Hey everyone, I've been experimenting in existential
property acquisition and development. And would like to invite you all to
check it out and put on a hard hat and build a shovel to continue iterating
with me on it's development.
If any of you are familiar with Second Life, this is basically an open
source version of that running on an Simulator instance on my server
actually at ChezHack. So for those of you that have been here, or wanted to
be, you can "teleport" here thru the intertubes.

If anyone is already well versed in SL and/or OpenSim please let yourself
be known, as I could use some tips in getting things dialed in. Also if
you're interested in building the ultimate hackerspace in cyberspace, this
could be a good way to start.

on being at the meeting tomorrow to talk further details, including
off-list stuff, so please be there if you're very interested.
We've worked out a time--doors open 8:22, show starts 9:07 sharp. I'll send
out an announcement right now.
ok, i have been away from sudoroom for a full two nights now
i miss sudoroom!
we have org nerds that work really hard to keep the projects running. that
stuff is hard.

after all these years you bastards are finally making me consider
installing linux on my laptop. not even my ex boyfriend could talk me into
it!
i like that there is pushback against too many overly commercial projects
at sudoroom. it creates a safe space. i do not get this safe feeling at
places that are too profit-oriented. it is like eliminating recess at
school and leads to burnout
people actually consider alternatives to current economics models in a
serious way, which I really appreciate even though my views are often

it is a place where people forgive each other
there is a hella ton of homemade vegan food at the meetings! that is so
cool. we make it too.

there did not really go to demonstrations. they did not think that much
about politics or economics.
it was hard to get them to think much about anything. i'm not sure why
this happened but i think it's a structural thing. i'm very lucky to talk
to people at sudoroom who are structurally not mentally destroyed and who
still think and feel passionate

Hey All,
Some Sudoers went over to
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/off/3734928687.html today to check it out.
There are three spaces available. I took some pictures of the 1100 sqft
space that's $1500.
I don't have pictures of the other spaces. I know other people do.
Take a look. The other spaces are larger and have more spaces for shop
like activities and are 4500 sqft for $4000 (no elevator), and a street
facing ground floor retail space at 4000 sqft for $5000.
A big plus is that one of the spaces was being used by the landlord to fix
macs and donate them to non profits and schools. So yeah, good landlord :-)

Dear All,
I just thought you might be interested in a fun upcoming event, the East
Bay Vegan drinks night on Thursday May 18th at Olde Depot in Jack London! I
thought it might be a great cross pollination between Sudo room, East Bay
DIY Bio and the East Bay Veg community (which is also diverse).
At the moment there are 20 people confirmed on Facebook and about 12
maybes, come, join us, hang out whether you're vegan, veg, veg curious or
just want to come and have a beer and hang out :)

people, tomorrow is the last day of april. you know what that means: the

1) online (via wepay): https://sudoroom.org/
2) online (via gittip): https://www.gittip.com/sudoroom/
3) in person (anytime): please drop cash or checks into the clear plastic

4) in person (at meetings): bring cash or checks to wed. meetings.
see you soon,

This place seems way too large for any of us individually, but could make
for a good place for a hackerspace collective, if a couple groups want to
band together.
Not close to BART, but with a good bus connection (including the free Emery

All,
just saw this poking about:
http://www.ccarey.com/resources/propertysearch/DetailPageIndustrialLease.as…
7000 sq ft, Emeryville, ~$7030/month
A bit bigger than we need, but it has tremendous curb appeal in terms of a
space that would attract attention. Not that that's a good thing.
Thoughts?

