My thoughts:
The various spaces are huge and awesome. The workshop space will be
subdivided up so there's the possibility of building a fun 2-level
structure / castle / tactile dome for ourselves if we end up deciding to
move there.
Sounds like there will be a variety of interesting things happening in the
building: art shows, performances, music, various groups meeting,
skillshares, yoga and dance classes, etc.
The project seems just about ready to start absorbing more people. They
have 6 "core" people and are looking for more residents and collaborators.
They expect 10-12 people to live there for $800/mo. It's right by the
freeway and has no outdoor space.
We weren't able to photograph the upstairs area which is a funky maze of
spaces which are / will become bedrooms that overlook the larger public
spaces. Also there's a hot tub.
They said they were going to prioritize the residents' feeling of "home"
over having loud shows every night. I expect that to be a point of
contention -- that huge empty space is crying out to be used for things.
If Sudo Room moved there we'd have to figure out our special access needs
(24 hour access, etc) and how that coexists with the other people and
events using the space and their security needs. Maybe there's a side door
we could use.
Also there's roof access so Sudo Mesh can probably place a node up there
regardless of what else happens. I bet the Omni people will support that.
I haven't tried the 10 minute walk northward from MacArthur BART so I'm not
sure if it's too far or not. The location is a block behind East Bay Depot
for Creative Reuse near where Shattuck hits Telegraph.

You do realize that's very close to Ace Monster Toys? If Sudo room moves up to the
Berkeley Border, it would make sense to join with Ace Monster Toys. Also, in my opinion
that is way too far from Bart, and way too far from where I live, so I would probably not
ever go there.
Sounds like an interesting space though, and that is a better neighborhood than where AMT
is now. Maybe they would be interested in this space?

It's in Temescal, a 30 minute walk from AMT. The Berkeley border is
farther north up between Ashby and Alcatraz.
Has anyone ever done a geographic survey of where Sudoers live and how much
time they're willing to spend on BART getting to Sudo? I'm in Berkeley but
it seems like most people are closer to downtown Oakland.

I've given notice to George & Laurie that we are terminating the current lease at
the end of December. George said he was interested in putting up the Sudo Room section of
the building for co-op sale.
Also, the decision to move would be done by consensus. Given the response to the
suggestion we've had in the several past attempts, seems nearly impossible to get
agreement on this.
Seems like a great space for the Adeline house crew, who seem most excited about the Omni.
Maybe this energy and enthusiasm would be best presented as an expansion to a satellite
space and deepening connections with other like-minded groups.

Sounds like there will be a variety of interesting things happening in the
building: art shows, performances, music, various groups meeting,
skillshares, yoga and dance classes, etc.
The project seems just about ready to start absorbing more people. They
have 6 "core" people and are looking for more residents and collaborators.
They expect 10-12 people to live there for $800/mo. It's right by the
freeway and has no outdoor space.
We weren't able to photograph the upstairs area which is a funky maze of
spaces which are / will become bedrooms that overlook the larger public
spaces. Also there's a hot tub.
They said they were going to prioritize the residents' feeling of "home"
over having loud shows every night. I expect that to be a point of
contention -- that huge empty space is crying out to be used for things.
If Sudo Room moved there we'd have to figure out our special access needs
(24 hour access, etc) and how that coexists with the other people and
events using the space and their security needs. Maybe there's a side door
we could use.
Also there's roof access so Sudo Mesh can probably place a node up there
regardless of what else happens. I bet the Omni people will support that.
I haven't tried the 10 minute walk northward from MacArthur BART so I'm
not sure if it's too far or not. The location is a block behind East Bay
Depot for Creative Reuse near where Shattuck hits Telegraph.

