of computer monitors, all flat screen. Hard to find small ones, a few large very nice ones. Color laser printer with low page count and full toner carts. Very nice. BIG projection screen, projector, old-school B&W and antique CRTs, A great 16 channel Mackie mixer, various robot entrails, and some things that even I, a champion of 'what's that thing', cannot identify. And just a lot of awesome random electronic JUNK! Also lots of fantastic SHELVING! (you know you want it) Come on down while the deals are fresh!
