finance-wg report back

i attended the finance wg meeting tonight where i learned that our 4 months in this building may be more like 2 months. additionally, the finance wg apparently has huge holes in their records & ask that the collectives give an accounting of any & all payments to the omni over the past year. it was also suggested that we start making plans to exit the building around the new year as our $ will likely run out by then. ~r

do you want...

Sudo, Do you want any of the following things? 1. an awesome floor fan. The 3-speed fan motor seems to have died in its sleep, but the sweeping/ocsillator and timers still work, as does the remote control. 2. a small profile linux laptop. There's a short in the cable to the display, should be an easy fix (replace that cable) or use external monitor. Sweet little thing from zareason, currently running ubuntu, probably 5 years old. 3. a pair of desktop Harman/Kardon speakers that just stopped working. I suspect the plug or speaker-to-computer wiring. They kick ass when working. This is the first of more than one notes, offering what I think has sudo-level promise. j.

there is now a payphone outside Omni

tonight Robb and I bolted a payphone to the outside of The Omni, next to the front door (on the right). There is no coin box or cover, and the coin slot is filled solid with hot glue. it's wired to a VOIP box inside with the door opener computer. There is an asterisk server in sudoroom made entirely by Robb, which provides telephone service to the VOIP box on the payphone, as well as two other VOIP phones so far - one for sudoroom and one for CCL. The "phone numbers" are sudoroom: SUDO# (7836#) counter culture labs: CCL# (225#) front door: LULZ# (5859#) the asterisk computer is running "FreePBX" and I have no idea how it works. Robb is the expert but he is just getting started/ My vision for the system is thus: Person picks up payphone, gets an immediate recorded message saying "Welcome to the Omni. Please enter the extension of the collective you are trying to reach, or 1 for a directory" and then have it give a directory if you press 1. Then when the collective picks up the phone, they hear that you're outside the door and they can "buzz" the door open by pressing * or whatever on their phone. (Insert magic asterisk script here) Person outside presses the doorbell button: Instead of the doorbell ringing, the button goes to a computer which then calls the payphone, causing it to ring (yes it rings). Person who pressed the doorbell button answers the phone, and hears the above message, since a "doorbell" is really not appropriate for a space like the Omni. (We can still have it be wired to the doorbell but it should do the above and get the people to use the payphone to contact the collective they want) There is no limit on the number of phones we can add. We can put them all over the Omni and probably all over the world with a tiny bit of network routing. Also if you have nice non-cordless telephones (not rotary though) please consider donating them to the project. Or VOIP boxes. I don't think we should tie the system into the regular telephone system, for several reasons. But I do think we should allow hackerspaces around the world to tie into it and be able to call sudoroom and CCL and each other, but we will have to see what the network traffic adds up to on our DSL. Please get in contact with me or Robb if you have ideas for the system or want to help administrate it. We have no idea how to operate Asterisk or FreePBX. thank you -jake

Want a free inkjet printer + scanner?

Does anyone want a functioning HP Photosmart 2575 inkjet printer + scanner? It was in working order last we used it. Getting rid of it because I'm fed up paying through the nose for inkjet cartridges, so we're switching to a B/W laser printer. And who needs a scanner anymore, now that you can simply take a high-res photo of any document with your smartphone? Anyway - anybody want it? If not, I may just drop it off as E-waste, or disassemble it for parts... Patrik

hey now, joe from food not bombs gave me some coffee the other day for when we set up the front welcoming area & i stashed it in a black trash bag in sudoroom cuz i was in a hurry to go serve a meal at people's park. if anyone has seen it, i would appreciate getting it back. i want to use any donation $ we receive from it to support the front room project. thx ~r

Roger Dingledine visits Techno-Activism Third Mondays this month for a mini-State of the "Onion" for the anonymizing and censorship-circumventing network. Come along to discuss future directions for Tor, potential challenges, and opportunities for volunteer involvement. Roger is one of the original developers of Tor, along with Nick Mathewson and Paul Syverson. Electronic Music Production Meetup Group - Sundays 5-7PM

Hi Sudoers, Last night was the first electronic music production meetup and it was great fun! Some friends showed up later in the evening and we had an impromptu jam. I'll be holding this meetup every Sunday between 5-7(ish) pm. We can meet at Sudo Room and move into another open room in Omni if necessary. This group will be focusing on the production/composition/programming aspect of electronic music production with an emphasis on Ableton Live and Logic Pro X. However,all DAW's (Reason, Cubase, Pro-Tools, Fruity Loops Studio) are welcome. I'd like to keep the group loose and unstructured for now so we can let it grow organically. The idea is to meet others interested in electronic music production, learn from each other, inspire ideas, collaborate on projects, etc. I understand there is another music collective forming at Omni same night and time and I have reached out to them to see if we can combine forces! Looking forward to meeting and collaborating with more of you! ~ Merry

Omni front door card access restored

The magstripe card access system at the front door works again. The problem? It got unplugged from electricity. It needs to be plugged in. Presently it's plugged into an extension cord. There is a backup battery in it, which can operate for a really long time, and as soon as it's unplugged, it starts telling us in IRC (hacker chatroom) and we start telling each other to plug it back in, but none of us are there. This happened, and everyone in the chat was like "lol plug it back in pls" but it didn't happen. Instead people came by Omni and marveled at the various wires in the system, thinking they must be the problem. One person replaced the wires to the door, wiring them incorrectly in the process. Eventually it got plugged back into the extension cord and powered up again, but I had to fix the rewiring that happened while people were trying to fix it. It works now. Moral of the story: we are going to wire the thing into the AC wiring of the building so this doesn't happen anymore.
