It's very difficult to have a landlord with no clear boundaries. I get the
feeling we are not the kind of tenants he wants to be working with, or is
capable of working with. I have my own share of George stories.
If we want to stay in the space, I would suggest that we be proactive in
getting him to modify the lease so that we can all be on the same page
with expectations. I think it's also fair to say that we've pushed pretty
hard on him as well with what his expectation may have been for us, for
example having large events in the common area is no in the lease as far as
I know, but he has allowed it to happen, but because we don't have an
actual agreement hes coming back
with arbitrary enforcement of arbitrary rules.

1. move
or
2. make sure that our expectations from and for the landlord are in writing
or
3. Continue to take his arbitrary rants at random members of sudo room, and
just placate (or ignore) him as much as possible (what we are already
doing).

I just sent them an email on behalf of sudo room, asking if we could set up
a time to tour the space, meet the landlord, and discuss compatibility.
We're currently paying $2/sqft, so this could be ideal. Marc has also been
looking into potential spaces that are zoned for bio research.

So, a move is a pretty big step. Have there been any other issues with
the landlord? I do agree that gender sensitivity is important, and yet
if there aren't any other complaints, I wonder if it's something we

There have been other issues. I am wary of listing them out, but like I
said they all surround having no clear boundaries and expectations and his
communication style of just saying whats on his mind, maybe throwing in a
threat, and then leaving.
I think though in general we have been thinking about looking for a new
(bigger) space for awhile. No time like the present to start shopping
around. If we find something that fits in the budget and is close to bart
why not?

Regarding our budget, I think that members in the past were expected to pay

I completely understand why members in this thread want to move into a new
space, both for the comments from the landlord and for other reasons as
well (moar space!), but I'd definitely like to advocate that we proceed
with due diligence. Matt mentioned trying to start a process where we
continually understand the real estate market and what our options are...
With that in mind, maybe we can figure out a process where:
- we try to evaluate as many different spaces as possible, based on
criteria determined by consensus, and in those criteria...
- determine what's financially feasible, at what time period, with what
funding, etc. Rusty recently sent out that survey recently about funding,
and the few responses I read weren't at significantly higher price points,
though our questions centered around reserves.
I suppose that I see the comments from the landlord as a potential
additional reason to re-evaluate the space, but not one minimally
sufficient to immediately relocate.
As Bill mentioned, it'd be great to form some kind of exploratory committee
with the Public Schools. There's a lot of available commercial space out
there, and it'd be great to try and evaluate as much as we can.
If anything, this thread demonstrates that we have a lot of leverage in the
management of the space. We could probably leave pretty easily, and it's
likely that group consensus would be okay with that. At the very, very
least, we need to ask that he respectfully talk to our members. Or, for
that matter, guests of our members. You know, people. As for his
conservative ideas about gender, a conversation with him when he's not in
rant-mode really might help.

though, granted, we have also put him through what I'm sure is unexpected
turbulence - but it should also be noted for the record that his rapport
with the EAST BAY *MEDITATION* CENTER was horrible enough to warrant them
moving out on bad terms.
Andrew's suggestion re: a revision of the contract is a good one, but I
have the feeling it wouldn't do much to change deeply-embedded behavior
patterns. We are growing too large for the space, regardless, and I also
think it could be a great opportunity for a serious crowdfunding campaign.

it's likely that group consensus would be okay with that. At the very, very
least, we need to ask that he respectfully talk to our members. Or, for
that matter, guests of our members. You know, people. As for his
conservative ideas about gender, a conversation with him when he's not in
rant-mode really might help.

There have been other issues. I am wary of listing them out, but like I
said they all surround having no clear boundaries and expectations and his
communication style of just saying whats on his mind, maybe throwing in a
threat, and then leaving.
I think though in general we have been thinking about looking for a new
(bigger) space for awhile. No time like the present to start shopping
around. If we find something that fits in the budget and is close to bart
why not?

Due diligence? Yes!
The search for new space? Yes! (Jenny, sign me up for Thurs if a scouting party is
assembling)
A search for a new space helps empower us with choice. It might help George consider his
words and approach more carefully, knowing that we are considering leaving (or he might
just be an unapologetic rager in which case no amount of discussion or amendments to the
rental agreement would help).
I'm also hoping landlords talk (maybe not to George, tho ;) and I plan on mentioning
our current address and landlord to any prospective landlord with the intention of the
news getting back to George. In this way George may apply whatever modicum of self-control
and civility to his interactions with us, his valued tenants.
I'm going to ask George, if he would be willing to sign a letter of recommendation
endorsing us as tenants that pay rent on time. ;)

I don't think the zoning on Franklin would work out for bio, but I should
really let Marc answer - he's got all the details.
Regardless - the East Bay DIYbio group is looking for a home as well, so we
may be able to join forces with sudoroom in househunting. We'll likely have
more restrictive zoning requirements than sudoroom though...

up a time to tour the space, meet the landlord, and discuss compatibility.