Hi Sudoers,
I've received some inquiries about when we could do a second batch of sudo shirts. Herein I will lay the groundwork for such shirts to happen.
First of all, today I was struck with a very simple sudo shirt design, which combines a few ideals that I've developed from my time screen printing: Using a colored shirt, minimizing ink use through tactful shirt color choice, creating focus from the graphical elements instead of the text. Also since this design would be a one-screen design, it would be ideal for doing an in-house screen printing workshop using water based inks (another environmentally superior decision), not to mention the possibility of keeping the screen on location for impromptu sudo prints.
This design is not actually the original sudo-button .svg that goes around. I modified this one (attached) to enhance the lines, fix a couple corner-jag issues, and to tweak some of the sides to be more parallel.
I'm pretty sure the edges are not all "perfectly parallel" here, and if we have any illustrator gurus on the list, that might be a cool thing to do. That said, this is a more precise sudo logo than we've had before, let me know if the subtle imperfections were cherished and I can revert this design. (Btw- What's the constellation depicted? Any?)
I and other sudo members have volunteered to donate the labor involved in producing these shirts, which would bring the price down to "cost", which will be $4.55 per shirt (American Apparel runs more expensive, but has some good-labor practices, so unless there's another preferred manufacturer, it seems the morally superior choice for now).
I donated the previous batch of shirts, but I'm currently donating what I can per month in dollars, so I'd like the Sudo Room's help to buy the blank shirts. If resold at $20 each, there would be a 339% profit on each shirt sold, which is probably a good thing to ask, since it doesn't require change, and it's a fundraising shirt anyway.
So: How's support for this design, and at $4.55/shirt, how many would we like Sudo Room to stock up on?
When the time to print comes around, I'll organize the volunteer effort, thanks for all the offers I've received!
-Dan Finlay
Hey everyone! Thank you so much for agreeing to host Bike Smut!! Below are
the details that Bike Smut co-organizer Reverend Phil and I are working on.
Your help and input is much appreciated, so please speak up! With your
help, this event will be that much more spectacular!
1) MONEY/TICKETS
Due in part to the popularity of the show, and to keep the show going, Bike
Smut has historically been a paid-entry event. They would like to offer to
split door sales with Sudo Room 50/50--yay money!! (And just a note on
this: I don't know if this is a no-brainer, but this would not effect your
ability to access Sudo Room. Please be fair though if you do plan to "sneak
in" and donate a little mulah if you are able to.)
2) AUDIO
Does anyone here on the list have access to a good audio system for movie
screenings? This will be an ongoing question as we host Fabulous Friday
Films. I have a carshare and can offer to pick up, babysit and drop off
your sound system.
3) SEATING
Hooray for all our couches, chairs and pews! We will need help with
arrangement and expanding our seating options.
4) LIGHTING
The show includes live performances, and said performances will need good
lighting. Overhead lighting is not flattering, and a few lamps might be all
we need. Let's try setting this up in advance.
5) PROMOTION
It's a strange beast but absolutely critical to the show. This is the last
screening of their current tour, "Turning Trixxx" in The Bay and possibly
ever. Let's make sure people feel luck they got a seat at all! Please make
a call out to your networks far and wide!
Sudo Room promotion: Bike Smut people will be giving us a shout-out. If you
have any other suggestions for promoting our space, please speak up!
6) MERCH/DRINKS/SUNDRIES
We will need to claim one of the common room tables (5 sq feet or more) to
sell underwear, stickers, and such.
Beverages: Let's talk off-list at the next meeting (May 1st) regarding
availability/donations/etc.
Food: Pretzels! Popcorn! If there is something snacky you like making,
consider bringing it for donations/sale!
And finally,
"I'm glad we have got some mustached men on working the door. Ushers who
can make the guests comfortable are very welcome." --Reverend Phil
Hey all,
In the interests of sharing the common space with The Public School
folks and not double-booking events, and in the absence of a web-based
solution, the Public School has posted a physical calendar in the common
room. If an event is expected to be large enough that it needs to
reserve the common room and can not meet in sudoroom proper (I'm
thinking Oakland Nights Live, for instance), please pen in your event
for that day as well as the time it's starting/ending, so that other
groups that use the common space know that the space is reserved.
If your event is only going to take up half the common room, but is
still too large for sudoroom, please write it in anyway and make a note
(e.g. "1/2 common room needed") and then if the Public School has a
similar situation we can work it out on a case-by-case basis. I predict
this to be an edge-case though.
Sudodarity forever!