I don't think so. Sudo Room's current lease will be terminated at the start of
2014.
Given the three month lead time to prepare, I think an initiative to bring the various
groups interested in that wing of 2141 Broadway to coordinate divvying up the different
spaces in that wing is a very realistic option. And as co-op owners, not as renters. With
rules and policies determined by the collective group.

sudo, Lets all chill, I'm sure nothing undoable has been committed.."
If Eddan is immanently concerned about his personal liability with regards
the lease, which is totally understandable, then yea his name on the
lease should ideally be replaced by someone more comfortable with that and
the potential risk it entails.. It seems to me that could/should happen
ASAP? As doing so might help ease some of the tension in the
present conversation, too.
BAPS' lease is i think still let to Zach Houston, which we also need to
change stat, so maybe if nothing else both Sudo & Baps could meet with
Laurie & George to change these particulars --

i totally agree that we should keep cool.
which is why i suggested, with enough lead time to make something real
happen, that we re-visit the lease.
i was not concerned about liability until several specific comments
made by Marc that made me worry about some plan he seemed to be
hatching up.
also, though i understand that it most likely comes from Marc's
strange attachment to demonstrating he's in charge at Sudo Room, when
it is supposed to be a collective cooperative, i do feel the need to
explain myself given the gross mischaracterization Marc seems capable
of.
the reason i was not as present this past summer as i'd hoped to be
was because i was taking the CA bar so we can actually deal with the
pending legal issues Sudo Room.

I think we've been fortunate to have people (Eddan, Matt, Zach) put their name down in
the lease and assume a degree of liability for operations. I interpret the notice to
George as a move that is not binding on sudo room in any way, but one that A) allows Eddan
and presumably Matt to relinquish their "doing business as" status to a better
defined group, B) informs George that his behavior toward tenants will not be met with
guaranteed continued tenancy, and C) puts a fire under all of our asses to solve the
space/access/community issues elegantly, either by finding a new space or by coming to an
agreement and a way forward at 2141. These are just my thoughts, with a grain of salt on
specifics as I haven't been going to general meetings recently but I guess it's
time to start doing that again since this is a matter of great importance.

If Eddan is immanently concerned about his personal
liability with regards the lease, which is totally understandable, then yea his name on
the lease should ideally be replaced by someone more comfortable with that and the
potential risk it entails.. It seems to me that could/should happen ASAP? As doing
so might help ease some of the tension in the present conversation, too.
BAPS' lease is i think still let to Zach Houston,
which we also need to change stat, so maybe if nothing else both Sudo & Baps could
meet with Laurie & George to change these particulars --

I was hoping someone could fill me in on what is really meant by deciding
we are officially 'terminating the lease' in Dec. ?
Does it mean we are definitely out of 2141 come Jan., ie, we definitely
dont want to stay at 2141? Has that been decided?
Or, would we have the opportunity to negotiate a new/better lease if we did
decide to keep on at 2141?
Re: a co-op purchase of part of 2141, what are the brass tacks of that
exactly? I..e, do we have however many tens of thousands I imagine we would
need for most mortgage downpayments? Is there some angel investor here I
dunno about?

the church, or part of the Omni? Or are we just talking about renting part
of the omni?
Personally, I'd prefer to move, but move with BAPS, SUDO, and CCL. It kind
of seems like maybe we should find a good place to move to, and understand
what our combined budget is. if SUDO moves out without BAPS that would suck
for BAPS and also mean that SUDO would probably get a smaller space than we
would get if we combined forces, synchronized, and all moved somewhere
together (or mayber stayed at 2141 together, under more amenable
conditions). Staying together being the operative word to me here..

to be hammered out in detail, it was my understanding from George that
he was interested in an arrangement that would include selling off
equity in that portion. Different organizations would put up money in
their collective shares and that wing would be organized as a co-op
with the different organizational/individual owners taking part in the
decision-making of managing the building.