I love the idea of a list of requirements.
For me, I like the current SudoRoom spaces because of the big common area
with a library like space. any future space for work or play for me would
have a lovely common room as well.
If any future area has a safe common area that's a layer removed from the
street that's pretty cool.
I think it helps a lot with welcoming newcomers, who might feel
claustrophic jumping into the SudoRoom right away.
the common area also does a lot to dissolve potential conflicts, as it
provides many peaceful spaces away from the sudoRoom itself. noisebridge
has a lot of side rooms that serve the same purpose.
I like that the common area is not at street level and that people have to
make a commitment to walk up the stairs... but then the common room is like
a halfway point, a nice limbo where people can dip in and out of the
sudoroom before making up their minds.
I used to volunteer at Rock Paper Scissors Collective and we'd get all
sorts of interesting characters, but they have a storefront, so it's a
different vibe.
i like the random interactions we have with the Public School. i feel that
they are doing the same thing as us in a twisted kind of way.

$3200-3500/mo in member dues, so we'd need to stretch a little bit, but I
think with some fundraising we might be able to pull it off.

Big +1 to David! hopefully some of us are going over there to check it out
today at 3pm. I'll take pictures / if you can join us that would be great
or maybe we can schedule another time for a joint Sudo Room / AMT viewing.
I wanted to also throw in that Roshambo Media is also looking for a new
office space due to some landlord issues (ie. raising the rent arbitrarily)
and we'd be sad without sudo room next door. We are looking for a space
where we can close the door and make noise for about $300/month. if there
is a space on either floor like that we'd take it in a heart beat.

what's the square footage of our current room? seems like about 15x50? also access to
the common space and kitchenette has been very beneficial. i have always thought of the
next expansion occurring at a different address but we have to weigh everything carefully,
including sunk costs like putting together an access system and setting up physical
infrastructure in the space itself. Is there anyone that thinks signing up for $4,000/mo
space would be an option given our current financial situation? anyways, there are
definitely cheaper options out there but no option is perfect.

I just sent them an email on behalf of sudo room, asking if we could set up a time to tour
the space, meet the landlord, and discuss compatibility.
We're currently paying $2/sqft, so this could be

We might have somebody coming by to showcase a kinect/arduino based project and from my
undestanding it runs on PCs "the faster the better"
Anyone know offhand which of the armada of donated boxes might be most powerful? Planning
to set one up tonight.
Also in general, we should do a survey of which computer parts esp monitors are
functional. Would be nice to have a row of desktops set up in the common area...I think
they have a bar-like configuration at the holdout with a few PCs.

New subject: donated PCs - which ones are fastest?
Yay!!! I've been wanting to suggest this one for awhile. I'll be
note-taking for the NoBAWC meeting earlier that day so will definitely be
around to help set up. If some folks could bring in or donate USB sticks
with Linux distros on them, that would be especially cool. In fact, I may
even use this an an opportunity to seed the Pyre project, which has been on
the backburner for a good year's time, and buy some thumbdrives for the
occasion:
Civilization has crumbled, and everywhere all things are burning.
You have a multi-tool, a tiny laptop, and a 32GB USB stick.

Atom n iris are with their mom on saturdays, but with enuf heads up i can bring them for
a SudoKids session! We will bring the kid books i've been meaning to bring and other
sundry supplies for SudoKids (art supplies, paper, bubble mix, food coloring, cornstarch,
baking soda, vinegar). Lets start up SudoKids at the same time! :) :)

Hi Folks,
Come on out tonight for some good ole fashioned tinkerin' at sudo room. Ongoing
projects include: humidity control and irrigation, semiautomatic beer brewing, RGB LED
alarm clock, stepper motor and servo control for CNC, and hopefully some work on hacking
the roomba into a science rover - if you're interested in any of these I can get you
started somewhere suitable to your skill level right when you arrive. All other projects

Upon reviewing the activities of the previous nights and listening to feedback on
providing more interactivity for newbies who may not yet have a project in mind, I'll
be giving 3 quick tutorials tonight: driving RGB LED strips, voltage regulation AKA how to
not fry your project's brain, and AVR board assembly for making your own controllers
from just one chip and a few passive components. So if you're interested in learning
the basics of how to use microcontrollers I'll have a few simple projects that people
can get started on, and as always there's a wealth of projects documented on the
internet for independent learning. Out "kit bits" collection is increasing
rapidly so we should have plenty of sensors, motors, and other odds and ends for people to
tinker with.
I've also realized I'm going to have to be more proactive about encouraging
collaboration between people on various projects. We have so many people interested in so
many things, and more importantly so motivated to build or hack things in order to improve
their environment, that it seems worthwhile to develop a framework for collaboration on
discrete projects so people can see at a glance what projects are happening first of all,
then get in contact with the people working on them and start collaborating. I have a few
ideas in mind for how to do this, but I really need YOUR input to help develop this idea
into something we will all want to use. What I'm shooting for is a database that can
be browsed visually (will NOT be very elegant at first...probably just a bunch of
thumbnails with lines going between them) that links projects together based on software,
hardware, technical area, dependency (like, my LED sombrero needs a power supply to work -
if someone's already designed the power supply, I can copy their design and focus on
driving the LEDs), and interface specifications (could be as simple as a plug type or a
format for sending serial data) somewhat in the vein of what open source ecology has done.
So to this end, I'd like to have a discussion on this around 8PM where we jot down
the projects we're working on and lay out how they're related, where there is
overlap that can be merged, and identify areas that are critical to moving forward but as
yet undersupported. So if you're generally busy tonight but might have a few minutes
to drop by to give some input, we could use your help for 20 minutes or so outlining such
a system.
Also, I am still wrangling the settings on the controllers list so please let me know if
you have any problems sending message, etc.