It looks like we'll be having our next NymRights meetup this Thursday,
7pm at sudo room*, near the 19th st BART stop. I'm also going to try
to arrange for some kind of call-in conference phone number so that
people who are not in Oakland can join and contribute as well.
Main topics for the meeting:
* What is this IDESG thing coming up?
* Discussion on our existing "nym" use cases
* Positive ways to educate people on nyms
We'll also make something resembling meeting notes and post it on
NymRights.org for people who cannot make it but are interested in
participating.

A friend of mine who sews semi-professionally mentioned that an
exceptionally beefy sewing machine is available at the estate sale place by
Jack London / 4th near Broadway (this one:
http://www.somethingtosellabout.com/home.html) for $175 as of a few days
ago.
She'd split the cost with a few of us if we could put it in sudo room and
make it available. I'd also split the cost with 3-4+ people.
I won't be able to go down to see if it's still there, gather more detailed
info, and plan transportation to sudo room if appropriate until Saturday at
the earliest.
With or without me, and asap, would anyone like to get involved as a
co-investor, detective, or sewing machine transport specialist?

one thing i learned from sitting in the biohacking group was that
(biohacking) patrick established a rule that they would have a "working"
meeting, not a socializing meeting, with more emphasis on managing time
wisely and getting things done.
i thought that was a cool approach.
i personally like talking a lot at meetings, socializing but i realize my
extroverted style isn't respectful of other styles
perhaps we could experiment, do some "working" get things done quickly
meetings with a minimum on longer speeches?
we had some people who took the opportunity to make a few things out of
clay during our meeting!
[image: Inline image 1][image: Inline image 2]
i think they liked it :)
Hi All,
There has been a lot of talking about working and general meetings and how
we can have fun and get down to business (have our cake and eat it too) at
the Sudo Meetings. I would like to propose that we tackle this by simply
splitting the meeting up in to two time blocks with different purposes.
I wont be able to make it to the next few meetings, which is why I
haven't proposed this sooner. But if anyone who is facilitating thinks this
is a good idea and wants to follow it go ahead!
Here's the proposal:
6:00 - 7:30 : Community Potluck + General Meeting (Introductions, Updates,
and Announcements)
7:30 - 9:00 : Working Meeting (Proposals, Conflict Resolutions,
Overflow Discussions)

I was thinking that it might be useful to have some of the Sudo Room projects have their own office. So all the documents, mailing list archives, and sections of the wiki relevant to that group can be made easily accessible. It could also be used to join in people remotely for the weekly meetings. Each room could have information that could be made available at different layers of permission according to role - so someone can come into a meeting that is a public meeting, but can't mess around with the etherpad or other trolling behavior.

We have those four giant light-box-storage things cluttering up the
space. A few days ago I started preparing to hang them from the rear
wall. I got sort of derailed by drama and uncertainty, but I'm making
up my mind to continue acting like this space IS sudoroom until
further notice. That said, I need a few strong people to help me
finish the job. Anybody up for it? How about tomorrow night
before/during/after Hacky Happer Hour? Mostly you will need to hold
each one in place while I get the first screw in, and possibly also
the second.
i resurrect the proposal for a day hacking in a museum. it could be node,
it could be python...
i'm inspired because i saw a lot of node people doing hacking in the museum
in sf. i'd like for us to do it too!
==> problem - museums do cost money. I have a membership and can get people
in +1 ... maybe we can go on a free day... but those are crowded?
==> benefits - there's so muchs tuff like the history section of the
oakland museum. i could see how this dovetails nicely into the oakland wiki
group... how could you NOT be influenced by all the cool stuff going on
there?
==> potential solution to money issues - we could buy group tickets or talk
to the museum to get a special deal for our starving collective???

I like meetings but I realized that if many people do not like meetings,
then it is partly our fault. yes ,meetings have to get done, but time is
precious.
i would like to help out with making meetings and cleaning less boring. ray
+ max have helped out a lot with bringing food, spicing things up!
for cleaning of natural decay--i propose we theme these as well.
we are theming our hacker happy hour for costume. i am hosting and will
wear a personally humiliating cosplay fanime outfit... so why not do this
for natural decay? anyone up for a french maid costume natural decay hour?