Im sad i missed the joint meeting with CCL re: moving in - we definitely
need more meatspace strategizing on making a 3-way move like that happen -
I'm really happy that marina and y'all are checking out the Omni and other
potential spaces - I'm going to start looking pretty hard and get BAPSers
in on this too - sounds like a guesstimated combo
sudo/baps/ccl monthly budget would be ~$4500, does that seem about right?
Re: SUDO moving into the Omni, it sounds super cool and personally I have
no problem with the location - but I do think if there are ppl living in
the space, that might make it challenging - conversely if there are lots of
loud shows there, that might make having a class tough? And more or
less importantly.. are there windows in the Omni space? It's be great if
whatever space SUDO moved to had more natural light..

hi all,
it's easy to see info flying around about different options for spaces
being presented and feel like things are moving rapidly toward a particular
option. please do not feel this way!
for example, with the omni, i am personally completely agnostic towards the
space (agnostic leaning towards against..although it's a wonderful
building, a 10 min walk from bart might be unacceptable for sudo room's
needs). we wrote a long email to ensure that everyone got lots of details
on the space so that we could all make a good decision about whether this
particular space might suit our needs.
one thing that might help would be for future reportbacks on potential
spaces to include in the subject something like "[potential space] XYZ Rad
Abandoned Warehouse Out on the Edge of Town!", just so we're all clear. i
plan to do this myself!

My apologies if my message was not clear. Apparently, from the off-
line questions I've gotten - it came off that I was saying that Sudo
Room was leaving 2141 at the end of December. That is not necessarily
what I was saying. We are currently on a month-to-month lease and
could decide within a months notice (or less if we offer a replacement
tenant) to move anyhow. Out of courtesy, I was telling George 3
months in advance that there have been enough discussions on the list
and active efforts at looking at other places that it would only make
sense to re-visit the terms of the lease and re-negotiate another one
for the beginning of Jan. 2014.
Both Matt and I are currently listed as individuals on the lease as
well as Sudo Room. A new lease, under whatever permutation it happens
to be, would have Sudo Room only as the lessee.
Or better yet, as far as I'm concerned - a joint entity that joins the
forces of BAPS, SUDO, CCL, etc, etc. - as co-operative leaders in a
new venture.

Along the same lines what are our real-world options with respect
buying the church, or part of the Omni? Or are we just talking about
renting part of the omni?
Personally, I'd prefer to move, but move with BAPS, SUDO, and CCL.
It kind of seems like maybe we should find a good place to move to,
and understand what our combined budget is. if SUDO moves out
without BAPS that would suck for BAPS and also mean that SUDO would
probably get a smaller space than we would get if we combined
forces, synchronized, and all moved somewhere together (or mayber
stayed at 2141 together, under more amenable conditions). Staying
together being the operative word to me here..

Sounds like an interesting space though, and that is a better
neighborhood than where AMT is now. Maybe they would be interested
in this space?

It's 1.4 mi away, which is relatively close, though not a super
convenient walking distance. However they are looking for bigger
cheaper spaces (minimum 3000 sq ft, and at most $1/sqft), so I'm not
sure this would work. Also they have a requirement that anything
over 2500sqft MUST have overhead sprinklers. That combined with the
noise constraints might be an issue, since AMT has lots of big noisy
toys (large CNC router tables, laser cutters, power saws, etc)

New subject: moving logistics / diaspora / phoenix ops
So with a deadline for moving already in place I think we ought to work out mechanics of
clearing out equipment, supplies, and junk from the space. We have alot of nominally
useful stuff - too much it would seem. Also important is our vision for what kind of
space we want - and whether or not to have a single space or multiple spaces with
different flavors as has been suggested long in the past for a separate "heavy
making" space. In the meantime we may want to either finish up projects that are
taking up space at 2141, or stage them somewhere else if they won't come to fruition
in 2013. Also for computer parts - I am not very good with the OS configuration but I can
help go through parts we have and with some help from one or more of our gurus build
functional computers. We can have ongoing listings on craigslist to sell off surplus
equipment with proceeds going toward moving / upgrading. Thoughts? Volunteers?

Certainly been a while since I chimed in. I just wanted to mention I could
come in and help with a sorting pass a couple weekends. If we got enough
people involved it could probably go pretty quickly. I'll also be happy to
move out any of my stuff in the meantime if that will help clear up space
for a move to a new space.