I'm starting a thread for Jordan's reprap project to make her own 3D printer
Jordan is humble but she's one of the smartest and hardest working people at sudoroom
She does stuff . It's amazing
I want to cheer Jordan on with her rep rap project! I am excited about her 3D printing open source project

Hello all! I'm emailing in response to all of your responses!
I think Aestetix made a really crucial point about Bike Smut seeking to
provide an alternative to exploitative pornography. Bike Smut is an
activist group that promotes sexual empowerment. Something that Aestetix
touched on, and that I really value, is that they approach their passions
through a show(ing) that is an act of radical free speech.
What is "child-friendly" is of course relative, so speak up anyone who has
an opinion on this. One important thing about proposing the event was that
we wanted to do it at a time generally associated with adult nightlife,
that being Friday Night.
I agree with //Matt et. al. that it should be obvious to anyone upon
entering 2141 that this event would be happening. Aesthetically-intriguing
and information-sufficient signage is an absolute must, and will be taken
care of. What would be the logistics of a curtain? I am intrigued..
I support all bouncers, mustachioed and otherwise.
Have I answered all questions? Are there more concerns?
Hey Sudo Room. Some good news out of our brother hackspace AMT

Hi all,
I recently started working the communications front for a super rad startup
called Open Garden. Essentially, OG is a mobile broadband network that uses
p2p mesh technology to provide internet connectivity between smartphones,
laptops and tablets.
Last night I hopped on a call with some folks in India who run a nonprofit
to help rural farmers tackle problems like soil testing, crop planning,
seed recommendation, etc; They're planning to install Open Garden on their
Android tablets and phones, pooling local networks of 2G and occasionally
3G mobile data to provide internet connectivity to the tablets.
It's a great team doing exciting work. Hit me up if you'd like to hear
more, or check out the link below. And btw, if you're looking for work and
want to hear about more opportunities, join the sudo-jobs mailing list
here: http://lists.sudoroom.org/listinfo/sudo-jobs

Hello Sudoers!
The Skinny:
-7pm Dinner tonight
-8:30pm Crock Pot Demo & Gravy Impromptu Fundraiser (Nice pint of Red Gravy
for $5-$10 sliding scale. All proceeds go to Sudo Room for May Rent)
-Mate sampling
The Verbose:
Matt has bought some raw ingredients and stashed them through the nooks and
dark places of sudo room. I have been tasked to find and then cook the
said ingredients. It's kind of like an episode of Iron Chef (Japanese
Version) and Easter all rolled up in one.
I've also been asked to demo the crock pot so I thought I would make a Sudo
sized amount of Red Gravy, and since we're at it why not bottle them in new
pints and sell them as a Sudo Gravy Fundraiser ($5-$10 sliding scale) and
help out May Rent.
Oh and I'm making another test recipe of mate for everyone to sample in the
quixotic quest of Sudo Mate - the intersection of Mate, Effervescence
Caffeine, & Oakland Esprit.
We'll see how close we get. It's already 4pm. :)

Wow, this is a lively thread. :)
Due diligence? Yes!
The search for new space? Yes! (Jenny, sign me up for Thurs if a scouting party is assembling)
A search for a new space helps empower us with choice. It might help George consider his words and approach more carefully, knowing that we are considering leaving (or he might just be an unapologetic rager in which case no amount of discussion or amendments to the rental agreement would help).
I'm also hoping landlords talk (maybe not to George, tho ;) and I plan on mentioning our current address and landlord to any prospective landlord with the intention of the news getting back to George. In this way George may apply whatever modicum of self-control and civility to his interactions with us, his valued tenants.
I'm going to ask George, if he would be willing to sign a letter of recommendation endorsing us as tenants that pay rent on time. ;)

These are all really valuable points.
However, I think it is important to explore opportunities when they arise, and would like to suggest some folks check the space out ASAP and give the rest of us a report-back.
The first available slot is tomorrow between 3-4pm. I will unfortunately be working at that time, but whoever is available and interested please email me tonight/tomorrow morning and I will send along the cell # to call.
They are also available to show the space Sunday between 10-11am, and Monday-Friday afternoons and some evenings. I am down for a Thursday afternoon tour, and if I don't get any replies back for tomorrow, I'll try to schedule a Thursday tour between 3-4pm.
Re: issues with the landlord: Matt, Jordan, Andrew and myself (as far as I'm aware, but I'm sure there are others) have buffered the community from most of George's incorrigible behavior (I've been yelled at for things sudoers have not even been around to do more times than I can count) - though, granted, we have also put him through what I'm sure is unexpected turbulence - but it should also be noted for the record that his rapport with the EAST BAY *MEDITATION* CENTER was horrible enough to warrant them moving out on bad terms.
Andrew's suggestion re: a revision of the contract is a good one, but I have the feeling it wouldn't do much to change deeply-embedded behavior patterns. We are growing too large for the space, regardless, and I also think it could be a great opportunity for a serious crowdfunding campaign.
In love and solidarity,
Jenny

I completely understand why members in this thread want to move into a new space, both for the comments from the landlord and for other reasons as well (moar space!), but I'd definitely like to advocate that we proceed with due diligence. Matt mentioned trying to start a process where we continually understand the real estate market and what our options are... With that in mind, maybe we can figure out a process where:
- we try to evaluate as many different spaces as possible, based on criteria determined by consensus, and in those criteria...
- determine what's financially feasible, at what time period, with what funding, etc. Rusty recently sent out that survey recently about funding, and the few responses I read weren't at significantly higher price points, though our questions centered around reserves.
I suppose that I see the comments from the landlord as a potential additional reason to re-evaluate the space, but not one minimally sufficient to immediately relocate.
As Bill mentioned, it'd be great to form some kind of exploratory committee with the Public Schools. There's a lot of available commercial space out there, and it'd be great to try and evaluate as much as we can.
If anything, this thread demonstrates that we have a lot of leverage in the management of the space. We could probably leave pretty easily, and it's likely that group consensus would be okay with that. At the very, very least, we need to ask that he respectfully talk to our members. Or, for that matter, guests of our members. You know, people. As for his conservative ideas about gender, a conversation with him when he's not in rant-mode really might help.

Regarding our budget, I think that members in the past were expected to pay more, and if asked, many would be willing to pay more if it were for a good investment. Having a better deal on more space does seem to make sense to me, if we can be sure it meets all our needs.

There have been other issues. I am wary of listing them out, but like I said they all surround having no clear boundaries and expectations and his communication style of just saying whats on his mind, maybe throwing in a threat, and then leaving.
I think though in general we have been thinking about looking for a new (bigger) space for awhile. No time like the present to start shopping around. If we find something that fits in the budget and is close to bart why not?

So, a move is a pretty big step. Have there been any other issues with
the landlord? I do agree that gender sensitivity is important, and yet
if there aren't any other complaints, I wonder if it's something we
could work out with him.

Sudo room is a room with a bunch of computer hardware in it much of it idle
and a community of people many of them not idle many of whom like free
access to information and privacy-respecting technology and social
institutions and dislike pervasive surveillance by state and corporate
actors and oligopolistic private control of vital public resources.
YaCy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YaCy> is a
free<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software>
distributed search
engine<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_search_engine>,
built on principles of
peer-to-peer<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer> (P2P)
networks. All YaCy-peers are equal and no central
server<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_(computing)>
exists. It can be run either in a
crawling<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler>
mode or as a local proxy server<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server>,
indexing web pages visited by the person running YaCy on his or her
computer. (Several mechanisms are provided to protect the user's privacy.)
Access to the search functions is
given
by a locally running web server which provides a search box to enter
search terms, and returns search results in a similar format to other
popular search engines.
